My first movement to contact humping my ruck and being the AG made me feel maybe I made a mistake in joining Light Infantry. In the 25th our machine gun team had only 2 soldiers. Carrying 600 rounds of belted 7.62 with the tripod and T&E mechanism and spare barrel added to the rest of my kit. I was 150 lbs. carrying over 100lbs of kit.

Long range rucking is nearly just as much mental as it is physical. You’re in your own head after the first 4-5 miles, and all you’ve got is your own thoughts to keep you taking that next step. Don’t give up, keep pushing.

@@pjl8017 It’s the brutal reality, and the truth needs to be available. Wait until you are in your fifties and have had both knees and both hips replaced, 20 years before your non-military cohort, you lose 2 inches of height from spinal degeneration, and you look back on all the miles you rucked, training with insanely heavy gear for a combat that never actually happened. In every other workplace this would be considered an unnecessary risk. It’s not right or wrong, it’s just the nature of a military career. Don’t believe me ? go to any veterans hospital and ask if you can visit the orthopaedic ward. Have a chat to all those old men and ask them to tell you about why they are in the orthopaedic ward.

I can attest to this. In USMC boot camp we had a power lifter talking shit until the first big martch. Same with the dude who was a XC runner in high school, or basically everyone else except me and two others. We had joined on an early contract at the beginning of our high school senior year. That gave us 12 months to train with our recruiter. Once a month until the last 3 months before boot camp when we moved to two times we would ruck. We started out easy at 10mi. The last one before leaving for boot was 40mi. We all could pass the pt test with awesome scores too. I thought my drill would be pissed once when I finished pretty quick. So I turned around and ran half way back through the ruck course. I was assigned to help Pvt Estelle get through boot camp. So once mh time was recorded I did not ask permission. I just ran back and started to running beside him singing a marching song to put his mind elsewhere, give him a rhythm, show him someone cared if he became a Mariner and motivate him. He did graduate when no one thought he would. In Desert Storm he saved the lives of his squad when the LAV they were in was hit by a tank round. Those lives saved in a small part came from our drill instructor not giving up on Estelle. Instead of saying oh well and letting him fa short and not making graduation he paired him up with me. He saw Estelle 's desire to be a Marine. Saw his love for his country and paired him with someone that had an innate skill to teach under extreme pressure. I was to teach him the skills and knowledge he was missing. We made sure he would become a Marine because his dedication and love for the USMC ultimately made him a better Marine than myself or the drill instructor. 😉

Ah, my knees and feet "fondly" remember those days. It was those days where their normal function departed my body. I used to go through music albums in my head to keep my mind occupied. Went through both Linkin Park albums (Hybrid Theory and Meteora at the time, 2005) and Papa Roach's Infest. I'd listened to those albums enough time to have nearly memorized every word and beat. I do NOT miss rucking. I was in a Sapper Co. from the 20th EN BDE, XVIII Airborne, special detachment to the 10th Mountain Division, in upstate NY at the tail-end of the Adirondack mountains. Every Wednesday was Ruck day, with the first Wed of the month being an easy 5k, then 8k, then 10k and ending each month with a 12k graded by Air Assault standards. Having experienced a crush injury to my right foot in my teenage years, i gotta say you are DEAD ON about rucking exposing your weaknesses. I have been running and walking with a ruck sack since I was 10. Rucked 15 miles to school and back for 8 years. Then went into the army and was top. Had both knees totally rebuild after accident and been walking 8 miles a day 5 days a week with a ruck and I am good again.

That’s why no one can simply enlist directly into MARSOC aka “Marine Raiders!” Raider battalions mostly take applicants from Marine Force Recon and/or a Marine has to have served at least a minimum of 4 to 6 years prior to even trying out for MARSOC

Your 'previous injury' comment hit home. Shattered my ankle in 2013 and rucking gets to me pretty bad. Always make it. Just don't feel well afterwards. You're 100% correct though, you need to condition for it. Calisthenics has been my savior in the Army. It makes me well rounded and nothing special.

Delta force does a 40 mile ruck with a 70 lbs ruck over rough steep terrain and the time frame to do it in is a secret for their selection. So that would expose most if not all special forces weaknesses when it comes to rucking because very few can do that. "It's not the best guy the gets selected but the Right guy."

Hey guys here's something the recruiters lack to mention: If you enlist op40 (ranger batt) as any soft MOS you'll be in Co-ed Basic *and* AIT. *ALSO* coed classes DO NOT have any more a single 35lb ruck at the end of the 3rd FTX, and AIT Cadre refused to allow rucking and gym time under the fear of the soldier not being able to compete the AIT of a MOS thats "in dire need" for bodies.

I joined In 2016 with a op40 as a 42A, and pretty much same. Tbh I had already lost feeling in my left foot and started having some knee instability after airborne school, and decided that breaking my body to prove my worth wasn't for me.

If you are rucking for time, take my advice, as i am one of the fastest haha--do NOT walk it! RUN and don't stop!! If you walk, all that weight will just be there, and will only be on your back longer than if you run it. And running, you will find your rhythm and Airborne shuffle your way to the finish line! And remember, stay Airborne! And have an Airborne All The Way day!! Drink water!

I personally wanted to thank you for putting this information out and in the extremely easy format for everybody to grasp because every soldier needs to be able to ruck. As an example I was a sergeant major with 27 years of service and was deployed Afghanistan. I was very fortunate to have been in a program where we incorporated ruck marches into our physical fitness program.

The ruck marches always weeded out the weak. There would be skinny soldiers that could max the pt test. But when it came to rucking they would be the last. Many could barely make the 12 mile. 3 hrs Thats the bare minimum.

I loved rucking while I was in the Army. Ruck march pt days where my favorite. But, when we did a twenty mile ruck march it definitely exposed every weak point I had. And we trained weekly up to the 20 mile march. So I was conditioned and I was done. We ran out of water in the woods sometime during and I swear I urinated yellow syrup. I called the ruck sake “The Tick” cause as soon as you put it on it starts sucking the life out of you.

There is a lot that you can do to help you with rucking. Some things that I do that help me excel: - have very broke in boots -every pound extra you have in your ruck counts for long distances -take “Gu’s’ to last the entirety of the ruck -you can cut out the double sewn portions of your uniform if you sweat a lot to help keep your body temp a little lower -keep your weight dense and as high as possible in your ruck(I fill a box with bubble wrap then put my weight on top of that) - keep your ruck straps tight so your load does not move around and tight to your body but adjust temporarily to allow some relief to your back. Some of these won’t apply depending on your situation but they are things I have learned by rucking a lot, hope it can help someone else

In the UK it’s called a TAB (tactical advance to battle) and our royal marine commandos do a 30 miler as part of there entrance against the clock (8 hours )with 40 lb of kit across rough terrain and roads and streams! Falklands War After disembarking from ships at San Carlos on East Falkland, on 21 May 1982, Royal Marines and members of the Parachute Regiment (tabbed) with their equipment across the islands, covering 56 miles (90 km) in three days carrying 80-pound , to then fight heavily outnumbered by Argentines!

The toughest workout I've ever done. While I've been spent (i.e., barfed, fainted, etc.) with other training modalities, this is the first time I've ever trained to where I've actually injured myself, over time (instead of getting beaten up, fallen off of stuff, etc.). As from personal experience, I would suggest a combination of weight training, and a gradual progression with regard to rucking distances, pace, and the amount of weight carried. Nutrition and rest (sleep) are incredibly important training factors, if one is endeavoring to pursue rucking as a recreational training modality.
