People usually miss this, but there is no way this was Eckbert’s long term plan. Remember, he begged Lagertha and Aethelstan to stay. He absolutely would know they wouldn’t abide killing the settlement and how much more would doing that piss off Ragnar if it happened with Lagertha and Aethelstan there and possibly part of the killing? This was an audible Eckbert called when he got dissed by Lag and Aethelstan leaving him.
