RTX 3090 Coil Whine driving me insane...

Small update on what I'm planning on doing with this build and a sneak peek at what to expect over the next few weeks from this channel.
Coil whine can go away or develop over time and is completely unpredictable. Sadly, what is true is the higher the power draw and FPS, the more likely you'll experience coil whine. The water block helps dampen the noise but in a silent build, it's painfully obvious, to the point where I can't stand it anymore...

My 3090 FE had annoying Coil Whine at stock clock's. It would boost to 1950mhz and over 1000+ mV. After an undervolt of 837mV and 1900mhz, I now have next to no Coil Whine. Also no noticeable reduction in performance. Maybe 2-5 FPS in a very few games. I even now get better benchmark scores due to the lower temps after replacing the thermal pads and paste. 68c Max Core , 86c Max Memory Junction. Original FE Air Cooler

Hey man. I fixed the coil whine on my 3080 by changing my PSU. It started when I put a waterblock on my card and I thought I messed it up. Ended up troubleshooting and found out the PSU wasn’t charging the caps on the PCB properly. Hope you find a way to fix yours.

Mine sounds like I'm standing next to a high voltage transformer. It's super annoying because depending on the FPS I pull which is usually 120 to 250 in most games it just gets louder. So it kicks on and off constantly and every time you go into a menu. Nvidia says its normal but yeah super annoying. Driving me nuts.

Limit your fps dummy. No need for games to get above 144+ fps

Have a U shaped plexiglass placed just in front of it to have the noise redirected ( even try that with just card board to see it that works). You can see the components, won’t have to move anything and should dampen the sound.

My 4080FE has this kind of buzzing coil whine. I sent it back but RMA was not accepted, so I'll be getting it back shortly. Funny thing though, the temporary 1080ti I bought to use while waiting has a more howling/screaming kind of coil whine, which made me kind of regret sending in the 4080. So now I'm looking forward to getting it back and having a less noisy pc lol...

Stan awesome build man very clean.. I was wondering if you could do two single 140mm radiators and stack them. Have one for the CPU and one for the GPU? I know you would need another pump/res combo but they make some small ones that attached to the other side of the radiators etc.. Do you think it would help the CPU and GPU with lower temps? PS if that coil whine is bothering you I will take that 3090/Ek setup of your hands ;)

You could create an aesthetically pleasing attachment to absorb the coil whine frequency. I bet a small piece of black foam (like neoprene) would do the trick.

I guess just pay attention to the temps you're getting during gaming. If you notice things starting to climb, you'll know the rust is starting to have an effect on the system. At that point you can swap out the component.

Been following your vids man. How do you measure the distance accurately if you're bending the tube. I'm having trouble getting a good fit.

What I do is have a piece of 90 tubing that I have pre bent and use as a template. The prebent 90 already has marks on it to tell me where I start the bend. I then attach a straight piece inside the computer and line up that template. That allows me to visually see where the bends need to be and also mark where I need to clamp and start the bend on the new tube. It's a lot of trial and error for sure but with that template, it cuts down on a lot of rework.

Its kind of weird coinsidence that today I received my 3080 and I have a similar problem and you just uploaded this video. Also your review of LG 38GN made me order the same monitor and I received it two weeks ago. Amazing monitor but because I use a second display for some reason when I lock my pc and it goes blank, when I come back it moves all my tabs to my LG38 and the mouse lags for 5 seconds. Not sure if you have similar problem with the monitor. Anyways, thanks for everything you do man. Your videos have helped me alot. Cheers!

Sounds like second monitor is slow to react and when resuming your system only detects your main monitor the LG38 so naturally everything goes to that screen. It may be freezing because it's trying to swap from one monitor mode to dual monitor modes. A random thought but try to see if there's any way to disable "eco" mode or whatever on that second monitor.

Did u find a fix for this? I just got my new flashy RTX 3080 Asus ROG card in white - LOVE the looks. But in WoW (i can see you play aswell), the coilwhine is fcking annoying. The sound goes away as soon as i alt-tab to another program or desktop. The sound also goes away if you cap your fps to around 150.

I have coil whine from hell, I eventually evaded the problem by putting my pc in the hallway behind a wall which acts as a shockdemper., now my pc is super quiet. I was lucky that my wall connectors are next to the door to the hallway so that's how I fixed it. A wall and a door is blocking the sound. I highly recommend to try this solution if you have no other options.

my 3090 only coil whines on my 34" asus TUF monitor only. some games it goes away if there is a SSAO setting and I disable it. Anyone know a fix? I tried turning the monitor refresh rate from 165hz to 144hz still giving me issues.

which tubes do you use to bend? and with which tool do you do it? and how do you get the water cooler of the liquid devil down it is stuck together, i have a similar problem greetings from Germany

@@SuprUsrStan ok Thank you ! I want too clean the inside from the waterblock of the liquid Devil. But the Aluminium Plate with the Devil Logo is gummed up with the acrylplate. I cant Open the waterblock too clean it because the screws are covered. how do you Open your waterblock too clean ? Sorry for the bad english i hope you can understand my second question now 😅

@@ocextreme2959 Usually, you can just remove the screws that hold the acrylic onto the nickel coldplate without even taking the block off the core. However, on the LD, those screws are covered by the aluminum devil plate. I'd reach out to EKWB to see how the devil front plate is attached to the acrylic. If it's screwed in, then it may be possible disassemble it and unscrew that plate. If it's glued in, maybe they might have some suggestions on how to remove that plate.

use msi after burner and undervolt it a little :) will run cooler and may give it lil more performance

coil whines are normal. these gpu's are just too powerful and drain a lot of power. capping fps can help a lot in certain cases. i realise you dont have 3090 to cap the fps but hey... you can always get some noise canceling headphones my 2080ti had pretty bad coil whine when it was new, but it settled after few months and it was lot quieter

This is just one of the water cooling downfalls. Generally coil whine does not get “worse” by water cooling, but it can be heard much more since you’ve silenced the rest of the build. I have the Bitspower 3090 FE block and I too get coil whine. Nothing to worry about, just annoying.

Hello could my coil whine be related to my home electrical installation i swapped 4 psus 2 gold ( seasonic focus gx 750 ) ( evga gq 650) and two other bronze psus to my 6700xt nitro + . Every gpu i had had coil whine to a certain degree some worse than others . Is it luck or am i experience some interference or bad quality current

Unlikely. coil whine is mainly due to electrical components vibrating as electricity is passed through them. PSU could possibly change the pitch and loudness but I wouldn't go changing PSUs unless it's really bad and you want to go on that wild goose chase. It just sounds like you're just really unlucky.

I have a Strix 3080 Ti and omg the coil whine is bad.. Undervolting helps reduce it.. My 3090 Founders has very minor Coil Whine. My PSU for sure has coil whine.

My 3090FE has horrendous coil whine, I can hear it even in the case. I’ve undervolted the card which helped a little. Luckily I wear headphones so I don’t hear it, but I will not be able to put it into my wife’s PC when I upgrade, she definitely would not be able to put up with it.

I know what you mean. My first 3090 FE I got back in December was horrendous. These FE seem to be notorious for having coil whine. This one is much better than the last one but still has some buzzing :/

Yeah sucks manufacturers avoid cool whine in warranties... it’s a luck of the draw my 3080 gaming x trio has none and I am running a 450 watt bios. I had a Vega 56 that had it that sucked..

give it time, coil whine can settle after a while and get quieter it took my 2080ti couple of months but it got very quiet i would barely notice it from all the fans from cpu. i heard people whos coil whine settled after just few days

@@SuprUsrStan that's kind of a bad outlook lol,i get it but its not worth the extra card noise when you will still have the same if not better performance from a reasonable cap. cap yur fps slightly over monitor refresh. i was pulling like 300 fps in pubg with max settings and card was loud asf, capped to 144 with gsync/vsync and elmb on and boom, way better + like no noise in comparison. my card buzzes a bit but i think i might live it since alot of people complain about way worse whine and i dont wanna RMA lotto 5x (3080 tuf)
