Castle Drogo was one of the most cold, depressing places I've ever visited. You could sense the feeling of loss as soon as you walked in, and the room dedicated as a memorial to the deceased son by the grief-stricken Mrs. Drew was almost unbearable to view. I couldn't wait to get back outside to the sun.

Apart from Spooner who appears to be drunk, the comments are interesting. Lutyens was a genius and for anyone who has been to Delhi and seen the grand scale of his work as the Empire was in its last gasps of grandeur he was second to none in capturing national identity, history and emotion in bricks and stone. I will never be rich enough to live in one of his houses, but they are a great contribution to our heritage. The National Trust is a wonderful organization and, like America's National Parks, should be defended by everyone as the guardians of our past and future.

As much as I have been enjoying the regular episodes of the series, I find the special episodes to be much more informative and less 'reality' tv dramatic, giving the viewership much more credit to listen and learn than some of the gimmicks that popped up from time to time..

When they showed the monument for the missing dead, it struck me how appropriate the arches were, it like the building represents the missing tombstones.

I used to be a Forensic Architecture Technician. From that standpoint, this building is a nightmare. On another note, as an undergrad, I studied Gertrude Jeckyll for a presentation. But I don’t remember Lutyens at all. Hey s designs are so cool, you’d never guess the age if you didn’t know his style. EDIT: I remember studying the New Delhi capitol building too, but still didn’t remember the Architect!

NO mention of 100 King Street, in Manchester, what used to be the Midlands Bank building, built between 1933 and 1934. When I heard his name I immediately thought of that building.

That's the difference between medieval stone masons who apprenticed for seven years working on a castle seasonally for a long for an average Of twenty five years to build a structure fit for a king and some industrialist fantasy made with a single type of oncrete. Even the Romans knew better than to build this way lol. The forum in rome, for example is built with varying levels of fill making its concrete lighter as you go higher in its arch. "Castlr" drogo is a modern fantasy much the same way as fake stone veneer and it shows big time.

I simply fail to see why people think Lutyens was a great architect - I think his designs were poor and technical skills weak

No matter your feelings, you should be proud to have had shows like Time Team & its off shoot shows. Tho you seem to be stuck with the, IMO, stupid, T&A shows of boys bitig their hands when a girl walks by in a bikini & how to win by targeting one another in a game of human chess. What amazes me is how long they've lasted being produced. In the USA too. Plus Dancing With the Stars, etc. Mind numbing. I'd rather learn something & fortunately KZbin in America has so many shows from the world over. Plus, really terrible 1950's SciFi movies. Them, Saucer Men from Outer Space, etc...lol
