Rubber Dam Isolation, Part 1: Punching Maxillary Holes

A thin square sheet called a rubber dam, also referred to as a dental dam, is used to separate the surgical site from the remainder of the mouth. A hole in the middle of a dental rubber dam enables the dentist to seal off the treatment area with a dental clamp around the tooth. Dental professionals can employ non-latex alternatives if a patient has a latex allergy even though dental dams are often constructed of latex. So I’ve been Endodontist for 20 years and thought I’d do some fine tuning if rubber dam technique for my assistants and myself. Great as always dear doctor Stevenson But I have few questions How do you know that you have punched the correct diameter of the tooth? If you chose a larger diameter or a smaller diameter how to correct such errors Thanks in advance

Largest hole for clamped molar Next largest for molar Medium for premolars Small for maxillary incisors Extra small for mandibular incisors If the hole size is wrong you need to replace the dam or just try to manage as is.

Hey doc, for the upcoming parts of rubberdamology, could I please suggest that you give us some handy tips on placing rubber dams when restoring a class II cavity? I often find that once I place my dam on, my wedge and sectional matrix band keeps getting resistance from the dam.
