It's on an equal level of ignorance as believing that racism can only be a one-way thing. A perfect example is the continuous race war between lower-class black people and the upper-class whites in the US, and even the global superpowers against the middle-eastern countries for the past decades. The problem is that any single racially motivated hate crime will trigger a wildfire of racism when words get out, and people are always quick to judge because of the stereotypes that has been painted up from years of biased propaganda. It is the reason why mainstream media can't be trusted fully, and that a lot of fact-based analyses are being shot down if it doesn't match the narrative or warped world-view of those who buy everything that makes it to the news headlines. As long as the popular news sources are controlled by political agendas, hate will thrive.

I agree that according to scripture/published religious works don't usually advocate disowning your child for thinking differently, but unfortunately, that isn't necessarily what some Christians actually believe is right. My grandmother's husband, let's call him Jr. (even though he was technically our step grandfather, all the grandchildren adored him and he was immediately just considered beloved family) once asked me why my younger sister never had boyfriends). I told him I didn't know, maybe she watched the mistakes my sister and I made with boyfriends and decided to wait to date until she was an adult. Jr. was a Baptist minister before he retired. We all went to his sermons on Sundays we spent with our grandmother. He then told me to tell my younger sister if she was worried about people judging her for who she wanted to date, for me to tell her if that person was good enough for her to love, then he would love them as well, no matter who they are.". He didn't want to come right out and accuse her of being gay. I hugged him and let him know I would pass this message on to her when it became relevant. My sister is gay, but Jr. died before he could meet the wonderful, smart, kind woman my sister would marry. My sister was concerned about what our family would think of her getting married to a woman, so I passed the message along. We all cried and hugged, then toasted Jr. a bottle of wine, while telling funny stories about him. This is the family I wished everyone had, because everyone deserves it.

THIS. My parents told me I was too young to know what bisexuality was and that bisexuality doesn’t exist and that I was straight and I believed it for 3 years. I’m 17 and this happened at 13-14. I tried dating guys and then kept catching feelings for girls (like close friends and random girls in school) instead and that’s how I figured out I was a lesbian. I feel like it was so obvious when I was a kid: I made my girl dolls kiss all the time (I had boy dolls too!!), was always ridiculously afraid of guys, always flirted with girls and always had crushes on girls on tv. But no I apparently can’t possibly be one because I’m not butch and because I’m super girly. Apparently that = straight? Fuck nah. I always kinda knew.

I have seven years of experience in operations and management, four years of experience in estimations and workshops, college, and I'm over 30. Yet I'm too young to know how to replace a broken step in the family house for my mother, despite having a full workshop. Instead my siblings expect me to hire a carpenter for $150 an hour... Trust me, if you're the youngest, they will *never* stop seeing you as the little kid.

Too damn true. Decided when I was pretty young I didn't want any kids (can't remember my reasoning), and everyone was quick to spout you-know-what. Adult (young, mind you) now, and though I'm no longer 100% on that, spending time with my sisters' kids makes me reluctant to have my own still, and probably only one if I do change my mind. Yet I still get told I'm "too young to decide" if I ever say that. Also semi-closeted ace and perfectly willing to die a virgin, so little to no chance of a slip-up. Positive I'd get pestered if I told my family about that, too.

When it comes to jehovah witnesses they really have an us vs them kind of mindset with outsiders and take shunning those they disfellowshiped quite seriously. Since those in the religion can’t really make relationships with those who aren’t part of it when they’re disfellowship and shunned they would have absolutely no one to turned to since all they know is the people in the religion. Divorce is also seen as negative even when being abused by your partner. But most likely the dad might have been or will be shunned which what it looks like not a bad thing cause god damn the other side of the family is crazy

Cult, the word you are looking for is cult.
@solarsystemresident4 жыл бұрын
I used to be a Jehovah's witness. Actually, they don't "kick out of the church" if someone of the congregation dates someone who's not a witness. The worst that can happen to you in that case is you lose the privileges you have in the congregation, but you are not rejected at all. There are even witnesses who are married to people who are not witnesses and they're doing fine (yet, what a pleasure to see there are sneaky young witnesses everywhere). if your ex was being threatened to be kicked out, the reason is that his parents were too severe or the people of his congregation didn't follow the rules that were given to them. Either way, I still understand that he was scared, we would've lost his parents approval and been considered a toxic company by the people of the congregation (which might have included his friends and family) and by consequences, even if he wouldn't have been kicked out, he most certainly would've been left behind. Still, I'm very sorry that happened to you, and I hope you're doing good now. You didn't deserve to go through this no matter what. If he knew in the first place that he wouldn't have been brave enough to tell his parents or anyone else about you, he wouldn't have let himself approached you and that thing would've never happened to you. Edit: typo

The JJ one is sad, apart from the awesome wedding. My brother knows someone whose mother used to be supportive of him and his partner, but his brother was in a very bad accident which resulted in a permanently disabling injury and the mother, and brother, became very religious and very unsupportive of him. I'm not sure how (or why), but he's managed to maintain a strained relationship with them for the past 20 years (he's honestly a saint). But worse yet, they've become anti-vaccine and say they won't be getting the Covid-19 vaccine even though they both really should because of her age and the brother's health. A cousin of mine (not first cousins, the connection is a bit more distant) was married to a secular Indonesian Muslim. He was really nice and when my cousin brought him to meet my grandma she really liked him. But back in Indonesia, there was a horrible car accident and the majority of the women in his family died :( He then became very, very religious and I don't know the details, but yeah, that ended the marriage. It's really sad, they seemed like a happy couple and my grandmother never threw away the picture she took of him. Only lucky thing is they didn't have children together yet. But yay religion, offering comfort in tragedy and...ruining relationships since time immemorial?
