I was asking myself the same thing... well Mate can totally pull it off wearing a dress... I guess it is to symbolize Deaths character as not being human... since he does not have a gender... or so...

@@cottoncandy1860 it is because the dress symbolises Marz Vetsera, who was the women who did the suicide with Rudolf in Mayerling. It is a really beautiful detail I think even though it is a bit sad if you know the complete story behind them...

I think it is both... like they are all death since death isn't human... so Mate might be the front man as a hint of longing for death... the only thing humans can actually feel...but they are all death since when actually someone or something dies death is all around, absorbing and carrying it...

I'm positive they are all supposed to be delusions of Mary Vesta(being all dressed the same and with blonde wigs, and all) until we get to the "real" Mary Vesta who is portrayed by Death himself.

He is cross-dressing because it refers to Marz Vetsera in this scene. Mary was Rudolfs love when he killed himself (well in fact he first shot Mary and then himself)

Ich weiß jetzt warum er ein Kleid anhat und warum noch die anderen da sind die den die Pistole nehmen Unzwar rudolf ist mit seiner Geliebten gestorben und er hat die ganze zeit jemanden gesucht der mit ihm stirbt es war dann aber so das der Tod dann seine Geliebte sein soll und die Frau hat erst ihn umgebracht und dann sollte sie sich auch umbringen aber sie hat es nicht gemacht weil sie lieber leben wollte und dann ist der Tod ja auch weggegangen
