Glad yours is shooting well. I'm sure it was the temps that was giving me some bad groups. I plan on doing some more testing tomorrow. High temp of 22 below F low of 37 below.

I have the same rifle and put a $29 3x9 scope on it. I shoot it at 100 yds at a 5in target. To date, I have not fired any match ammo but everything else I could purchase. Best groups have come from slower (standard velocity) ammo, but the high velocity ammo is within a three-inch group. Really feel this rifle was a good choice.
@gunsgearoutdoorsalaska58752 жыл бұрын
That's great. Mine does a little better with standard velocity too.

I purchased the same model, but it came with an 18" barrel(heavy). Now being so cheap cost $400, I did not think it would shoot but terrible. Boy, was I wrong! A cheap box of CCI/SV cost me per box $4.65, range day came; it grouped five rounds .55" at 50 yards. I'm going to transform this rifle. First up, I installed a liter trigger spring, and next up, I mounted a Vortex PST 5-25x FFP/MOA scope cost $800. Next, I will replace the bolt handle and the knob from Anarchy Outdoors cost $120.00. If I can find a better stock, that will be next on my list of improvements. Now, for 30 years, I own Ruger's 10-22 semi-auto rifle; it's a dust collector. Wasilla, Ak.

Very interested in a cold weather ammo comparison. I have the same rifle. Very happy with it. In warm weather mine shoots everything well, favoring standard velocity for tightest groups. We don't get any where near your cold temperatures in Indiana. I remember those Fairbanks winters as a kid though!

@@JC-uq5gi That's a great question, What state do you live in? Here in Alaska a lot more moose, especially calves, are killed by wolves and bears than by hunters. In most of the state the limiting factors on moose and caribou abundance is predation, not food availability, so natural populations rarely get near the carrying capacity of the habitat. About 9% of the state is in predator control zones which allow areal shooting and other methods in an effort to increase moose and caribou availability for subsistence and sport hunters. The goal in these areas is to reduce but not eliminate the wolf population and give the prey species a chance to recover, which will happen quickly because of the high habitat quality due to the numbers of prey species being low. Regular season wolf hunting and trapping is legal across the entire state. Here we have large intact ecosystems with large predators and they play a very important roll in not allowing prey species to destroy their habitats with overfeeding. In my opinion active wolf management that allows reduction of wolf populations without eliminating them is the way to go but I have not studied it in your state. Alaska is a different animal most of the time. Do they allow wolf hunting in your state? Sorry for the long winded reply, this is my field so get kind of excited about it.
@gunsgearoutdoorsalaska58753 жыл бұрын
@@JC-uq5gi Having low population density certainly helps, but Wyoming isn't exactly crowded. I'm just guessing but it could be that a very tiny portion of our state is tied up in agriculture and grazing land compared to yours. We also import 98% of our food. It's all some really complicated stuff. I hope your moose and elk bounce back and start doing well. Getting some more bison would be cool too. They reintroduced them here and they are doing quite well.

Thanks for the .22 ammo test and rifle review. We learn something new every day. As the rifle currently shoots with the best ammo of that bunch, at what distance would you feel comfortable taking small game such as hares or ptarmigan? Is the scope you are using a rimfire or centerfire scope? Centerfire scopes are parallax adjusted for 100 tards, while rimfire scopes are adjusted for 50 yards. Just wondering if that may affect group size if you are using a centerfire scope.
@gunsgearoutdoorsalaska58753 жыл бұрын
I would feel comfortable shooting little critters with the Aguila ammo inside 30 yards, the majority of shots I take small game hunting are inside that distance anyway, that's probably why I have not noticed how bad the accuracy is in the cold until I sat down at the bench to shoot groups. That's a good point about the scope parallax, I didn't think of that. It is a centerfire scope but I don't think it would make that much of a difference. I plan on doing a lot more accuracy testing with this setup now so hopefully we will find out.
