Great work on the comparison. One thing I wish more people would do is point out testing with lower game settings. I know it gives a great baseline to test in standard "high/max" settings, but on things like the 6GB 3060, it's going to tank performance. And let's be honest - NOBODY is going to notice huge (or even any) differences in 'medium' vs 'high' settings, especially when gaming on the laptop screen itself. Unless you're in the business of pausing games and taking screenshots, then flipping back and forth to find differences, lowering settings can often net real gains with no humanly-discernible differences (esp. if you're actually moving around and playing the game).

Part of me has a bit of buyer's remorse for not going 3070, especially with a 1440p (external) screen. That said, I couldn't muster paying $600-700 more. I figured paying $150 each for each respective GPU& CPU upgrade (so an additional $300) might have been reasonable, and was even prepared to take a 500GB hit on storage (mine came with 1TB). I don't think I have the right machines to make that possible. I haven't had a 5 Pro for 4+ months, for instance. I have the G15 for the 2nd time and have tested it with external screen and the same RAM as the 5 pro memory change video so I suppose you could manually compare those results when the 6800M comparisons come out.

I have a laptop with a gtx 1060 and only 3GB of VRAM. Up until last year it may have struggled a bit to run games on maximum settings at 1080p apart from a few exceptions like RDR2 on high and 900p (Needs at least 4 - 5 GB VRAM for ultra textures), but performance overall was acceptable. After games like AC Valhalla released demanding even greater VRAM amounts, the GPU truly showed it's age and memory limitations. I have to resort to playing my games and looking at basically mud with medium textures and 900p mainly because I don't have enough virtual memory. If it were up to me I'd go for 3070 not thinking twice just because of the 8 gigs. Give it a year or two and only 6GB of VRAM available for 3060 will make it struggle with the newest titles. The GPU will be able to hold up good framerates but you will have to unavoidably lower the texture detail and textures as well as resolution are among the settings that define your game's visuals the most (1080p is just perfect even for 17inch laptops).

Considering the way games are very scalable with adjustable detail level settings, I don't think an 8 GB vram graphics card is going to be that much more future proof than an 6 gb one, especially when 16 gb cards come out in a couple years from now.

@SF-li9kh3 жыл бұрын
Like Jarrod mentioned, performance can't be linearly compared. The "outliers" are actually windows to the future. 30fps for 8GB titles with 6GB VRAM not only has baaaad performance but it was also stuttering, based on the 1% lows. So the 3070 is the only sensible option

I am actually quite impressed with the Dell G15 5800h+3060 (165Hz 1080p screen) laptop I bought a couple of days ago, but when I saw the video on youtube talking about the TCC setting in the bios of the Alienware M15 R5 3070 that allows you to limit the max temps for the CPU, and I was able to buy one refurbished from BestBuy with a $500 Canadian discount, I pulled the trigger on the Alienware M15 R5. Going to confirm that it doesn't have any problems first, but assuming it's basically a Dell G15 with a metal case, 3070 8GB, and a much better keyboard, I'm probably going to be quite happy with it.

Everything is a side grade from delta 15 except 3070 is better than 6700m and bigger screen(i find 15.6 too small to enjoy triple a games, competitive games its fine i guess). Oh and legion has bad ram appearently, i dont plan to upgrade ram as legion was already 270 more than delta, 1300 vs 1570 price not including taxes. Screen should be okay coming from delta, 144hz from 240 so not as high refresh rate, but its slightly brighter than delta at 314 vs 323 nits.

the 3060 would definitely squash the 3070 (80W TDP). I got the 3060 with the new i7-12700H. Intel's Alder Lake is so fast and power-hungry and paired with 3060, they blow your mind. My 3060 is capped at 140W (boost) and my CPU occasionally goes to 80-90W when playing intensive games, with a 129 W draw from the GPU at the same time. So it's more like max load, the best from the CPU and GPU...
