Ruby tries to get under Sandra's skin for the whole of the interview. Sandra lets it wash over her until 4:25 then turns the tables by setting a trap - "I understand you, I get you" - which Ruby stupidly falls into - "What do you get?" - thus enabling Sandra to take her to the cleaners: "Who the hell wants to be in England hosting a talk show?" She then completely dominates Ruby and doesn’t let her get another word in until Ruby hoists the white flag by terminating the interview. The fact that the audience whoops its approval of Sandra's revenge on Ruby's own show must have felt like a jug of iced water being emptied over Ruby's head.

I think it was mostly playful, but I will say that this is the least professional Ruby has ever been (she claims her Madonna interview was bad on her part but this eclipses it). And i'm glad Sandra was quick and intelligent enough to come and 'play'.

I dont feel as if Ruby is intentionally mean, she's just very ballsy and not afraid to ask the questions that viewers wanna know. she seems to have a deep fascination with people and I think that that can sometimes come across to people as "invasive" or "aggressive". she knows what it takes to be a good interviewer and that the last thing you wanna be seen as is boring. she no different than barbara walters. watch her other interviews and you will see she has an amazing talent for getting people to open up to her and getting a great interview out of them at the end of the day. which is what shes being paid to do.

Also if you see the abrupt way Ruby cut off the interview @ 5:03 - when she says "that reminds me" and talks about Grace Jones being next - you can see that was filmed later because her hair is different than @ 4:55 right after Sandra read her ass. I wonder if she ended the interview abruplty because she was butt hurt because Sandra humiliated her and later inserted the segway into Grace Jones all smiles just to save face on camera.

The comments are hilarious. For the uninitiated. This is how ruby's early shows were conducted (largely) with guests. To Mark herself out as distinct and different from other hosts on TV at the time. She'd often meet guests in advance. Build up a rapport with them prior and arrange these sort of mock hostile interviews. The guest would always come off the victor. The hostility isn't real. The premise and intonation of the interview was likely set up in advance. Ruby knew Sandra was a Great attack comic. Very sharp , deadpan with a very skillful acid tongue. She's drawing the best from Sandra and giving her a platform to demonstrate her strengths.

Nah, this was something totally different! You could tell by that final remark was like a silver stake through her heart when the audience applauded Sandra's comeback! Ruby hasn't had a single interview like this one! She cut Sandra off at the end, because she knew Sandra got to her! Sandra wasn't there to attack Ruby, you can tell by Sandra's body language and her carefree answering she just wanted to have fun, until Ruby made it a "I am better then you" show.

I love both of them but this is not Ruby’s best moment, and Sandra definitely outclasses her here. I think Ruby was trying to project her own insecurities onto Sandra, because she envied her self-confidence, and Sandra was having none of it. “Honey, I have fame.” When she finally has enough and reads her at the end, it’s game over. Even Ruby’s fans in the audience are on Sandra’s side. I’m sure Ruby would admit this wasn’t her finest moment. She’s grown a lot since then.

Back to her appearances on David Letterman in the 1980's, I always thought Bernhard on some level had a bitterness about her for not being an A-list talent or classic beauty and while she can be very entertaining, Sandra has often been mean and come across as arrogant. Ruby has since spoken of her distain for having to interview people she didn't like or respect and it's pretty obvious here that she didn't think much of Bernhard.

The sorry fact is that Ruby Wax isn't really funny... "I have my own show" - Well Sandra blasts her shows on Broadway, and when she did 3 nights at Royal Festival Hall in London '94 Ruby and Richard E Grant were right behind me. She didn't seem particularly amused, probably jealousy: Sandra incorporates everything in her life and shows: Humour, glamour, singing, dancing, fashion, pathos... was Ruby ever invited onto a Chanel runway?
