Hi Jon, I maybe have a explanation for the cheek thing. I read about it in Malte Burba's Brass Master Class. (In my opinion a must read for every brass player). In most languages most vowels with a high tongue position are coarticulated with spread lips, while vowels with a low tongue position are coarticulated with more rounded lips. This appears while playing when while ascending people start smiling and pulling their cheek muscles, even though the effect on range is minimal. Malte's idea is that with a more ideal tongue position, air pressure won't even really hit the cheeks, so using these muscles will become unnecessary over time. I always have to think of Dizzy, and how he used to play really high with completely relaxed cheeks! He only seemed to contract his ring muscle and the supporting muscles in the corners, plus his chin muscle. Cheers!
