Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only hummingbirds that breed on the eastern coast of the North America. They weigh less than a slice of bread and will migrate across the Gulf of Mexico in less than a day. Hummingbirds in general are able to fly backwards and even upside down! Ruby-throated hummingbirds build tiny nests for their even tinier eggs. They may produce up to three broods in a single year! Also they have feet - some people think they don't, but they definitely do!
Scientific Name: Archilochus colubris
Range: Northern and Central America
Habitat: mostly forests and forest edges that provide enough food
Size: 0.1oz (2.8g) in weight; 4in (10cm) wingspan
Diet: nectar from tubular flowers as well as arthropods like mosquitoes and spiders
Predators: larger birds such as kite and kestrels, domestic cats, lizards, snakes, and nest invaders like blue jays, squirrels, and chipmunks
Life Cycle: females live longer - up to nine years

I’m in Indiana and spent my summer battling Leukemia, so I’m late getting my feeders out. Within the first day a female RTH showed up and now days later it’s become very territorial shooing off two others constantly. It’s hilarious. It stays perched on a tiny branch all day, with almost bloodshot eyes, waiting for another bird to come near it’s feeder! I’m going to put another feeder in the front yard.

I don't see Colorado on the map. I lived in Bailey, Colorado at 9,500 feet above sea level, and I got the ruby red-throated hummingbirds every year, also had the rufus (orange) hummingbird come around at the end of the season. They used to have fights at the feeders everyday. Probably had about 20-30 of them. They are so much fun to watch. A wonderful creation of God. Their flight capabilities are truly amazing. I have seen them do the dive that is around 60mph, and I've seen them out in a middle of a hail storm and severe lightening and it didn't even faze them. I have watched them fly even upside down. Such an amazing bird.

The females usually don't have the bright red throat, so that's how you can tell them apart. He might be chasing away everyone in that case!

Migratory information would be more helpful. What night time temperatures can humming birds tolerate? I am kind of thinking that when night time temperatures seem to stable, around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it may be time to put out the feeder.

I live in California. I have hummingbird feeders out and several have 3 throats. They are very aggressive and chase off others. Any tips on how to prevent this? We have several trees that they perch in. Cannot remove their stake outs.
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 4 жыл бұрын
Hummingbirds are just going to be this way naturally, however some tips I've heard are to add more feeders (especially during months of higher activity) and to space feeders out more (sometimes even making certain feeders out of the line of sight of other feeders). Sounds like a lively yard! Best of luck! 😊
