Rudy, don't you have a air hammer? I used an air hammer to get the pinion out when there was a bearing failure.

No air hammer hits as had as he was swinging that sledge. Maybe a constuction jackhammer lol.
@billbillinger24912 күн бұрын
@@timothycarey3883 The air hammer supplies rapid, smaller hits... providing vibration. The rapid vibration works the 'stuck' components free of each other, with less chance of damage to the part being 'hammered'. Cheers.🍻

Not surprising that the pinion bearing was toast, while the ring gear seemed fine. Let’s say you have 5.13 gears, the pinion side will spin 5.13 revolutions to turn the ring gear once. So it saw 5X the revolutions and heat.

I just did the same thing and the same rear end the other day for a customer, I had to put heat on it for over 35 minutes while my buddy spun the pinion, couldn't get it out I used a punch tip for my air hammer, and finally got it. The customer tried doing the gear set and bearings himself and didn't put shims back or anything made it 4 miles and destroyed everything lol.

Merry Christmas, Rudy and Janelle. Hey man. I'm sure you're told more times than not, but please please please wear safety glasses especially when hitting a punch. @offroad63092 күн бұрын
Agree. I also know he has a dad that made fun of people telling him the same thing. That was his training. Hopefully he will rise above it. I must have missed something. Thought the front end burned up because they didn't put gear oil in but then they drained gear oil out? BTW, tapered roller bearings not needle bearings.

If you couldn't find any gear lube for the front end, then what was the oil that drained out of the diff when you took the cover off?
@leveluplife85852 күн бұрын
Atf or motor oil will lubricate differentials in a pinch. They WILL get hot even unlocked and floating so absolutely can never be ran dry or this exact scenario will happen. You probably had the hubs fully unlocked
@mnvjim79002 күн бұрын
I had a customer driver without oil after they hit a rock in the cover. Had to pull out the whole axel and put it in a press to get the pinion out. Completely welded to the bearing. Had to put relief cuts in it and everything… big pain in the ass
