XC90 - Very chilled place to be! Relaxing drive and it eats miles. Towing large camping trailer this summer achieved 38mpg on 400mile trip, saved the battery charge for town and manoeuvring. (Battery is wasted on long motorway, though this would be true for any of these). Engine is barely audible unless you stand on the throttle. Especially like the heated & cooled seats in the front when it's warm out.

Worth adding the XC90 supports one pedal drive on its electric system which is nice for anyone used to driving a full EV with it. Not sure if the Merc does, but the BMW does not. Nice advantage for the Volvo.

The biggest issue going back to ICE from a one pedal EV is the shock of having to use the brake again! I guess given Volvo EVs do this well, the company understands the value of it?

I've got a C300e Estate plug-in hybrid. 25 kWh battery in current UK winter I get 60 miles range. Summer I'm hoping 68 miles. Great car, never use the fuel really unless I'm having a bit of fun or a long distance drive
@rosse670523 күн бұрын
I had a c300e for a few months and done the opposite haha. I always used the 2.0 engine it has and never used the ev side of it. It was a loan car but it was a great all rounder. I do think it's a bit of a gimic though having both as I think most people will only use one. So I'd rather just buy the c300 with the engine only or for someone like yourself who uses the electric side of the car and rarely the engine might as well just go and buy a full electric car. Having that extra weight on board for either one of them doesn't make sense if you only use one and also the extra cost when buying the car just to only use half of it's capability.
@markmicallef436710 күн бұрын
I also own a C300e, full time, not for a few months! It's great and best of both worlds. I drive mostly in EV mode with no range anxiety and manage to just charge it to 80% (80km) at home mostly everyday. It's funny when people say you're carrying an extra engine, what if you had a bigger battery, is that weightless? I say again, there's no range anxiety and it's fun to drive with both power sources pushing you along, but for everyday city driving, the EV part is fantastic. On the highway, mostly in hybrid mode on very very long drives. Great car

They come on every now and then. Perhaps once a month on my PHEV if I'm not doing a longer journey, but to be honest, most people will go farther than the battery at least once a month! So yes, you can run around for 30-40 miles as an EV. The latest VW EVs go for around 80 miles on a charge.

Really useful, thanks. I have a 2021 Tesla 3 RWD standard plus but I don’t find it great at anything if I’m honest. It’s an OK vehicle, in fact my first EV excluding an EV motorbike and I miss the SUV height, the comfort and would prefer a longer range. In this uk weather I get about 200 real world miles on a full charge, which is simply not enough eg Manchester to London without stopping…. Although only 4 months into owning the Tesla I’m ready for a change.

What sort of efficiency does each car get in electric mode? I had a BMW 330e for a few days and it got around 2.1 m/kWh. I don’t get cheap electricity so this actually proved to cost as much as petrol to run making a 320i a better buy for my use case as the 330e struggled when out of battery. What EV would you suggest as a rival? The Model Y is smaller and not luxurious. BMW iX? I think a hybrid /EV comparison with these would be great. BMW x5 45e v iX…
@toeknee2u24 күн бұрын
The XC90 will do between 30 and 45 realistically on electric only - depending on what sort of driving you do. If you're heavy footed I'm sure you could get that sub 20 miles. I think the battery is there for town and urban driving. If you go onto motorway or extended dual carriageway put in battery save mode until you get to the next town. Realistically you need to have home charging or free work charging as it takes about 4-5 hours to charge the XC90 - overnight for me. (Those 30 - 40 miles cost me just £1.26)
@richardpiper482825 күн бұрын
Of the three I’ve only driven the X5 - actually several. Never a great fan of its size or styling but it really eats the miles in comfort and speed. Normally drive an EV but for a distance drive I would take the X5 over a Tesla.

To be fair, these are big heavy cars so won't really do very well in EV mode, especially in winter. The latest VW models with 20kwh batteries are much better and get unto 80 miles in EV mode, 500 miles in hybrid.

Unless you live in some kind of wilderness or you need to tow why would anyone need to worry about crazy complicated petrol engine, transmission and high voltage electric part of the motor plus battery. These cars only make sense when you buy them as company expense or lease, maintenance 5 years later would make them useless.

Hey guys if you are not yet aware this video will explain some technology that could improve things further for you. You could be charging your cars even faster and expand any current battery system you have with a new battery and DC charger system, that allows car to load back into the building thus making the car an extension of your battery capacity. Your Tesla cars will not allow car to load so will be excluded but it's worth looking at if only to broaden your knowledge to advise customers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnune6N8hJh4m8k . In case you are wondering I have no link to Artisan Electrics.

I had a drive in a similar BYD Seal U DM-i hybrid recently. It was quite impressive if you have to have an engine - although I thought it drove like a fossil despite it never using the engine while on test. Unsurprising as it had an 18.3kWh battery and '50 mile' range (the new version has a bigger 26.6kWh pack! 😯) I'd never choose one as I'd rather have a proper EV, but it wasn't at all bad.

@@Garrison169 What I’m trying to say is most people’s daily journey is around 18-20 miles per day. For these journeys you’re carrying around a heavy battery that doesn’t need to be that big. A PHEV can weigh 400-500kg less than the equivalent BEV, run in EV mode 95% of the time yet give twice the range.
@Garrison16920 күн бұрын
@@sargfowler9603 I can drive my EV for about 3 cents a mile, year round. Charging at my lowest rate during the winter, it's one lousy penny a mile. There's no advantage to a PHEV on a road trip. Charging the battery with the ICE is inefficient. Fifty miles of EV is meaningless on a road trip and you are lugging around an engine and its transmission. EVs do not have a transmission.. I don't stop any more often with my EV than I want to for other reasons. Charging stations are available wherever you go in the US and they almost always have amenities, as the stores want them nearby to attract business. Most PHEV drivers don't want to be bothered with the complexities of choosing the options that give them the best range. PHEVs have complex electronics that attempts to marry a ICE to a motor. When the battery dies, the PHEV engine is often called upon to immediately deliver power from a cold start. This is hard on a ICE since it has not yet warmed up and lubricated. Bottom line - Most drive a PHEV out of range anxiety. As an EV driver, I know that I would have to deliberately put myself in a bad situation to find myself stranded somewhere. The navigation system plans your route well and accurately, telling you when you should stop to charge and how long you will be there. Usually, that is around 20 minutes. That's hardly time enough for a cup of coffee and a pit stop. Having something to eat always takes longer than it does to charge. Another nice thing - I enjoy something different after all the boring driving I have done in ICE cars. It's a different world. The acceleration is mind blowing and it is silent. Oh, and there are no oil changes, no hoses to worry about bursting, no engine air or oil filter, no plugs or wires, none of the expensive repairs an ICE may need and because of regenerative braking, the brakes last the life of the car.
