Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees
This Song Reached #6 On US Music Charts In 1934.
This Is The Laughing Version.
Rudy Vallée (July 28, 1901 -- July 3, 1986) was an American singer, actor, bandleader, and entertainer.
One of his record hits was "The Drunkard Song," popularly known as "There Is a Tavern in the Town." Vallée couldn't stop laughing during the first take, and managed a second take reasonably well. The "laughing" version was so infectious, however, that Victor released both takes. Song Written by William H. Hills.
Victor released two versions of this song. A "straight" version and one in which Rudy Valee cracks up laughing. The Laughing version was an instant hit.
There is a Tavern in the Town
Lyrics:
There is a tavern in the town, in the town
And there my true love sits him down, sits him down,
And drinks his wine as merry as can be,
And never, never thinks of me.
cho: Fare thee well, for I must leave thee,
Do not let this parting grieve thee,
And remember that the best of friends
Must part, must part.
Adieu, adieu kind friends, yes, adieu
I can no longer stay with you, stay with you,
I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree,
And may the world go well with thee.
He left me for a damsel dark, damsel dark,
Each Friday night they used to spark,
Used to spark,
And now my love who once was true to me
Takes this dark damsel on his knee.
And now I see him nevermore, nevermore;
He never knocks upon my door, on my door;
Oh, woe is me; he pinned a little note,
And these were all the words he wrote:
Oh, dig my grave both wide and deep, wide and deep;
Put tombstones at my head and feet, head and feet
And on my breast you may carve a turtle dove,
To signify I died of love.

OMG, I haven't thought of this song in 50 years. When I was a kid in the '60s my dad gave me a ukulele for Christmas and taught me the songs he knew from his days in WWII. I still remember every word and every stanza of this song. I had no idea that Rudy sang it, though. Very nice memory. My dad would have turned 97 this month.

In an interview on the Dr. Demento Show, he said that he is a grammar purist and realized there was an error in grammar in the song which caused him to laugh. In those days, the recording was done on a wax cylinder that had to be taken from an oven at the precise temperature. After the fourth take they told him if he laughed, that is how it was going to be released.
@BillyDBunny
@BillyDBunny 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelachhammer9600 Good to hear from you, Sir. I am a big fan of Dr. Demento, he really made my teen years interesting. I do not believe for one second that this was recorded on a wax cylinder, the very last Edison recordings on such media were ended in November 1929. In addition cylinders could not be stamped out, they were yesterday's technology by 1934. As always, if you have info to the contrary I humbly beg for... re-education!
@GoldwaterB
@GoldwaterB 3 жыл бұрын
@@BillyDBunny You are dead correct. Edison lost the battle of his cylinders vs. Berliner's flat disc, which lasted way longer than it should have because of his pride and stubborness, imo. "Cylinders could not be stamped out" -- literally, yes, whereas flat discs were easily stamped out from a mold. Did you mean figuratively, i.e., rendered obsolete?

I never heard it on a record, my Dad used to sing to my and my sister in the 60's, he was so funny, this and the Mountain County Jail song which I can't find but I did get him singing it on our way Easter dinner a few years before he passed away. What a fun song. If I could remember how it starts I could remember most of it. He also sang Old Dan Tucker songs.

My grandmother was born in 1905 in Alabama. I remember her saying, that Rudy Vallee was the big heart throb pop singer for her generation, like Frank Sinatra or Elvis would be later. Listening to him, I think, that he influenced Nat King Cole's style of singing. Fun fact: Rudy Vallee was actually from Canada, but he still made something of himself!

He was Canadian and retains elements of a British accent which was typical of Canadian speech at that time. But the other thing is that children in that period and most performers, whether actors or singers, would have had elocution lessons to teach them to pronounce clearly and correctly. You can hear this a lot in the classic US films of the 30s and 40s where many of the lead actors speak rather like this.
@Chapin-pc2kz
@Chapin-pc2kz Жыл бұрын
@@saborflamenco1137 This was a put-on. Rudy Vallee did not sound like this in real life. He had a standard American accent. Just watch his interviews and films/TV appearances. It was mainly pretentious actors/broadcasters who adopted that phony Mid-Atlantic accent. Also, he was not Canadian. He was born in Vermont but grew up in Maine and is buried in his hometown there. His paternal grandparents were French-Canadian, though. His mother was of Irish-English descent.

The score was 6 to nothing the mosquitoes was ahead, the bed bugs knocked a homerun and they knocked me out of bed. (at easter he stopped here and I said keep going, he said where was I and I said you got knocked out of bed by the bedbugs, he turned, looked at me and said "I didn't get knocked out of bed" and laughed. lol ) I got up for breakfast and guess what I had. The coffee tastes like backker juice and old stale bread. they give you a little bit of cheese and boy did it smell and that's the way they treat you in the mountain county jail! Wally Cox used to sing this song. Listen to here it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baOZdYqjbbqZjas It starts about 2:58. Now, that you've heard this, check out the lifelong relationship between Wally Cox and Marlon Brando. And before you call me anti-LGTBQ I want to say, no one should be afraid to show who they are and hide their love. I have a great respect for both men.

So this is a song about a man losing his true love, another man, to a dark damsel? How did I not know this?

No. It's sung from the perspective of the girl, not the man.

@@lindseyya2677 Listen to the lyrics. Also, the song is about a woman who loses her man to heavy drinking and kills herself. 'Damsel dark' is not to be taken literally. 🎶There is a tavern in the town (in the town ) And there my true love sits him down (sits him down) And drinks his wine as merry as can be And never, never thinks of me Fare-thee-well for I must leave thee Do not let the parting grieve thee Oh, the time has come for you and I to say goodbye Adieu, adieu kind friends, adieu (yes, adieu) I can no longer stay with you (stay with you ) Oh-ho, I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree Fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well He left me for a damsel dark (damsel dark) Each Friday night they used to spark (used to spark) And now my love who once was true to me Takes that dark damsel on his knee Fare-thee-well for I must leave thee Do not let the parting grieve thee Oh, the time has come for you and I to say goodbye Adieu, adieu kind friends, adieu (yes, adieu) Oh, I can no longer stay with you (stay with you) Oh-ho, I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree Fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well And now I see him nevermore (nevermore) He never, never knocks upon my door (upon my door) Oh-ho, woe is me; he penned a little note I'll read to you the words he wrote Fare-thee-well for I must leave thee Do not let the parting grieve thee Oh, the time has come for you and I to say goodbye Adieu, adieu kind friends, adieu (yes, adieu) Oh, I can no longer stay with you (stay with you ) Oh-ho, I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree Fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well Oh, dig my grave both wide and deep (wide and deep) Put tombstones at my head and feet (head and feet ) And on my breast just carve a turtle dove To signify I died for love Fare-thee-well for I must leave thee Do not let the parting grieve thee Oh, the time has come for you and I to say goodbye Adieu, kind friends, adieu (yes, adieu) I can no longer stay with you (stay with you) Oh-ho, I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree Fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well🎶
