This happened to me on Crystal the other day. Needless to say, you need more than 2 Great Balls to catch a Heracross. The only completely random shiny I've ever found myself in all 10 years I've been playing Pokémon - and I was somehow short on Great Balls. And I found it at night, too, so it wasn't asleep. Incidentally, why do Great Balls suck so much in Gen 2? You practically can't catch anything when you finally have them. They're amazing in Gen 3.
