Ruger Double Action Revolver Hammer Shim Installation

I Show How to Measure and Install Hammer Shims in a Ruger Double Action Revolver.
This includes the Ruger SP101, GP100, Redhawk, Super Redhawk and Alaskan.
Installing Shims on both sides of the Hammer will keep it Centered and Will Stop Most of the Scuffing and Scratches on the Hammer from Rubbing Against the Frame.
This will also Improve Smoothness of Hammer Operation and Pull, and will give More Reliable Ignition.
The same technique is used to measure for Trigger Shims.

Thank you Lance for the super fast shipping on my order. The .007 shims I received corrected the hammer scuffing 100%. I was able to re-polish my hammer with Fitz to a mirror finish once again with absolutely no ugly frame scuffing on it now that the shims are in place. There is also a noticeable difference in the smoothness of double and single action pull. You have a repeat customer here for sure. Next project is eliminating trigger scuffing and end shake elimination with your shims. Thanks again!

Excellent video! I sure wish I had watched this PRIOR to taking my GP100 apart. Mine came with the shims but it was a bugger getting it back together initially. I managed to get the shims to "stick" just using Hoppe's oil, but that grease looks like it'd work even better.

Thanks for this video, surprisingly my new Ruger GP100 Match Champion had the hammer shims already installed and when I took the gun apart for the first cleaning, they fell out on the mat & I didn't quite know how to get them back in place. I haven't seen anything about them in the Ruger literature so I was taken by surprise.

looks good im thinking thats where the gritty feel comes from not shimmed. Its like a piston in a car you shim it to tight the heat from firing it will make it stick.

Will the shims help with light primer strikes? My redhawk shows a fair amount of hammer rub.

When measuring the clearance for the trigger and the hammer dog, do I want to leave the same amount of clearance as the hammer (.004)?

+Thomas McCarry Hi Thomas, based on customer feedback, I think the Trigger and Hammer Dog, if polished, can be in the .002" to .003" range. Good Shooting, Lance

The Hammer Dog can be shimmed a little tighter, down to about .002" - .003" and the Trigger between .002" and .003" I think it is always best to be a little loose rather than tight. Thanks for asking!

I was wondering why this occurred, this was somewhat annoying. I called Ruger about this years ago and it seems I got no answer. This is very helpful, I will order a pair soon. By the way, are the tolerance nearly the same or would each individual firearm need to be measured? You used 2 .005 shims, for mine it could be more or less? What is the durability on these shims? With continuous use do they will they lose some of it's integrity? Last, my SRH abrasion on one side of the firearm should the hammer be totally centered? Thanks:)

Hello, Thanks for watching my video.There is a fairly large variance in tolerances in most all Ruger Revolvers, so each gun should be measured, as yours could be more or less.Our standard size 4 piece shim kit however would be an improvement in most guns, even with wider tolerances. I also sell larger assortment paks for the end user who doesn't want to pre-measure. The Ruger Factory just began installing Hammer Shims in their GP100 Competition Revolver, but as I understand they only install one thickness of shim.You will however get the most improvement if you polish and fit the shims to between .002" and .004" total clearance.With normal cleaning and oiling, the shim will last the life of the firearm, as there is no appreciable side pressure on a centering shim.Last, the hammer rubs one side due to normal off-center pressure from the connecting linkages, and while centering is not absolutely necessary, you can always shim a thou or two more on that side if you want.While these guns are not absolutely perfectly machined, they are always within design specs and are very well built. With a little time and polishing, I think my Ruger Super Red Hawk is one of the best guns out there.

1. For best fit, measure each firearm individually. 2. There is very little wear here and with proper clearance, the shims should wear indefinitely. 3. Yes, you can shim more on one side than the other to properly center the hammer, or compensate for excessive wear on one side.

If the hammer is scuffed on the sides, it is dragging the frame. It stands to reason that if it is not dragging, it will feel smoother and work better.
