RU Talk: Art & Permaculture - Intersections for Collective Growth

Through their involvement with Quinta das Relvas, an NGO based in Portugal, co-founder and director Beatriz Manteigas and artist, curator, AIR and program coordinator Noemi Ferreira present their ongoing research that lies at the intersection of art and permaculture.
By introducing the NGO’s manifesto, history, mission, goals, and key projects, the Quinta das Relvas team offers theoretical insights into how this intersection contributes to today’s pressing ecological challenges. Their perspectives are drawn from various disciplines, such as visual arts, philosophy, and ecology. Building on a brief introduction to Permaculture, Beatriz’s PhD research (Life Line: How to Draw Metaphors of the Real), and examples from Quinta das Relvas’ artist-in-residence programs, Beatriz and Noemi share their experiences in fostering this interdisciplinary approach. They demonstrate how it has become a dynamic and organic path toward collective growth - not only for participants but also for the team - rooted in the values of intersubjectivity and solidarity. This presentation also feature artworks developed within the framework of the Quinta das Relvas residency program illustrating the rich outcomes of this collaboration.
