RTL SDR V4 update and personal comments on the new device

There are some improvements but overall even the RTL SDR blog says...you got the V3 .you do not need the V4

Same thing on linux. Have to blacklist in the modprob directory. Had to recompile SDR++, too. Worst is that the V4 seems deafer, especially on HF and MW. But I haven't done enough comparisons yet. Which now have to be done on separate machines: you can swap with software surgery each time.

It's hard to tell from the store Page but do they have a link to the V4 on Amazon or are they only selling the V3 still on amazon?

If they're out of stock they probably aren't going to list the v4 until they have enough stock.

Can I use V4 with android? It says it's possible, but I haven't seen any KZbin videos. Should I buy it to use with Android?

What frequencies are Hurricane Spotters/Storm Chasers on?

That highly depends on the person/group and location, some strom spotters/chasers only use something like a GMRS radio for car to car coms, and use a cellphone to call anything in, so unless you're close to them you're not going to hear anything (many storm chasers live stream on KZbin and some on twitch so you can just watch their live streams). Now some storm spotters talk on a repeater that serves dual function (standard Ham use, and ARES Skywarn for bad weather, and that's going to depend entirely on location, but it's only going to be for the area the repeater is in. Now for the hurricane net, the frequencies they use is located on their website.

Images were the big problem for V3, so if that's reduced, then the V4 is attractive, particularly for $30.

I wouldn't waste my money on it. I would rather get something that's great instead of getting something that's pretty mediocre at best. The RTL-SDR V3 just about turned me off from shortwave listening because it was pretty poor reception on the SW bands. Heck even in the VHF/UHF frequencies it's not really that great, you still get a load of images.

RX888 mkII and other USB 3.0 devices? Setup is somewhat a mess for RX888 tho.

An RTL-SDR V3 maxes out around 2.4MHz of spectrum width, something like the SDRPlay RSP1A I think is around 8MHz-10MHz. And there are vastly more expensive ones thats capable of even wider.

What would be great is a self contained LCD display and keypad to enter frequency and have a way to have a CPU and tf card with software to run the SDR. So we could have a scanner that does DMR and phase 1 & 2 digital trunk The ham radios from China that are 60 dollars and do DMR slot 1 & 2 direct keypad entry are so close to the dream of a ham radio that does DMR and phase 1 and 2 digital. A receive only radio scanner that does DMR and digital trunking would be awesome. I remember when these ham radios came out, and a single VHF band handheld was 180 dollars Dual band was 280 Tri band was 380 These 30 dollar China radios do what that 380 dollar radio did, and more Until these radios hit the market the big 3 ham radio companies had a stranglehold on the market in America Uniden has that same stranglehold on the scanner market A scanner for 100 dollars that does what an 800 dollar Uniden does would change the scanner market forever and a lot of people, I mean tens of millions, would buy that 100 dollar scanner The problem with the RTL SDR USB stick and even the raspberry pi that the stick plugs into and gives the DMR and phase 1 digital, it is a lot of work and a lot of messing with it constantly to use it If a company made a simple scanner interface with the buttons to do direct entry and arrows and enter and back and forward to navigate a menu system, that would be a great idea. I have a dual SDR USB stick box that I use on the computer and it works great but it too is a lot of messing with it Where my Uniden WS1080 I select the DMR channel, which is a little work, but once I am on it, I just leave it there and it works and I can put it into a scan list and get to it easily again if I want to scan and return. Same with the phase 2 digital simulcast systems and I select a Talkgroup and program it to a scan list and can scan and browse the items in the scanlist even though they are on totally separate systems We need an SDR USB stick with a LCD and keyboard and power supply in a self contained box.

Heck you can modify a Uniden BC355n to have a discriminator tap on it, hook it up to a cheap PC and run something like DSD+ and decode DMR, Fusion, D-Star, P25 phase 1 and 2, NXDN, and a few other digital modes. Heck you don't even need to use the control frequency, just need to know the frequency range that the control frequency assigns out. I slapped a kit like that together for my own use for around $120 (it would have been more if someone didn't give me the BC355n scanner for free.), I paid $70 for the minis forum N4020 and around $30 for the tiny screen, and around $20 for a USB sound blaster play! 3 for better audio input (as the onboard input on the mini PC just wasn't good enough). You can pretty much do the same thing just replace the scanner with the SDR (better with multiple SDRs if you're going to trunk track).

Even for $30 it's not worth it, I mean some things that have improved, but it's not a game changer. I'd save up and get a more expensive SDR like an SDRPlay RSP1A and get a great experience and little to no headaches.

if you have a sdrplay and want the option to run sdr sharp without buying a airspy it is a tempting option .

IF THERE IS ANYONE WHO HAS FIGURED OUT HOW TO GET THIS TO WORK WITH A MAC M1 PLEASE POST HOW. I tried Parallels. I tried native, I give up!
