Small error in the video: At 6:54 the footage is still showing Ultrawide 3440x1440p when I spoke and labeled it as if it had switched down to normal 2560x1440. If you are curious, at that same scene at 2560x1440 the 3080: 65fps 4080: 92fps ~42% faster

What’s crazy is the difference in one gpu to the next in the same series. I have a 12GB 3080 and at max settings at the same scene with DLSS off, I am getting 77 fps and it’s running at 66C. Granted I am drawing 390 watts but I’ve undervolted it and upped the clocks.

Rtx 4080 Giving 75fps on average with Rt ultra dlss performance While RX 7900XTX gives upto 62fps With RT ULTRA FSR performance officialy In benchmarks given by AMD itself So it's 18% slower than 4080 in cyberpunk rt ultra with 17% less price and 8gb more vram so it all depends on user now you want raytracing or more vram with 200$ discount

@thejackimonster9689
@thejackimonster9689 Жыл бұрын
I think even the 7900XT comes close to the performance of the 4080 if AMD's numbers are accurate. In Cyberpunk 2077 4K max settings with rasterization it should give 60fps average states AMD and the 4080 gives you 62fps as shown in the video. So I think the XTX model will beat the 4080 in rasterization without issues since it performs about 15% better than the XT model. It's still interesting to see how they compare with ray tracing, upscaling and compute tasks. But I think it's pretty impressive that AMD might actually offer something comparable for 200-300$ less with potentially even lower power budget. However I still see a lot of Blender artists picking up Nvidia GPUs. ^^'
@teacoffee5847
@teacoffee5847 Жыл бұрын
@@thejackimonster9689 yeah man, though I am waiting out for the 4090fe's to come back in stock as I believe the 4080 is a rip off. If amd could give top quality results for raytracing, 3d model building in blender and high fps in vr then I would buy an amd card. I currently have a 3080fe and vr is a bit of a struggle
@thejackimonster9689
@thejackimonster9689 Жыл бұрын
@@teacoffee5847 I mean AMD cards are totally fine for 3D modeling in Blender. Don't misunderstand me there. ^^' The main advantage of Nvidia GPUs in Blender is just the accelerated CUDA and OptiX rendering. Besides that you get way more VRAM for your money from Nvidia and capacity matters more in big 3D scenes than speed there. Blender is also some area which could turn heavily in the future since there is a Vulkan renderer in development and AMD is working on ROCm for rendering which should come close to CUDA performance when it's ready. But currently Nvidia is the better choice for artist when time is money in rendering. ^^' For VR I would even favor AMD with the new cards (RDNA3). Because Nvidia doesn't offer you an USB-C port as output. So you need to run an adapter or two cables if you don't have a wireless headset. Overall VR shouldn't make use of any ray tracing yet given that latency is even more important in VR. So you can't use any new DLSS 3.0 or FSR3 to make up for the relative slow ray tracing in comparison with rasterization because it would increase latency. Also I would expect that most VR applications won't get too graphically intense. Otherwise they wouldn't perform on the standalone headsets as well (the whole reason the metaverse still looks like Wii graphics ^^'). So in that case the display port 2.1 offer from AMD could actually make sense. Because when you think about it, you might want to have highest possible resolution and refresh rate per eye in newer headsets. I would think this is a way more realistic use case than 8K gaming. ^^'

@@thejackimonster9689 So, one of the ONLY last few pieces of my new PC build for VR sim racing on an HP Reverb G2 (which I got on sale today for $299 😁☺️) is a GPU, but I don't know what to buy... I agree these prices are ridiculous, but as someone still rocking a GT 740, I HAVE to upgrade to something, and it has to be something good enough to run VR sim racing with nicer settings on an HP Reverb G2. What am I to do? 😕 I had considered a 3080 12GB or Ti variant, but as seen in the post you responded to, his 3080 is struggling some. If I go AMD, they don't seem to bode as well with VR from some reviews, I could wait for the 7900XTX, but goodness gracious, $999 is still a LOT for a GPU... BUT, you make some good points about the Display Port 2.1. Is the 7900XTX the way to go? And I know they're supposed to have "plenty," but I feel like there is PTSD of trying to buy new GPUs when they come out, and if I wait all the way until Dec. 13th and can't get one...sigh Help, please!
@thejackimonster9689
@thejackimonster9689 Жыл бұрын
@@JoMaMaz I don't know how availability will be with AMDs cards. But I would think when they come out, you can still get a 3080. Honestly I think even $899 for the 7900XT is too expensive. But when they come out and sell well, other GPUs should automatically lower prices (not sure whether Nvidia will lower prices for the 40-series though but all others should do it). Because realistically the 6950XT needs to be at $600 probably when the new cards can be bought. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense to buy. All the other older AMD cards will need to lower prices as well then and once you get a 6800 XT at 400~500 bucks, a 3080 needs to be cheaper as well to not be ridiculous. So I think waiting for the new release will likely get you the better deal, no matter which GPU you pick. I would recommend looking for specs by other people playing what you are looking for currently and whether they state it's good enough. Overall it also depends on which headset you use, which resolution and refresh rate you target. Oh also be aware that VR can cause motion sickness and other side effects no matter how good your hardware is. Some people are just susceptible to that. So before putting a lot of money into VR, I would always recommend trying it out somewhere else. I would compare it to something like a rollercoaster in a sense that just because some people throw up, doesn't mean it's bad to everyone. But you should figure out whether you stand it or not before paying for it. ^^'

Who is the demographic? Scalpers and crypto miners. Nvidia clearly made a bet a year or two ago, during R&D for the 40-series, that the Ethereum boom would last into the beginning of 2023. That's why they created graphics cards that would be extremely powerful, but expensive and with drawbacks (size, power draw on the 4090, an unproven power connector) that would hurt gamers more than miners. When Ethereum went proof of stake, leaving miners scrambling to find other coins that would at least help them break even so they didn't have to admit that they were on the surface of a bubble that just popped, Nvidia went for their backup plan of throttling supply hard to at leasy keep scalpers in the loop, to make sure they could still sell everything, both the 30-series and the 40-series, way above MSRP. Nvidia can get away with it because of their commanding market lead. I just hope AMD realizes that a distant second place won't get anywhere doing that, and has enough of the Radeon RX 7000 series available at launch.

@fatidicusaeternus6498
@fatidicusaeternus6498 Жыл бұрын
Seems that Nvidia learned from the 30 series reviews saying going past the 3080 was poor value with such small performance increase so they really squeezed in a lot of cuda cores past the point of diminishing returns to distinguish the 4090 from the 4080. People saw this cuda core discrepancy and pre-judged the 4080 to be poor value at its MSRP.

8:27 Did you guys noticed how much more efficient 4080 is compared to 3080 at this "idle" screen? It's like 4080 - 48 Watts VS. 3080 - 113 Watts. It's interesting because both of the cards are running at "40% of power". This might mean that nvidia is trying to optimizing power usage at low power levels, meaning laptop cards might be mighty impressive this time. I'm sure AMD will be also good in mobile this time, they said this multiple times, they wanted to be power efficient. We just have to wait and see who will win :)

This entire generation of graphics cards is a deliberate attempt to destroy the PC-building and PC-gaming hobbies, and I'm actually OK with that. I really wanted to upgrade my graphics card because I wanted to get a 4K monitor (mostly for non-gaming purposes, as the bump from 1080p to 1440p is much greater than 1440p to 2160p when it comes to gaming). So the only cards that were really worth considering were the 4080 and the 7900 XTX. Those cards are so badly priced that I cannot see a time when I would be willing to make that purchase. Because I'm not buying a new graphics card, I'm also not buying a new PSU and also not buying a new monitor. Nvidia and AMD have not only hurt their own sales, but the sales of other parts of their market as well. And even if it were worth my while to upgrade, most games these days are just not fun anymore because they are nothing more than vehicles for getting you to buy crap in various sleazy monetization schemes. To be fair, I'm actually kind of glad. Because I've lost interest in what was a beloved hobby for decades (the first computer I built was a '486), other parts of my life are improving. I will miss those hobbies a lot, but I'm probably better off not indulging them, and clearly the companies that sell things to people with those hobbies no longer want their market to exist, so everyone wins.

I like how you show what setting you would need to reduce to get the same frame rate, since that is what people actually do in practice. High settings tend to be almost as good visually as ultra, but ultra is generally poorly optimized so frame rate takes a big hit that is completely disproportionate to the quality increase.

Nope, sticking to the 3090 Xtreme WB I got for $700USD that does just fine Already knew the 3090ti would be maybe 5-10% worse than the 4080 for $100's less; 90 and 90ti's are the way right now. No one is gaming at 8K, for which the top end 40 series is truly for Up here in Canada on the used market: 3090ti's are going for $1200-1400 CAD ($900-1050 USD) 3090's are going for $1000 CAD ($750 USD) 3080's for $600 CAD ($450 USD) You're either scalping, a complete idiot or just want clout if you buy a 40 series card right now. I agree with your conclusions and analysis, but what sort of a question is in the thumbnail 'is the extra $400 worth it' when comparing last gen to the new gen card??? They aren't suppose to be in linear progression (unless someone thinks like Nvidia - which is BS). I know you speak about it in your video, but why choose a thumbnail like this? it would make sense when comparing 'value' between same gen cards even between different card makers, which you have done in the past and its cool. Well done on the review itself.

1:55 bro the spikes in the frametime graph do _not_ mean the motion will be stuttery. you are completely ignoring the _content_ of the frame being sent to the monitor. yes, indeed, _most_ of the time it will _most likely_ mean that there _will_ be stutter but it is not _enough_ stutter is visible _not_ when a frame takes longer to produce, it is visible when: the _combination_ of time _and_ image content does not match what your eyes expect. suppose the following frametimes and object positions (arbitrary units) on screen. 10 ms : 1 10 ms : 2 10 ms : 3 10 ms : 4 20 ms : _6_ 10 ms : 7 10 ms : 8 (suppose we're using a V-synced 100 Hz monitor. Yes, this is a much more constrained example than what even _I_ would like to use, but I had to use this one to keep the numbers simple) and then suppose a different one 10 ms : 1 10 ms : 2 10 ms : 3 10 ms : 5 10 ms : _5_ 10 ms : 6 10 ms : 7 the frametimes for the second card are objectively better yet i would say the second one would appear stuttery more than the first.

The 4080 or 4090 for that matter only makes sense if your gaming on 4k monitors or doing video processing. Personalty I think the asking price for these cards is ridiculous. The 4080 goes for $1800+ here in Canada and the 4090 goes for $2300+ add 12% tax to these cards and it become an over bloated money grab. 👎

I was honestly really excited for this card before the announcement, I didn't blink twice at the 4090 price as that was expected, but It was just so disappointing to see the direction they've taken with this launch. Even at an msrp of 900 dollars that would have just compared so much better in price to performance to last gen. its amazing how cool and power efficient it is compared to the 3080 for the performance increase, but when you look at that price tag, all the excitement is replaced with disapointment.

Why is this video 41 minutes? The price to performance is not that way off from MSRP. $100 difference is like 9% more and I don't think people who are in that price range are crying over that. That's pretty close. And some games it does seem to be worth it to get the game over a consistent 60FPS in 4k. The other third party cards that are going for $1300-1500 are concerning but we have to see what their performance is and how they handle OCing

I always hear reviewers saying "it makes no sense to buy a GPU this high-end for 1080p", seemingly not realizing that some of us are looking to keep the GPU for years to come. Now, why not buy a new GPU every gen you say? Well, first off you'd have to deal with release bugs in drivers (and other long-standing bugs), which you won't with the older GPU. Sure, you may miss a few features, but in my experience the higher-end GPU's also won't start lagging behind (stuttering, for example), as quickly which could be because the hardware is imbalanced (far more common with mid- and low-end GPU's in my experience). Not all of us have a stable enough economy to buy GPU's regularly either, and will save up to get something higher-end, but still sensibly priced for what you get (so not a 4090, for example). I'd really like to see reviewers take this into account and not just say "don't get x for x thing (resolution, for example)". Especially as VRR monitors are becoming more widely used. I could probably add more to this, but I just wanted to give some quick food for thought.

One thing I learned decades ago is not to get too hung up on the potential for hardware to collapse in price. Sure, you want to try to be as efficient as you can be with your money but you cannot predict future prices. The mindset to have is one of building a system that will last you for a set amount of time where you then replace it in it's entirety. I then to go for the 3-4 year mark
