There should be a mechanism to ensure the pardon is beyond reproach - that the president, his family, friends, cronies etc, do not benefit. Today this is a voluntary thing. (Recall when Dubya revoked a pardon in 2008, when it was discovered the pardonee's father had donated to the GOP. High bar. Good times.) Blanket pardons could have a place, eg. "forgive all Vietnam draft dodgers" was beyond reproach.

Well, if the Senate hadn't sat on H.R. 5314, the "Protecting Our Democracy Act", in 2021 after it passed the House, we might have gotten somewhere. It would have created a prohibition on self pardons, required disclosure to Congress of details about certain pardons, added a suspension of statute of limitations while in office, and fixed many other things Trump is known to have abused. But they never even assigned it to a committee in the Senate. Charles Schumer decided to be useless instead.

Careful. Pardons are a tool for good OR evil. Banning them outright because of potential misuse could prevent them from doing real good. Placing some level of checks and balances on it, though, would be great, to prevent ridiculous situations like this where a president can just pardon all his criminal buddies. Likewise the lifetime appointment of Supreme Court Justices is useful for preventing posturing for reelection bids. "My time's about to expire, so I'll do whatever I need to in the moment to get back in or to make a splash before I go" is not a mindset we want to facilitate in people that high up the rung. But again, there needs to be some balance to prevent a toxic element from lasting for decades and causing who knows how much long-term damage to this country with their very partial rulings. Basically, yes, let's get some sweeping changes in here to clean up our laughably corrupt and easily abusable system of government...but let's also be VERY careful not to throw out the baby with the toxic sludge. We do need to keep the good ideas in as well.
