If they got through without a violent stop (indicating cylinders full of water) they're probably fine. The steam is just the wet air filter drying as air is pulled through the intake. USA here, I live on a road that floods frequently during the spring and fall when it's rainiest time of year. I see people fail at crossing the river all the time. The best advice is to slow down and keep the bow wave from crashing over your hood. Having a higher profile vehicle helps. The ford at 8:37 does a great job at this. Even though he had a small car he was able to cross just fine. Even when higher profile vehicles have failed. I typically cross water that has been high as my bottom seat cushion with nothing more than a stock air box. Just push the wave of water at a slow speed. Getting waterproof door speaks is a big plus. I got tired of replacing mine. Marine grade speakers will take the abuse. I can only imagine how much water damage repairs must cost.

These videos make for an interesting study into human behaviour. I presume most of the these drivers have seen these popular videos by now. Either people want to have their 15 seconds of fame or their judgement of probabilities are very poor. The 15 seconds of fame has little upside and large downside - i.e your car could break down and it would cost a lot of money to fix, as well as the large inconvenience of not having a car. The risk of failure increases with the type of car and water level. Most 4x4s make it at any height of water, anything else that is a car or even a van has a large probability of not making it. Which begs the question why take the risk in anything but a 4x4 or tractor? Anyway - keep doing the "Rufford Ford Challenge" people - you'll be famous on tiktok one day!

People wonder 🤔 why there's so many parked up cars on the side road...... because they all are knackered from the water 🌊 splash! 🤣🤣

Watched these videos over the last year or so and always wondered? Is there no other routes that avoid the water crossing? Is it like a days drive further up stream?

As of Google Maps detour is about a 5min extra. I guess it is worth a completely scrapped car...

@@neptuneblood6916 An Escort van, the air intake is exposed just under the bonnet, there was a slurping sound then a bang, the recovery driver turned up lifted the bonnet and sucked his teeth, you know, the way people do when breaking bad and expressive news, I've avoided water ever since.

Don’t let it go over your bonnet unless you have a snorkel. I wonder how many engines have been killed by hydro locking…

Has anyone thought of turning their car around and reversing across the ford instead ? Meaning less bow wave and your cars engine may have less water being forced into the intake of the engine causing hydraulicing action meaning bent conrods and other nasties.
@NVMDSTEvil3 жыл бұрын
Bow wave isnt really the problem. The air intake point location can suck water even with no wave on many modern cars unfortunately.
@charlesschulz84163 жыл бұрын
@@NVMDSTEvil that's a good point but if people used some common sense like find alternative route

In one of these videos someone did end up doing that and they were fine. They were in a lifted offroad looking vehicle though.
@philwildcroft17643 жыл бұрын
@@tonythatorc971 I've seen a couple of people in small cars do it successfully as well. Not foolproof but definitely avoids the wave breaking over the bonnet.
