I can relate to this woman's children. My mom has borderline personality disorder and she can be sweet as pie one minute and flip a switch and turn aggressive the next. I don't have a good relationship with her now that I'm older. Your story reminded me of something my mother has told me before. She’s a hairstylist and gets all kinds of clients, and I’ve also worked for years in customer service. She’s told me how sometimes the meanest grouchiest customers/clients etc can be turned around when you show them patience, try to help them out etc instead of returning their meanness to them, and in some cases it’s true! Your neighbor seemed to know you understood her and you showed compassion to her and boom she became quite a different person because of the way you handled her with empathy when she was going through the difficult time of the loss of her husband. Sometimes that’s all it takes to turn someone around like that, a listening ear and compassion. My mother has stories like that with customers and I have stories like that as well. It doesn’t work with everybody, but when you can sense that this person just isn’t used to being handled with patience, that’s usually when your kind behavior towards them does the job, not that it’s easy:)

I’d say there’s a few things going on here: 1. She came over to tell you about her husband’s health problems because she probably doesn’t have too many people to talk to (probably driven a lot away with her sour attitude). 2. A moment presented itself. She could use remorse as a way of deflecting what had happened in the past (her ego was too big to admit she was wrong so you feeling sorry for her was the perfect time to reestablish a speaking relationship and forget the argument). 3. Who knows what her parents were like (or what her relationship was like with her husband). I’d guess that she’s a bit older now and likes things going her way. So she finally has freedom but now that she has it... it’s lonely (grass isn’t always greener). She’s just excited to have any human interaction these days, so she’s excited whenever she sees you. Based on your description, I’d say you handled this situation very well. The hug part really showed that you were the bigger person.

If you need clorox wipes you might want to try a local mom and pop type store to get wipes. There's a tiny mom and pop grocery store here and they've managed to keep sanitizing wipes, bleach, hand sanitizer, etc. in stock because they have a smaller customer base and didn't/don't let people hoard, because of that there's usually enough for everyone.

I didn't expect that but it was better than something overly juicy where I would've felt enraged by the ending anyway 😅 THANK YOU Green Beauty! Oh and as far as other ideas of what I want to hear about, I'd love more of those psychology talks like the one you did on attachments in adults, that was incredibly interesting. This one ASMRtist I found recently, Be Brave Be You, did this mental intake psychiatrist role play where she pretended she was admitting you into a psychiatric hospital due to self-harm and it was very comforting and warm and one of the first thoughts I had was, "this is amazing and Green Beauty could do a GREAT version of this, too" so something like that would be really cool. I love when you talk about the things you've learned in your career, it's fascinating and relaxing all at once. Couldn't ask for a better combo!

This is a good lesson in questioning everything, specifically the old adage of “respect your elders”. Do we really need to respect our elders? Do they deserve it? In some cases, no. In some cases, yes. It depends on the person. But ask yourself, does why does this person deserve my respect, if at all? I feel like that quote was created as a way to prevent young people from hurting older people’s feelings. As a way to say “I am the adult, you aren’t, do what I say”. I say we change that phrase to “Respect your elders, if they deserve it”

pain can completely morph a person. this is actually a beautiful story. i’m sure she’d been bottling up all this rage and pain from the lack of relationship with her daughter, grandchildren, etc, that her husband dying was just the tipping point. instead of becoming even more bitter and hostile, she just let go. simply let go. it seems as though she was tired of fighting. and that’s because of you. you showed her kindness, warmth, and love, something she most likely hadn’t felt in a long, long time. you’re an amazing person, hope you’re staying safe xx
