This movie was severely watered down, he actually saved about 150, but being humble in life he only took credit for 50, so they put 75 to honor him. There were some moments so incredible irl that they didn't even put it in the movie because people would think it was just movie theatrics, like when a Japanese soldier shot at Desmond as he was treating a wounded soldier, the gun jammed, Japanese soldier clears the jam and fires a shot into the ground to make sure it worked, aimed at Desmond again and the gun jammed a second time, making the Japanese soldier give up and move on. There were so many stories like that of his time up there it's crazy, at some point soldiers wouldn't even go up to the ridge if he wasn't going to be with them.

The fact the creators of the movie actually TONED DOWN Doss's feats still blows my mind. The army's number showed Doss saved close to 150 people. Doss humbly disagreed stating it couldn't have been more than 50. They decided to compromise on the number of 75 saved. Just at Okinawa. He actually served a lot longer than that, all without carrying a gun, while starving due to being a vegetarian. He was eventually discharged because his legs got shredded. He contracted TB while in recovery as well. At least two japanese soldiers experienced weapon malfunction while attempting to kill Doss. Everytime they would aim at him and pull the trigger the gun would jam. Aimed somewhere else and fired, gun worked, aimed back at Doss, weapon jammed. Then all the reports of men refusing to go in to the field without Doss praying for them. One time, two squads, one consisting of Doss went out. The squad without Doss, not a single man returned. When Doss's squad returned, they asked how many they lost. They couldn't believe it when 0 casualties were reported from Doss's squad. Near the end when he was officially removed from active combat, in his final battle, his legs were so shredded he could no longer walk, and he ended up with a broken arm. He splinted his arm with a broken rifle barrel he found. And while crawling, he continued to treat injured soldiers. He consistently surrendered his own stretcher for other wounded men. Including one time they were carrying him off the field and he demanded the medics stop and take another soldier first. At one point, he lost his bible in the field and was heartbroken. The men in his squad went straight back to an active warzone and searched for 3 days to find his bible. Go watch the Conscientious Objector documentary on YT. If you are interested in Doss it is the best source of info.

The Pacific battles were always no holds bar events. The Japanese did not sign the Geneva Convention rules of war and committed many war crimes on both civilians and enemy combatants. You saw 3 in Hacksaw Ridge. 1. Targeting medics. In Saving Private Ryan you notice that the Germans didn't deliberately target medics. The Japanese actually paid a bounty to soldiers that killed medics. 2. Killing wounded soldiers. 3. Using a white flag to attack the enemy. At the beginning of the movie Andtew Garfield is reciting a Bible passage from the book of Isiah. Towards the end of the movie you Desmond do some unbelievable things under unbelievable conditions. First consider that 1. He was a vegetarian and therefore didn't have the extended energy that protein provides, 2. He contacted tuberculosis while overseas which was diagnosed in 1946. During the battle he had to fight back coughing so as not to alert the enemy, 3. Desmond was not a big man. He was 5'8" tall and weighed 145 lbs. NOW go back to Isiah 40: 28-31. "...the Lord gives strength to the weak...they will not grow weary." FINALLY consider that in a 12 hour period Desmond carried, dragged, and lowered a minimum of 11,250 pounds (assuming a minimum weight for each man 150 lbs X 75 men = 11,250 lbs. minimum.) Where did Desmond get the strength and stamina to do what he did? Does the answer lie in Isiah?

He had to have a lung and 5 ribs removed. He was discharged in 1951 and was given 90% VA disability. He continued to be given antibiotic treatment until the early 70's where an antibiotic overdose made his deaf. He retrieved 100% VA disability after that. He got a cochelar implant in 1988 where he regained In 1991, his first wife that you saw in the movie contracted cancer and while taking her to the hospital for treatment, his car hydroplaned in the rain and she died in the accident. I have to say ultimate respect to you all for doing war movie reactions - because it is just so important even more so of your sort of age range, that recognition is given to these movies where so much sacrifice was given and of course amongst some of the wars gone before sadly where those that served at the time were let down in one way or another. I wonder would you all consider doing reaction to Battle of Britain, the whole movie is on KZbin already but no reactor has ever done a reaction to it only ever seen someone do reaction to the opening scene. Admittedly it is obviously a much older movie but it is highly regarded as 1 of the greatest depictions of that period of WW2 when the RAF ultimately prevailed in stopping Hitlers Luftwaffe from wiping them out to conquer the skies of Britain for invading. It has a huge list of all star top name cast of the time and as said is hugely brilliant and faithful film to the events of the period, just huge shame as yet no one done reaction to it.
