The ORW is going to need some semi truck components to keep from breaking with all the torque and enormous tires

Or some kind of slip or fuse link component to limit the peak torque spikes that are causing these breakages. Non-trivial engineering but I suspect the team is up to it.

Better here where it doesn't actually matter, than 1) during the Off Road Wrecker Games, or 2) while deep in Sand Hollow or worse, rescuing a customer rig. More witnesses to laugh here, but also so much support so close too.

Your dad is trying to make one ton components work on a five ton truck. He need to think about using a bigger sized drive train. A six speed Allison transmission and transfer case would solve the issue with the snapping of the output shafts. No need for custom made components when the parts are already on the shelf. His wrecker has two things that are causing the shaft breakage. The size of the tires and the weight of the unit are both increasing the torque on the shafts. What he has installed can not take the strain and needs to be upsized to match the weight and torque required to turn the wheels

I think it really needs a way bigger t/case, those tiny D300 based t/cases wouldn't hod up to the weight and big and heavy tires of the wrecker, plus the low range reduction, those output shafts are getting pretty worked out

@jeepindave5464
@jeepindave5464 Жыл бұрын
Well they are using a stock np205 which is a 1 ton case. The midnight metal works dana 300 cases you are referring too are sweet, but Matt has the much Beefier monster 205. It had issues since its still a prototype. Rory brought Matt a stock case to make drive. So considering it did well for the beast this is. The problem he is breaking the shaft on the carrier bearing slip yoke like toothpicks. Which looks like a 35 spline shaft. I would have thought the gear reduction hubs on the axletech 4000s would have lessened the torque shock on the drivetrain.
@jesseleesamples
@jesseleesamples Жыл бұрын
Isn’t the current t-case just a temporary one to get it to the event? I assume the other one has stronger outputs. Maybe some bigger splined shafts or some chromoly ones could keep those from breaking. I’m sure they’ll figure it out though, a new rig built from the ground up is bound to have some growing pains.

@@jeepindave5464 For the use the Wrecker will have i would go with a 2 1/2 transfer case if they were compact enough to fit between the frame rails and if it has around 4:1 reduction which i don't think they have, that together with some driveshafts with huge u-joints (1550 size) so they can be long term reliable and they don't need to replace them after every single rescue, in the video the Wrecker just did a small bounce and it broke, that's way too weak for this particular truck and it's intented use

About The Wrecker Games. Just a suggestion that I think would be a good idea, and that is to share the community blessings with the area of each of the wrecker drivers home area, by having the games at their place of operations then move to the next the following year. It is just my idea but you folks can have it, Run with it, Keep having fun Wheeling, Towing, Flipping, Dragging, and Filming.

I like the way Hollies Jeep is painted with those Jaws and Teeth on the side. It looks like a great build all around. Just working out the bugs. Gotta insulate thouse electricals, but you can't predict every problem with custom designs. It's gonna only get more reliable from here. Same with Matt's build. Get back on that horse and keep ridin. Hey Rudy hello from Alaska, hey I have a suggestion for Matt, about him breaking his output shafts, he need to transfer the load distribution of the drive lines ie the torque coefficients towards the axles, he can do this by lowering the pumpkins gear ratios. This will transfer the load of the drive lines the the axles instead of at the transfer case where the load is dangerous ie breaking shafts

Just thinking of the driveline failures: So engine has 400-500 ft-lbs right off idle times approx 2.x torque converter multiplication at stall times 2.52 1st gear ratio times 2x or 4x 4WD low (not sure or transfer case gear ratio) equals 5,000 - 10,000 ft-lbs of torque in the driveline. Maybe take one of the broken splined pieces and mount it to fixed object, then attach a 10 foot long pipe and keep adding weight, maybe 1000 pounds or more until remaining splined shaft breaks. Might be EPIC. Might show just how much static torque it takes to break things.
@TD_YT066

What I was thinking.. maybe they need to raise the diff ratios to reduce the driveline torque, let the axles, wheels and tires take the hit.
