Ruger 10/22 HOME DEFENSE MAN STOPPER?!?

December 2016 - Ever thought of using a Ruger 10/22 as a man stopper, if not maybe it's time to consider this widely popular rifle as a defensive weapon in your home. Seems like 1,000 grains of lead in less than five seconds has to do more than just sting. Note - This video was spur of the moment and I was using was bulk ammo (specifically the Federal AutoMatch) and did encounter one jam. If I were going to load up for possible self-defense use with a .22LR then I would go with CCI Velocitor’s, CCI Mini Mag‘s or CCI Stinger’s for which I have never had a FTF or FTE. I would not count on the reliability of bulk .22 ammo. Also keep those mags clean. 22LR can dirty up some mags so cleaning your mags on occasion will go a long way towards contributing to the reliability of your firearm.

Just as I was getting out of the Army, in 1970, a moron in my unit accidently shot another guy in the unit with a .22 revolver. I don't know if it was a short or long rifle round, but when I visited the dude in the hospital to say goodbye, he said he was very miserable. Besides the IV, he had an NG tube, so my guess is that he had abdominal or stomach damage. To paraphrase a well-known saying, "It's not the size of the round in the gun, it's the size of the wound in the body."

My ex was an ER nurse and saw many, many people in the operating room with devastating internal damage from .22 rounds. The off duty cop that works bar security in town says the same thing. If they weren't dead when he arrived, they were begging for an ambulance to go to the hospital. The salespeople at most gun shops will try to upsell you to a gun 3x the price with ammo 5x the price by downplaying the .22's lethality. That is just the name of the game. The CCI Velocitor will absolutely wreck you.

My ex is also a nurse and told similar stories. Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way saying the a .22LR is as good or better than larger caliber rounds for stopping power, but it will certainly get the job done if it’s all you have. Additionally smaller stature people will find it far more manageable to remain on target with a .22LR when firing rapid rounds at a target.

When I was 12 years old I was accidentally shot through the torso by a .22LR that first went through a leather holster. This came from a worn out Ruger MK1 pistol. I suffered a broken rib, punctured lung, shattered diaphragm, shattered left kidney, shattered spleen, and the bullet stopped 1/8" inch from my spine. I was about 8' from the gun when it went off. I came about as close to bleeding to death as you can without dying. In my opinion a .22LR is just about all you should need for home defense or personal protection inside of 3 or 4 yards.

The 22lr is lethal. It's the perfect training and carry round. With low recoil, it can deliver the most on-target rounds in the shortest time. This elevates the 22 to super-lethal. Although stopping power is a real thing, target acquisition speed and accuracy are much more important. These are only several facts why more people lose their life to 22s.

An acquaintance of mine was shot in the shoulder with a 22 LR out of a mini revolver. He says he went down like a sack of potatoes! Your results may vary.In the house, I would grab my 10/22, before my shotgun with buckshot. Even though each pellet carries about the same energy as a .22 LR, you are responsible for ALL of those pellets that miss the bad guy. Another thing to consider. Have you ever shot a shotgun or a large caliber handgun inside a building without hearing protection? Very disorienting in an already stressful situation. It would be much easier to make accurate double taps with the .22 IMHO.If you decide to choose the 10/22 for self defense, you can improve your odds by loading with a quality round, instead of bulk pack ammo. The CCI HP Mini Mag will expand nicely and reduce the chance for over penetration.Being a premium ammunition, there is less chance for malfunction in your rifle. Just to be sure, you should run a few boxes of your selected ammo through your 10/22, using the magazines you will depend on. Good job on the video!

Tony Brucato - Good points on the shotgun, rifle or higher caliber pistol blasts. I’m sure we’ve all accidentally shot a round or two outside without ear protection (for the non-hunters) and been subject to the immediate ear ringing. CCI Mini Mag are my 22LR round of choice (and I have 1,000’s of rounds of it) but weren’t quite as inexpensive as some of the bulk ammo when purchased for everyday target shooting. Thankfully my Ruger 10/22 feeds and shoots all my 22LR CCI ammo every time I pull the trigger and I for one would not want to be on the receiving end of the shot.

When you think about it, criminals who break into houses aren’t wearing body armor, so a 22, especially 20++ rounds, can stop a bad guy, and with big mags - shot placement becomes less of an issue.

Something that nobody has discussed in the 22lr for self/home defense is the effects of shooting a large caliber handgun or a shotgun indoors without hearing protection. Even with your adrenalin pumping, rupturing your eardrums WILL affect your ability to defend yourself. A 22lr, while loud enough, is unlikely to do any damage like that to yourself, while having a cumulative (multiple hits on target) effect as a shotgun blast. Works for me.

A lot of folks in the "tactical crowd" would argue differently, and will get extremely hostile if you disagree with their "expertise". But if you search the news you find many people getting killed by a .22. I would not want to go to war with a .22, but at close home-defense distances a .22 suppository will have enough penetration to disrupt a few organs necessary for life, if ya get my meaning. That's what really counts. It's not the optimal caliber, but it is a viable caliber.

I have never had a problem with the concept that any gun is better than no gun in a gunfight. Given relatively low hit probability for most shooters on moving targets under stress, the greater capacity of the 10/22 helps mitigate that problem by allowing at least some shots on target. Better a hit or two with a .22 than a miss with a 12 gauge. With a 10/22, anyone in the house can easily be taught to quickly transition to different targets or put multiple hits on the same target. As to the math; #1 Buck is 40 grains, a CCI Velocitor is 40 grains. #1 buck out of an 18" barrel runs about 1200-1300FPS. A CCI Velocitor runs about 1400FPS from a 10/22. There tend to be 16 pellets of #1 in a 12 gauge or 9 pellets in a 20 gauge. So a 25 round mag in a 10/22 dumps out a little over 4350 ft/lbs of energy, a 12 gauge 16 pellet #1 will give you about 2200 ft/lbs, and a 20 gauge 9 pellet #1 will give you about 1250 ft/lbs. So the 10/22 is essentially pumping out the same energy as two 12 gauge or three 20 gauge defensive loads, with the same mass projectiles. For jelly fans, #1 buck averages 12"-13" penetration, and CCI Velocitor averages 12"-13" gel penetration. I wouldn't say the results are identical, but certainly comparable.

only real gun enthusiasts will know the 10/22 is a great self defense gun because of two reasons: .22 potentially badly hurts someone instead of making them black out and you are awake for all that pain so it will hurt like hell, also .22 does not exit per se and will usually bounce around organs before killing the target

Heart still beating and sometimes breathing when I arrive. Now on the other hand when I have to look for the entrance wound because it's so tiny. The victim is usually a 45 dead on scene. I have a friend with a Marlin and he swears by it. Nailed it on the head with your last sentence. Many perpetrators or home intruders are looking for an easy out. Usually the slightest bit of defensive action will send them in another direction. Also way too many people get hung up on one shot stopping power and then will tell you a 22 is just under powered and unreliable. With quality ammunition like CCI I have never had an FTE or an FTF. I will have them with the cheaper bulk ammo (which I usually shoot when planking), what will always end up running some CCI‘s through the rifle or pistol. Also I’ll be the first to tell you, if someone breaks into my home they are going to get shot way more than one time and with a 22LR I can guarantee you all of them from either myself or my daughter’s (both 130 lbs. or under) will be on target.

@@bwilson7000 - Note - This video was spur of the moment and I was using was bulk ammo (specifically Federal AutoMatch) and did encounter one jam. If I were going to load up for possible self-defense use with a .22LR then I would go with CCI Velocitor’s, CCI Mini Mag‘s or CCI Stinger’s for which I have never had a FTF or FTE. I would not count on the reliability of bulk 22LR ammo. Also keep those mags clean. 22LR can dirty up some mags so cleaning your mags on occasion will go a long way towards contributing to the reliability of your firearm. Lastly, a 22LR would never be my first choice for a self-defense firearm, but if it was the only firearm I had, then I would have confidence in its ability as a self-defense firearm. Thanks for watching and commenting.

My daughters shoot 22LR pistols and the Ruger 10/22 without hesitation. That level of comfort alone makes 22LR firearms well suited for them. ALWAYS use quality ammo for self defense and hunting purposes.

10/22’s are still “reasonably” priced compared to other guns and that I could tell 22LR ammo was the last to disappear off shelves (not counting hunting rifle ammo) and even if you can’t find it on the shelves if you know somebody else that is a Second Amendment supporter then everybody has some 22LR ammo they can let you buy off of them or just let you have.

My wife is small and couldn't handle my AR 15 or anything similarly heavy, so I have one of my Ruger 10-22's loaded with a 25 round mag right under the edge of the bed with the safety already off for any time I'm away from home. The door to that bedroom is about 8 feet from her side of the bed and there are things in our home that will make a lot of noise when a bad guy enters. Right, the .22LR is not one of my first choices but those things bouncing around in that chest would be, as someone here said, a fast plan changer.

Having a firearm that someone is comfortable shooting vs a firearm that someone is scared of shooting makes a world of difference. My daughters (both under 125lbs.) have NO interest in shooting anything larger than a 380 ACP pistol, but both are very comfortable shooting 22LR in pistol or rifle form.

@@bigaarmory100 Then as you know, for now at the size and age of your girls, that is the gun for them. Know you have started them out right. My father started me off with a single shot .22 bold action remington .22 rifle that would shoot shorts, longs, and long rifles. After my son, to who I was going to give that gun, passed away unexpectedly, I gave it to my sister for her sons to have.
