I'm a Bok supporter and in 2001 I bought Zinzan's AB Jersey at a fund raiser in Johannesburg. John Eales, Francois Pienaar and Zinzan Brooke were there as hosts. His jersey is proudly displayed next to a few Springbok jerseys in my house - it is an honour to be the custodian of one of the all time great All Blacks player's jersey.

..and nobody had ever heard of the hideous Jacinda. Talking of all thing,s lockdown I watched Lions SA tests last year and it was truly awful. Not sure if it's the rules, the cult of sefetyism,or the lack of ambition on behalf of the players/management but the game has definitely regressed.

bring back the old tours! I reckon that if the rugby public of NZ and SA were asked if they would prefer the rugby championship or 3 or 4 test match tours with midweek games, the vote would be overwhelmingly in favour of the tours...I think the rugby championship is getting stale and repetitive....Who's with me?....As far as the profitability of this goes, i'm not sure how it would work out but I would be glued to both the tests and the mid week games and I think everyone else would be too.

There were 5 test matches between the ABs and Boks in 1996. The first 2 were tri-nations matches and last 3 a test series. The ABs won 4 of the 5 matches and were clearly the best team throughout. It took nearly 70 years for the ABs to win a series in SA but it was well deserved with Jeff Wilson and Zinzan Brooke playing big roles.

I watched all four matches as the last tri nations match butted up against the tour , I was 19 at the time. I was fortunate my folks had Sky and it was the days when I used to set the alarm and get up at 3am to watch the matches because recording it om VHS wasn't that great and I was worried something would go wrong LOL , Now a days I have Foxtel HD I just watch it the next day. Still the greatest forward pack I have ever watched since 1992 (when I started watching Rugby) , even better than now because Dowd , Brown and Fitzpatrick were the greatest front row in the world in 1996 and I cannot say that for the current AB front now.

I saw him in one of the few video stores still operating in NZ, in Dunedin in 2015, he was high performance coach with the Highlanders then. The kid at the counter asked him for his name and I.D because he didn't have his membership card. When he'd finished the transaction I stopped him with my hand out to shake his, I said I had watched that game in 96 at Loftus where they clinched and won the series on SA soil for the first time. He shook my hand and smiled at the memory I guess, and walked off. The best game of rugby I've ever seen, the desperation of both sides was just incredible. Great team and memorable occasion still.

I have watched this many and many a times as I never ever get sick of watching it. To me I get emotional and excited as though it's happening now and not in the past. The sweat, blood, tears, riots, racism, division, losses, victories, good, bad and great rugby heroes from 1905 up till then and now 2022 all go into this most Significant and Crucial moment in history. This team did something that no other All Black team had ever done. This was easily one of the most brutal, brilliant and fast paced games ever. The Significance of this game takes presidence over all victories and titles or world cup glories. - The ghost of not having won a series in South Africa was finally put to rest once and for all. - It marked the end of the tours and the beginning of the Professional Era. - It was the first time we went ahead in the win/loss count to make it 22 wins -21 losses -3 draws. - we got 3 consecutive wins on South African soil with this Victory

@sonnyblack6121
@sonnyblack6121 3 жыл бұрын
Yep They were pretty good alright but the front row before was Arguably even scarier Richard Loe, Fitzpatrick,Steve McDowell. Loe was the strongman intimidator, McDowall was the silent assassin and maybe the best running prop the All Blacks have ever had, and then you have Fitzpatrick who was the young bull and learnt the Dark arts off Loe and McDowell and in turn taught brown and Dowd.
@zabaleta66
@zabaleta66 3 жыл бұрын
@@sonnyblack6121 Great front row.....well both of those front rows. Yes Loe, Fitzy and McDowell would be ever so marginally ahead of this games front row due to the intimidation factor. Brown could possibly be the technically best tighthead scrummager ever but Loey, by no means a poor technical tighthead scrummager, could often best his opposite through sheer power! I recall the AB's playing him at loosehead for a few tests, his technique was terrible but his strength was evident. Knight, Ashworth and Dalton were another great front row. Knight was huge and a terribly strong scrummager though not an enforcer; Ashworth was underrated and filthy without being a noted stand over guy; Dalton was another underrated player and captain. Cowboy Shaw and Frank Oliver did the tough guy stuff back then.

Superni Ue They used to be, and when they came to NZ on tours, it was a world-stopping event and no one was confident of winning against them - it took until 1956 to win a Test series against them. Now, in the modern saturation-rugby era, the Springboks are just another team the All Blacks play year after year.

When I hear what was happening behind the scenes (huge amount of fighting between them and SA Rugby Union and Louis Luyt etc., and constant distractions from match preparations etc.) with the Springbok teams of that era, I am saddened by the fact that we never really saw them play to their potential. Would have made the Springbok/All Blacks contest alot more enticing and exciting.
