To anyone who carried this thing: you have my respect. I used my dad's old pattern 82 rucksack when I first got into ruck marching. I loaded it with steel weights, 70 pounds. This ruck has no sternum strap, the waist belt is just unpadded webbing and when you tighten the shoulder straps the bare straps will dig into you under the arms. I did 10km during the winter with 70lbs twice a week and yea, I salute you if you carried this in the army!

@redriverscout44047 жыл бұрын
Canada is not Florida. You leave stuff like your sleeping bag behind and the enemy just has to wait 24 hours and then loot the human popsicles. Unlike in the US our kit is not designed primarily for invading other countries either. Like most European armies a lot of our gear is designed to fight a defensive action on your own turf.
@redriverscout44047 жыл бұрын
Also what you describe (ammo, water and bare essentials) is what your LBE is for not your ruck. The original manuals for the 82 pattern stuff is online and it was never intended that you would be fighting with a ruck on your back.

the valise straps are not too short; they were designed to secure just the valise; not the valise and the thermarest pad. Back in the day, the black betty mattress was packed to a square and stowed in the bottom of the valise. This left plenty of strap to secure the valise.

Individual items should be packed in separate plastic bags, some items can even be vacuum packed. Having crossed many rivers, streams, lakes, lochs and even at sea, i can say 1000% better to waterproof individually. Carry spare plastic bags too. One trash bag is NOT enough. When it comes to water and sand they get in everywhere. The residual air in some bags can also add to buoyancy when doing a river crossing using poncho as raft. Although mostly military I have had to cross water at other times in a non military situation.

I can guarantee that this cheap trash bag is not going to keep the gear dry. They should use either a heavy duty 3 mil white garden bag. It’s though, will keep the gear dried and it’s easier to find stuff at night with a red light. Try to find your stuff at night in a black trash bag.

Tip #1- ditch the 82 pat POS ruck and get something decent. Don't take a bunch of unneeded crap like melmac plate and cup. There should be a canteen cup at bottom of canteen. No need for second shirt or trousers. Socks good, less underwear. Long johns not needed if warm enviro. Unless going to the arctic, ditch the hood and one of the sleeping bags. I see he had a fleece toque - wear that to bed. The early 90s Canadian attempt at the poncho liner was crap: too heavy and bulky. I swear that thing was essentially an old wool blanket sewn into left over rain suit nylon. Rubbish. The better CADPAT one didn't come out for a while so do like we all did - buy US Army poncho liner at their PX, used at surplus store or order via a catalogue. Speaking of which, where is this OCdt sleeping? I don't see any string etc for making a shelter so I assume he'll be in a mod tent with his buddies. In that case, no need for a shelter half or even the bivvy bag - those are for real soldiers. For that matter, he doesn't even need a poncho liner. Ablution kit is unnecessarily bulky. Don't use full-size towel - not going to lay on the beach. The hand towel is sufficient. The horrendously heavy and bulky angle head flashlight? You kidding me? The narrator makes an error when he says "you put the air mattress in the 'stuff sack' with the sleeping bag". He must have been reading from an old script from when we still used the black 'rubber lady' inflatable air mattress. It's inefficient to stuff the thermarest in the valise. He seems smart enough to pack the valise in reverse order - you don't want to have to haul out the sleeping bag to get at shelter making stuff - especially in the rain. The valise needs to be cinched tighter. Compress with knee and cinch the string progressively - like lacing a boot. The opposite D rings should touch each other. Admittedly hard to do with so much extra crap like the outer sleeping bag etc. The end drawstring needs to be cinched tighter so that the white label isn't visible. The sliding tensioners on the drawstrings are notorious for loosening. Once tightened, tie a quick release slip knot in the string which prevents loosening. The valise straps on the ruck are backwards. The running end should be brought up from the bottom and fed into the buckle at the top. This way, straps can be cinched by pulling them down, toward the user. Easier to strap thermarest on outside of valise instead of between it and the frame. Note the thermarest cover has a row of 'anchor points' like molle straps. Best to pass cargo straps through the loops to prevent thermarest suddenly popping out of the side or shifting position. Many find it easier to secure thermarest under the top flap or securing it longitudinally on outside of main bag via extra straps or bungies. Rations. Must be stripped of unwanted items or those not needed. This will save half the bulk and weight. The OCdt packer was smart enough in the vid to pierce the bag and force the air out of one of the meals that was being stubborn. Stripped rats then can go in the outer pouches.
@romeo66962 жыл бұрын
Then snap the buckle from over packing the ruck and spend a day trying to get a new pack and putting it together again. Only to be given an even worse pack from supply that is sure to fail even quicker. I don't see the crate of ammo and jerry can they hand you and say put this in your ruck after it's full in this vid. Now picture yourself doing this -50 in a snow drift.

@redriverscout44047 жыл бұрын
It actually is not a bad idea. It is cheaper and do you really need a custom made liner? I mean it is not a high end camping trip. Plus one cool trick with using plastic bags (I have seen it demonstrated with an ALICE pack) is you can use them for buoyancy so your ruck will actually float if you need to cross a river. Every bag liner I have seen would be kind of useless for that. That being said if you really want a ruck with a bag liner there is a company that makes a 64 pattern ruck that has a bag liner.

Mind you I did get to have the Meaford experience before my hopeful career in the forces went down the shitter. But yeah, I don't see the problem with using a garbage bag as a liner to be honest. Maybe I'm old fashion in saying this but if it works, it works and I'll use it. (or it could just be that I'm too lazy to make the trip up to the Dennison stores to get one, if they even give them out there. No idea. lol)
