Both versions have their pros. The original makes use of its 3D nature to bring some fluid animation and sweeping shots, but because it's Volume 1, there aren't many textures to speak of making some things look a bit flat. Meanwhile, where the anime lacks in animation and choreography, it makes up for it with lots of flair and detailed shots.

The problem is this combat choreography is specifically one of the greatest strength of RWBY. It makes it stand out. Combined with the short humour fitting inside the rhythm it's a reason why personally I started watching RWBY in the first place. The anime is... like other anime. I don't see it standing out in any way. If I want cool skill effects, I'll just watch lastest Fate or something. Even 1:17 Weiss feels like some basic anime princess instead of proud and cold Weiss that at least isn't present in every 90s shounen. And since I'm nitpicking already, the 0:43 levitation on runes should just be deleted, it pains to watch this dynamic as a log movement. xD

From this one scene we can see the original definitely has more spirit poured into it, a testament to the passion by the original creators. Small details like the rope shaking from tension, Ruby's launch creating a shockwave and blasting off rocks, bits of the cliff face coming off as the Nevermore gets dragged up. I also prefer the sound effects of Ruby's rifle-scythe in the original, it feels heavier and really sounds like it has recoil. The movement in the anime feels awkward, when Weiss corrected Ruby's trajectory and it looked like she was just floating instead of soaring through the air with momentum. In terms of dialogue there is also large contrast which could be attributed to cultural differences. The original has more wit to it while the conversations in the anime is standard anime fare. One thing the anime has over the original are the stills, shots look prettier and have a lot more detail. Overall from what I've seen in clips online the anime is a bit of a letdown (for now) but SHAFT is one of the better studios out there and the staff behind this is good (we have Uro-butcher on board) so I'll eagerly wait for the future episodes especially those that diverge from the original story.

the nostalgia is very noticeable, you mention the details of the original but you don't mention the errors it has like the lousy animation of the legs when running and you don't mention that the anime has details that the original doesn't have, like when Weiss helps ruby in the final attack it has more movement and has gusts of air from the attack, when destroying the wall there is more dust and debris, in ruby's last movement it is more fluid and feels more alive when falling with dust and wind from the height, and they show you how the bird that is still in that place and shows you how it breaks the ice to free itself, something that the original does not show, also the anime shows you each shot that ruby makes and that carries fire. The fanaticism for the original is very noticeable. If you don't understand something, sorry I don't speak English and this is with the translator.

Okay, I reviewed this over and over and here's the thing: both are doing things right but the new version is more active for lack of a better word. The reason the new version looks weird is because the nevermore is escaping the ice and changing elevation (it's trying to fly away/gain distance) which is why Weiss needed to give Ruby an extra lift. Compare that to the original where the nevermore was just hovering in place (it was practically waiting to get hit which looks silly and doesn't make sense). The momentum looks off in the new one because of the extra slope but I'm not sure they could have done anything about it without making Weiss just railgun ruby at the nevermore which would look far different from the original.

@@johannesh.9955 I watched it one more time and it shows Ruby changing from a landing posture to her floating across the extra ramp then shifting to prepare to hit the nevermore. The shift isn't too obvious and it doesn't really involve the feet. They could have given her a more dynamic pose but, at the same time, the extra ramp was too short to actually let Ruby do that and show it off properly. I'm thinking that they wanted to really retain the momentum from the original but with the change they had to account for, the best they could do was what I would call the "penguin sliding on ice" approach.

I only just got into watching these comparison videos because I have a lot of respect and interest in well-animated and choreographed fight scenes. I can see why people speak so highly of the original… but not in this scene in particular. The original looks especially clunky when Ruby is dragging the giant birdo all the way up, with the movement on the legs immediately taking me out of it because it doesn’t match the speed at which she’s moving. The anime meanwhile admittedly stalls a bit more than it should before Ruby digs her weapon in (and I have no idea why they added that, the timing in the original was great) but then the way she drags the bird all the way up is just way more stylish. I felt like nostalgia was just making a bunch of people blind to actual improvements but I think the entire fight scene before this moment is what showed me what everyone was talking about. This one moment alone isn’t that amazing, but when I looked at the entire fight scene as a whole I was blown away. The flow never stopped and they still managed to squeeze some character in there without breaking the pace of the fight scene… can’t hold it against the adaptation because they’re just different mediums with different tools at their disposal to convey a scene but wow. Look ill just say this...the original IMO is way better because they don't overstay with conversation...I just don't get why they couldn't just of reanimated it and maybe redone some of the lines but keep the really good parts the same such as the whole original interaction between Ruby and Weiss when they were about to finish the nevermore. They didn't overstay in the conversation and they weren't being all buddy buddy just working together because they had to. In the anime I think Weiss is being far too nice...she isn't the ice queen in the anime...and it makes me sad

@@sicko111dead8 not at all. The original for me is far better because of the dialog not the animation...hell if they just copy pasted the original dialog in I think this "anime" (because imo the original IS an anime) is far better. Also I like yo actually watch my shows not read them. So I will give it more of a chance once they have an English version out but until then I will pass for now...I think I will respectfully pass...I really do find it disappointing they made this rather than continuing the story with the next volume because I loved every volume they released like i watched every episode within an hour of its release and too keep it fresh in my mind for the first three volumes I watched each episode once a week..Also Salems original voice actress is the very person that plays Cortana in the Halo series my all time favorite game from childhood. So it's less a bias of 3d versus 2d and more of a bias of voice actors, and the words that are said...cause Weiss is nothing like how she was in the original volume 1 where she felt like a true ice queen...now she feels like a friend that sometimes is rude...I don't like that cause she is supposed to be the rich girl who is better than everyone yknow? I'd like to point out I'm not trying to hate but it's really hard for me to word things properly cause of certain things I just don't feel comfortable mentioning here. So if I've offended you in any way please say something and know I am sorry sir or madam

You do realise it's a recap not a remake. This is the main problem. Chibi reviews already fucked up saying it's a remake and it's clearly not. They legitimately put a whole 2hr volume into 1hr while adding content. If you wanted a play by play scene the same with added scenes then the criticism would be different. But the show never intended to be that.

48 seconds in and I noticed how slow the action frames of the anime are. This is a big pet peeve of mine especially in anime. And what is up with all the extra animation on useless things like hair movement at the end of the scene? Monty was a special animator and I'm lucky to have discovered him long before RWBY came out. Probably going to rewatch Dead Fantasy after this to get back to what made Monty great. Sadly there was too little of it in RWBY before he passed.

1:01 Crescent Rose is heavy its, why she lands like that. 1:09 wields it like it's nothing. Ruby's weapon works because shes play with her light weight in contrast to the scythe weight.Other scenes they nail it others like thus it bothers me. Just a nitpick. I still like the animation overall.
dang, as someone who has never watched an episode of RWBY (but have seen clips/trailers in the past and I'm a long time RT fan) I might get into it with the anime now... Monty did amazing work with 3D models, but was heavily limited by using mo-cap and being a fairly low budget studio. Choreography was his biggest strength, animation wise, but every fight clip that I watched just seemed the same to me. As they were tethered to providing actual hand-to-hand combat/choreography, I didn't see much superhuman maneuvers be implemented in fights (again, based on what little content I've seen) It was impressive, but not star-striking. The anime was able to capitalize on more liberties in this clip here and made that decapitation scene much more epic and dramatic hand-drawn and was stylized. You can really tell the difference in the animation quality spike after the decapitation, they really saved their budget for it to show that THIS was an important moment and it came out superb. CGI can't get away with doing what anime can do in terms of having still animation shots. characters HAVE to be moving in CGI, otherwise they'll look like props or get lost in the shot as they are made to be live-like. I think this is why a lot of people think it looks better animated out of the two versions, but its really because its a MUST-have trait for it. Anime (same thing with cartoons) can save their budget and not do this but still look good because its 2D and it isn't as jarring to have characters not move in their shots. But when they do like in OG Disney and Pixar 2D movies, the animation just cant be beat bro. Anyway, Idk why I felt like typing this long ass opinion of mine when I doubt anyone will read this. I think the anime looks a lot better than the 3D one based on visuals and animation EVEN with the still shots and "skippy" animation... I just thought my unbiased view would be an interesting addition to this conversation, but I feel that OG RWBY stans will drown out any differing opinions on this matter. Not to say that I think the anime version is better, I just think it looks more fluid and dramatic... >.>

@MissLilianae2 жыл бұрын
I think the Anime wins out for me for a lot of small details the OG missed. Big one: The glyphs Weiss provides to let Ruby run up the cliff aren't in the OG after they're shown being made. So when Ruby is running up the cliff it just looks like she's walking up it. It's the same walk cycle she uses when she's running earlier in the episode (and prior ones). There's also no sign of the glyphs. In the Anime Version it is SHOWN that Ruby is running faster than she normally would be able to as the glpyhs blur into one solid line as sprints up the cliff at the accelerated speed. Also it may be my eyes have adjusted to spotting details in blurred anime-scenes, but there are those saying that you can't see what's going on the Anime version. I disagree, I think the fact it has all that extra detail for you to take in makes it better since the OG just has Ruby running up a wall and firing her gun and dragging the near-still Nevermore up with her.
@Micharlus2 жыл бұрын
While I agree that running up the cliff part was totally better done in anime, I'd say that everything other fell off. 0:43 Ruby slowly levitating towards the wall. It's just... bad. Afterwards she hooks the Nevermore to the wall as if it was lighter than her. Blake and Weiss at 1:14 and 1:17 making me feel like I saw them already in 20 other random old animes. During Weiss and Ruby's talk the humour is completely lost. As well as Ruby's insecure nature. While Weiss' sarcastic princess isn't exactly original idea, it's still much richer than anime Ruby's "I want to prove to you that I am good enough!" completely overused trope and nothing else. Anime Weiss shows kind of older sister style and while it's not bad, I'm not sure how they're going to weave it into actual Weiss character or whether they're just remaking Weiss completely. To me original felt, well, original. Anime version feels just like they're throwing in every single popular theme they could find. Personally I don't put as much emphasis on the ideality of every scene and part. If I did I'd drop RWBY after first time seeing characters walk. xD There are a lot of budget cuts in less important animations that probably aren't present in anime. I guess that difference in priorities makes for a difference in our opinions.

@@Micharlus While I havent watched any RWBY aside from like 2-3 episodes, I find that there's this one thing to point out that I can see they did better. (I'm too lazy to point out others but there is a bunch more) The Nevermore was just hovering with no indication of being stuck (If it was at all and if it wasn't why was it just hovering watching ruby fly at it) at 0:37 in the original while the newer one we can actually see it flying upwards after it broke free. I am not an analyst at all but the fans in the comments seem to be just blindly ignoring the improvements imo. The humor part is something I miss from the original though I will say.
@Micharlus2 жыл бұрын
@@Imsoobroke, it was stuck by the tail as well. It was done in an earlier scene. And we could see it struggling to free itself there, although obviously in that slow, weird way that nevermore always gets animated. And you know, even in the anime it's not really doing anything when seeing someone fly at it. Especially since in the anime it has freed itself so it should have all the freedom of movement to react. But it just slowly raises up. So that's not really an improvement. About ignoring improvements, I dunno, I see tons of comments pointing that the dragging animation and effects were done well there and stuff. But when it comes to making a point everyone tends to prefer talking about positives of their point and negatives of the other part. But I wouldn't say it's very visible in these comments, most tend to give credit to both.

The anime felt a bit too sluggish for the high paced action it was trying to represent. The OG was fast, which was RWBY's bread and butter back in the day. They could use speed to their advantage like no other animation project. I'd compare this action scene in the anime to a scene from Attack on Titan. Sure, the visuals are stellar and they're all moving really fast, but the tempo gets kinda sucked out when conversation starts to dominate the scene. Less talking, more action is the way to go in RWBY. You can have talking scenes later.

But afterwards, her running up was very cool, and the animation quality on the hair on each RWBY was very cool. I think it's at a detriment, it takes away a lot of the charm the characters and show had and it makes Ruby look weak. In the anime she's basically begging for Weiss' approval when her character has always been about letting her actions speak for themselves. In the og she wasn't worried about Weiss not thinking she's good enough because she knew she was going to kill it and is was up to Weiss to not mess up. Weiss realizing she's competent after killing it would be a given so there was no need for Ruby to want her to know she can fight.
@frizen93282 жыл бұрын
@@edea_oblige I disagree. The anime takes away most of Ruby's charm and personality and actually makes her boring. In the og she isn't just a badass she has her own quirks and her personality is continually shown through all her dialogue and interactions. Anime Ruby is just stripped down to I want to be a huntress and for Weiss to like me. This interaction isn't more interesting or show their individuality as it is devoid of it. Ruby is simply fixated on Weiss' approval and Weiss acknowledges it. As opposed to the og with actual individuality and personality that has Ruby focused on the bird (she doesn't even look at Weiss until she tries to make a smug dramatic response to her question which also shows more of her own personality) and then gets confused about whether Weiss means yes or no. A humorous interaction that focuses on 2 characters personalities is replaced by a completely played straight "I want you to know I can do this," "I know you can" exchange.

The anime though, has a great flow and design, and the animation is excellent. Also having more characters' development through dialogues during their close ups, might not be liked by the strictly action fans that prefer less dialogue more action with a few punch lines, but for plot focused lovers, it's better. I guess they are both well done for their own kind.
