If one wants to make a 6 ' x 9' rug, how do you get backing that you don't have to piece together for that size since most backing is 60" wide?
@rughooking4 жыл бұрын
I now sell 75" wide rug warp. Since what you want to hook is 72", you would have to sew on excess fabric at the edges to make the backing sit comfortably on your frame. To accomodate the 9' length, buy 4 yards (I sell the rug warp in full yard increments.)

Is it true that rug weave is best for #5 cut or under? I think my strips might be a bit bigger, should I still use rug weave?
@rughooking5 ай бұрын
If you meant rug warp, you can hook any size in that. Often the people who are quoting that you can only hook up to a 5 have never tried the other cuts. I use up to a #9. I don't often use 8.5 or 9, my favorite cut size is a #7. That hooks nicely in rug warp.

I don't recommend them. They are stiffer fabrics than wool and absorbent which means they get dirty quicker. Wool rugs just shrug off the dirt. They never seem to get dirty.

I'm just getting started and I'm researching supplies (cheaply) Where can I get grippers? I can have my husband make me a stand much cheaper than buying one but I'd need grippers. Also, do I have to use wool or can I use cheaper fibers? Wool is expensive and I hate to put a lot of money into a new venture if I'm not sure I'll like it or not. Thanks!

On Amy Oxford channel you'll find full information!

@rughooking3 жыл бұрын
You can see my initial set up here: cindigayrughooking.com/how-to-hook-large-rug/ The only change is that I screwed a 1/4 sheet of plywood to the bottom by drilling up from the bottom into the feet of my stand. That is really all I needed. You do not need a large frame because your arm is only so long, right?
@ea.g3 жыл бұрын
@@rughooking Thank you for the reply! So you use some sort of metal podium. Interesting! Is this the only way you've seen people hook a large rug besides stretching the cloth over some stretcher bars?
@rughooking3 жыл бұрын
@@ea.g Not sure what you are asking. Most rug hooking frames have gripper strips that hold the rug tight from below. You only need a surface large enough to work on, not large enough for the entire rug.

The "backings" you can buy at a fabric store are not intended for rug hooking. You will not get your best product. Why skimp on backing, even expensive linen at $30 a yard when the wool your are buying to make the rug costs hundreds of dollars?

Thank you for sharing. I'm interested in hooking for my dollhouse rugs. What size do I need for rug warping? And where would I need to purchase?

No, burlap can rot in as little as 15 years. I’ve been Hooking for 21 years. I would be devastated if my first rugs were rotten. Linen and rug warp (cotton) lasts for generations.

My mom did a lot of locker hooking and always used latch hook canvas that you can get at any fabric store. The cotton she cut was quite thick. It made a look larger than a #8. I doubt she could have used rug warp, but if you cut it thinner, you probably can.
