We've had a 58KWh ID.3 since Feb 2023 and we love it. The software isn't amazing but it's functional, and coming from a 2011 Skoda Yeti with a radio for an infotainment screen, it's a spaceship. I love the routing via chargers - I feel this isn't given enough credit in reviews.

The updated ID.3 with the big battery is now also a 5 seater. Probably the only car I would replace our standard ID.3 with. There are low level air vents for the rear seats under the front seats. Does keep air flowing.
@bq5577x4 ай бұрын
Works perfectly fine, I have the same in my VW Polo and the W169 Mercedes from my mother always had that. Even on long roadtrips (I did that multiple times with the W169 A-class) its fine, since you get airflow from the front (a bit) and extra from the bottom, so the rear is usually colder than the front. In the front u usually have more sun hitting your body, so it will get warmer after all!
@bq5577x4 ай бұрын
And indeed, I was thinking about getting a 2019 Model 3 Long Range, but I currently have a VW Polo, prices of used ID.3 in Germany and Netherlands are good for ID.3, so I think I would get an ID.3 Pro S! Since the big battery makes it very suitable for long trips. Tesla Model 3 is faster in charging but the differences are small on long trips. I preferably don't drive more than 800km a day (even with a fossil powered car). On a trip of 800km it's maybe 20 minutes difference. That's insignificant, having one or more extra stops to go to the restroom would eat up as much time!

I drive a 2024 ID.4 (the newest facelift version) and really love it. Not everything's perfect of course but the efficiency of the new motor is actually not that bad. Also the charging-curve was improved, so now it charges faster from 10%-80% even though the DC-peak is the same. The most notable improvement to the older ID.4 really is the software: Manual Battery preconditioning is so practical and the software just looks and feels better in general. I hate the all-in-one blinker-washer-stalk though... and the light control panel in all newer VW-Cars, I always turn the windshield heater on, on accident.

I have an ID.3 58kwh for about a year now. I instantly liked it since the first time I test drove it and it still gives me lot of happy driving miles. I'm on the lookout for another EV with more range and the ID.3 will stay because my wife loves to drive it too. Out of curiosity I went to drive the new Tesla 3, the RWD and the dual motor back to back. I found the the RWD to be the better drive, although the power of the AWD was very enjoyable but eventually not really needed. Long story short, I was very happy to be back in my ID.3...it's so much easier to drive, more nimble, more practical, more balanced, less jerky in traffic, better cruise control and thank goodness no one pedal drive. Don't get me wrong, I rarely need to use the brake pedal in the ID.3, but it's just way easier to regulate your speed or hypermile in the VW than the Tesla. The VW ID cars are just much better thought through, practical and enjoyable. I actually like the haptic buttons on the steering wheel, use them as sliders instead of buttons and you'll see that they work super easy and silently. The tesla 3 is good value car for it's money, well equiped I'll give it that, but it left me more frustrated and annoyed in the many little details where it's faulty. The removal of the stalks - completely unnecessary. Who on earth was complaining about stalks? You want to change something quickly? Go in one of the 20 submenu's on the center screen and start swiping like an idiot. You like the stereo loud, good, we'll also unwantedly increased the blinker sound for you to scare the hell out of you. You safely want to select another song on spotify while waiting for a left turn on a traffic light, let me put the camera view in front of it. You managed to swipe it to the side, no worries next time we'll put it right back in front of everything...I like clean, scandivian design, but this "less is more" is mostly more frustrating". Brought the tesla back to the dealer an hour earlier than booked, thanked the man for reassuring myself that I'm making the right choice to buy an VW ID.7 tourer instead. Great car, no frustrations.

As a 58kWh ID3 owner who has a relative with a Tesla M3 LR, I think you're being a little generous to the ID3. It's absolutely a fine car, it handles quite well, it stops and goes quite well. But I cannot trust the ADAS really to do its job [and yes, my software is upto date], and proper one pedal driving doesn't exist in it. And then the Infotainment software is just nowhere near the Tesla for ease of usability and utility. Voice Commands are still a joke. And the auto-wipers have their own little VW issues. So, as I said, it's a fne car but actually it just doesn't feel that special, apart from being a BEV and is superior to an ICE car, whereas a Tesla always does. I guess it's that quintessential thing - Character. The ID3 lacks some, while the Tesla has bags of it. Put it this way. Occasionally we swap cars on runs. The relative always wants his Tesla back, whereas I'm reluctant to give it back. Sums our experiences up.

I love it. I’m a real VW fan having owned 7 including 4 golfs and an air cooled Type 3 fastback. Having said that they hurt their reputation with the ID3 execution initially and I can’t see myself buying one for a few years…we have a model Y and a dog and the Y is a brilliant size and dog mode is unbeatable. They missed a trick with the naming convention. Everyone now has numbers. Wish they had just kept the Golf name for this car. When you compare the Golf’s I owned ( Marks 1,3 4, 7) they had a resemblance but are massively different, and with a little effort they could have kept more of a resemblance. One thing that always puts me off VW Group these days is the massive number of options and packs. The Tesla Model Y options are simple (none). But there are so many spec levels and then packs that it’s difficult to work out what you need and 2nd hand buying and selling is very difficult. Efficiency is useless. Our model does more then 4 miles / kWh over its whole life (12,000 miles). Overall though VW Group had taken BEV seriously thanks to Herbert Diess and it shows. Now if Diess were to become the Tesla COO how good would that be!

By coincidence, yesterday I had a ride in a Model 3 being used by a ride-share service. I do not know what specific version of the Model 3 it might have been. ( It looked new but maybe the driver just keeps it clean.) Anyway, I was distinctly uncomfortable in the rear seat. The seat is low, so my knees stuck up in the air. There was not enough room under the front seat for me to get my toes under it, which added to the awkward seating position. The ride was distinctly harsh as well. I had ridden in Model 3s two or three times when they first came out several years ago, but this was my first ride in one for several years. Riding as a rear seat passenger was a vivid reminder of how far Tesla has to go to achieve good rear seat passenger comfort. Now full disclosure, I do not know what the tires or wheel size were, so maybe it was a performance model or had larger wheels, do not know. And I am not anti-Tesla -- I owned a Model S for 8 years and enjoyed it. On the positive side, I did like the view of the center screen -- my current EV has much smaller screens, and I miss tesla's big screen, especially for using maps.

Biggest problem with the ID3 is it can't officially carry roof bars and it has zero towing capability, so essentially it's an electric shopping trolley so if a person needs to carry a family and luggage, it has no ability to carry additional luggage. Hopefully, when the ID3 replacement comes out, whenever, these omissions will be instated. VW were a little too cautious when they brought out this car. Obviously their first purpose designed EV and they were worried about range and loss of range especially when towing or with a roofbox on top.

It has all the good points here but has vents in the back and triple zone climate control, no haptic buttons, excellent HUD and much better materials in the interior. I'm interested to see so many happy owners here. I hired one for a month, about three years ago. It was one of many EVs I tried at the time when trying to choose one. I thought a month should be long enough to learn to deal with any idiosyncrasies. I liked the size, ride and appearance. The interior was OK, but rather sparse and cheap for an expensive car (this was after the early 2021 10% price cut). I had no problems with software reliability, but I found the user interface design awful. We rarely had a journey without either my wife or me screaming abuse at the system - usually the touch screen. For example, the only way to zoom the touch screen satnav display is to use a two finger pinch action. Remember you are doing this on a probably bumpy road whilst trying not to take your eyes off the road. Almost every time the system would interpret it as a tap and set a new destination. So now you no longer have any guidance to your destination - good luck guessing which motorway exit to take, or where to go in the city centre. The haptic buttons on the steering wheel were equally dire. I recall that activating and setting the speed limiter required me to look down from the road about six times. Such a shame, a really nice car ruined (for me) by awful software design and related interface hardware choices.

VW should at least sell the car with a heat pump, granny cable and CCS cable as standard. Like Tesla does. VW are too expensive and living on past glories.

VW id3 is basically like the VW Cupra Born. The Official website has a technical drop down page which sets out charging performance. For DC it should charge 5-80% in 35 minutes. Actually it took 50-55mins. Worse still it never even peaked at the rate it would need to average to achieve 35mins. The specification is not caveated. A courtesy Cupra did the same. I have detailed charge info but neither VW or retailer Listers have challenged the accuracy of the information. VW Cupra website doesn’t say that the battery safe mode will impact on AC charging performance. Rather it advertises cheap overnight charging and recommends Ohme and Octopus: I purchased both. If the AC charging depends on the battery safe mode then it should state that. It doesn’t. Indeed there is no explanation of battery safe mode and why/when and on what criteria it will be activated. So 75/80% of time it half charged overnight which means I could not get to work and back! The battery safe mode is on a VW id3 website!!!

The id3 would have been a much more successful car had it been sorted from day one; we had an early one with lots of glitches but overall much preferred it to the MG4 we replaced it with. I still think they look good in the classic VW understated way - looking at you, BMW…

They always have, but you need to lift your foot off when the car tells you to otherwise you won't slow down in time. The car works it out for you when on adaptive regen.

Nice looking car except for the small windows in the front. It makes no sense that VW is still using the old inefficient engine in the id3. Also their cars are in general to inefficient and heavy compared with Tesla models. I would probably chose a Skoda Enyaq over a Model Y provided that it has the 5 years extended warranty and that they could actually deliver the car within a reasonable time. Btw. you can't get the id3 with a trailer hitch with puts of many buyers in Denmark
@TerryHickey-xt4mf7 ай бұрын
which and off? but seriously I would have thought that there were many after market approved hitches available in most countries?

sorry, I meant too, choose, and off😃, but I am still surprised about the tow bar hitch problem. (p.s. I cannot speak your language at all! although I do have some good close friends from Denmark here in downunder land) In fact my grandparents told my dad that they were proud of being from Viking stock.

Here's the problem this car costs £38k right now but a t-cross starts @ £22k with a r line one @ £28k so ether £16k or £10k cheaper. Let's say you keep it 4 years then you have a minimum of £2.5k to spend on petrol and right now @ £1.40 per litre that £2.5k will get you roughly 20k miles so even if the EV was charged for free id still be worse off ?
