Love Dunphy usually but he is wrong here and not just about what he is saying about Terry. Cunningham is given an opinion here as is Dunphy and he does not need to qualify or proof it like Dunphy wants him to. It is obvious Dunphy is gunning for Cunnigham because of earlier disagreements and it makes Dunphy look very immature. And going back to the main point of the argument I also agree with Cinningham in that whilst Terry would have been the better player for England on the pitch as they were leaderless (Gerard is no captain) the bringing of Terry into the squad could have caused more harm than good by fracturing the camp.

+Jack Betal But based off the season he had in 2013/2014 and his ever growing partnership with Cahill he would have been great to come into that locker room and be a leader for the team. That is the problem with football these days where are the men who lead a team and take responsibility for a team when things are going wrong? I think Eamon was right to make Cunningham bring up a counter to saying that he would fracture a dressing room. As Eamon said there is no proof he would have where as when he's been at Chelsea through the good and bad times currently, I would guarantee that he would go in there and try and motivate players and lift moral. After the performance of the Italy game if they lost even with him in the squad he would have surely gone in after the game or even during the game to perform better and tighten up the mistakes either in that game of for the Uruguay one. I think at times players do retire young from International where they could play a vital role in giving a lot more moral and leadership to a team in times of despair. If Hodgson thought it was a good idea to bring in Lallana & Lambert in based of their seasons which is lacking a lot in team selections for England to base a players inclusion based on performance a guy like Terry who has proven to lift dressing rooms and be a leader I can only see that as a positive rather then a negative. He would do it in such a way to teach the next crop of young talents coming through this is what we need to do and this is what we will do in games. England have a manager who picks people based on notoriety rather then actual performance and talent. There are talents out there, maybe not to win a Euros but o better in tournaments and show at least the passion talent and skill that they clearly have to do well. It will be the same England as usual next year over hyped and do nothing. A guy like Vardy might have the chance to be in the squad going next year if he continues the run he is on but it will more likely be Rooney up front whos legs are gone. Cunningham has the right to give his opinion but when he doesn't back it up makes it not a strong opinion saying the inclusion of Terry could fracture a dressing room is beyond an idiotic statment to make in my eyes.

I can see where both are coming from. Terry would have definitely been the better player to have on the pitch, but given that it would have required the manager to go and ask him, would have belittled the manager and the players that got the team into the cup.

A difficult argument to 'win' as they were both discussing hypotheticals. Cunningham that JT would hit squad spirit badly and Dunphy that he would improve the defence. But wasn't it all a bit of a non-starter? After the racism legal case would the FA have gone near JT? Or he them? I very much doubt it.

Bringing in Terry for a last stand when the English have got numerous limitations in other areas would of been a complete mistake by Hodgson. In the end he did right, England went out like they should of done because they're undeniably attempting a reinvention of their style and players. just need to crack on with that now...Dunphy's view was too short sighted

Kenny Cunningham is right to be honest, Dunphy is just being his usual thick self. Typically when Cunningham is on the panel, the standard of punditry goes up to a great degree, just look at how he tore apart Richie Sadlier's feeble and naive assertion with regard to Lavezzi spraying the Argentine manager with the water bottle. He can see the bigger picture which most of the others on the RTÉ panel are rather incapable of doing. Dunphy's great for a laugh, but his analysis should rarely be taken seriously; the burden of proof is on Cunningham?? Nope, that's not how it works, it's Dunphy who is making the assertion with regard to John Terry improving the team as a whole, where's HIS proof?

Cunningham is entitled to his opinion. Dunphy's entitled to his. Our culture doesn't seem to be able to accept opposing points of view. Terry might have brought some tension to the dressing room and maybe Hodgeson didn't want to deal with that aspect. Terry would have marshalled the English defence better, but who knows ultimately.

Man I just don't like Kenny Cunningham. I fact I can't stand him. Neither were wrong really tbh, but I just found myself hoping Eamon won. He's just very passive aggressive, very serious, he always comes off as being miserable too, and he always looks like he's about to beat the shit out of anyone who disagrees. Haven't always been crazy about Kenny Cunningham, but I gotta say he's probably the best football pundit on the RTE panel nowadays. With him only being out of the game for a few years, he's got a much fresher way of looking at things. Plus he actually analyses things from a footballing perspective, unlike the old boys, especially Dunphy who is far too much of a sensationalist. Giles chips in occasionally with his bit about midfielders, but overall they've got a very outdated view of the game, especially those aspects of the game that weren't as prevalent in their days.
@manbearpiglett-41106 жыл бұрын
I've never seen someone get SOO much from the effect of their OWN words, as Eamon Dunphy! Literally 5 seconds into his ears receiving the shit-filled honey from his mouth, the smirk starts up. Honestly have never seen someone visibly becoming so happy listening to the sound of his own voice. Not even anti-Dunphy, just recognising fact. The Cockneys would call him chocolate/chocolato: he wants a piece of himself, feels so tasty he'd want to eat himself. Cunningham is an angry, defensive guy, but he's not high on himself, he's just a walking hemorrhoid doing his best Clint Eastwood impersonation. Good tv all the same though, RTE, get em back on!
