I had its predecessor, the Service-Six made 10 years earlier, and it basically is the same gun except for tweeks found on the GP100. Tweeks like better grips regardless who makes them, adjustable front and rear sights. Mine was blue 4 " barrell. Built for punishment as it could take very hot loads and never bat an eye. It sold me on Ruger name. Very accurate. Felt nice in your handand the only thing i ever did to it was add some custom made walnut grips. Love Ruger! What can i say?!! I know you will love this one as well!!

Bought one a couple of weeks ago. Mine came in a more “glock “ like case not the gray plastic like most of my Ruger pistols. Wanted this revolver and gun store caught me in a moment of weakness lol. Getting ammo has been problematic

I own 2 Gp100’s 1 in 10mm match champion $900. the other in 357magnum 6” barrel. Just like this for $800. 10mm ammo is more available and cheaper than the 357mag ammo. $35 vs $45 for a box of 50 currently. I’m currently thinking of names for them both.

I’ve often thought the GP would be a great “only” 357 for a minimalist. An only handgun for that matter. Mine is in 22 LR.

I ordered mine online and received it with terrible tooling mark on the cylinder and the rear sight pin already backing out to the right about a 16th of an inch.I have returned to Ruger and hopefully they will take care of me.

My Ruger GP100 is back in my possession. This warranty repair only took 4 weeks total. I could not be happier with Ruger's customer service. All of my issues were resolved. I'm spreading the word Ruger!

Just as a note, not all GP100 models have the quick change, plunger front sight. For example, the Match Champion GP100 (which is supposed to be a competition-grade, upscale 357) does not have this feature. The old dovetail-type front sight is used instead. Why would Ruger make such a stupid and obvious, poor decison?

How is the balance and weight and balance of the 6"? Would this be good for home defense? I'm wondering if it is front heavy?

To me, it doesn't feel too front heavy, but keep in mind that the feel of a gun is very subjective. It may feel front heavy to others. As for home defense... Just be sure you are comfortable shooting a revolver in a stressful situation. I'm not suggesting that you are a novice. I don't know your level of training and experience. However, I am saying that people that don't shoot revolvers a lot find that doing a double tap with a double action revolver is actually rather difficult. But if you are comfortable with revolvers (or are willing to go to the range to practice), then the GP100 is a solid choice. It's incredibly tough and reliable with just a bare minimum of maintenance.

The Ruger has a two-point lockup system, what you are calling the bolt is not a lock up. It is a timing index.
