Thanks guys! The leadpipe buzzing is something I will start doing. I find it difficult now, in the beginning.

Great set of videos Rufftips, I look at the Javier interview a couple of dozen times, and you asked all the questions I wanted to know. What I have notice when I play on the lead pipe, to get the A (the hard one on the break) it seems to make no difference between the beginning of my practice and the end when I'm tired. Could this mean I'm playing on the lead pipe with one technique and playing on an other?

+MiloTech This is possible. The micro adjustments we make to obtain a scale in the lower mid register on the leadpipe are the tools that help get us through the break on the horn in the upper register. On one of my horns I have a very high Bb above high C. I work on lowering that note by playing arpeggios or chord studies. This helps me hear the note where it should be. When it is in my inner ear it is way better in tune. I am able to relax and the note becomes much easier to play. I honestly think it is a combination of attacking the break with every approach you can think of. Oh one more crazy idea. Try one heavy bottom cap on the 3rd valve. This might change the slotting just enough to help center the note. Good luck. Best, Jon

+Rufftips Thought I would chime in with my progress, I'm blowing through the whole concert Eb scale on the leadpipe its making everything super easy with the tuning slide in. I can literally gliss a whole octave from F to F without any half valves. Excellent. I keep coming back to these videos, my next is trying the G on top of the staff. Thanks RuffTips.

Ah cool to see Mr. Gonzalez again - had originally seen him maybe a year or so ago on Bill Bing's channel. Nice interview!

is there anyway to do this on flugelhorn?

Try it and see if it works or helps. Best, Jon

Hi Rufftips I'm a high school trumpet players and I tried the lead pipe practice but it's just so hard to play a concert e flat scale on it. I can only get down from F on the top of the staff to around C. If I keep bending down I will just get an F or simply no sound, as Gonzalez mentioned in the video. So what should I do?

Try pulling the horn away from your mouth slightly. This may let a small bit of air escape but you should start to get results. The better it becomes the less you will need to do this. Best, Jon

Here's something you can try. Get a copy of "Special Studies" by John Daniel. Go to the section on lip bends which extend chromatically downward and upward. Read the text carefully and follow directions as written. Over time, the flexbility of your aperture will increase along with embouchure strength. Both are required in playing a concert Eb scale on the leadpipe only (the embouchure needs to be strong enough to hold the aperture in place which must be flexible enough to change pitch as you go up and down). For me, I tried doing the leadpipe scale a long time ago and failed miserably. I did the Daniel studies for months and didn't touch the leadpipe a single time the whole time. I watched Javier demonstrated the scale above and was wondering if I could now do it. So I removed by tuning slide and was able to play a decent F scale! Hope that helps.

The tongue movements are related to embouchure effort, it has NOTHING to do with air speed.

Man, Javi makes that leadpipe exercise look so easy. It. Is. Not!
