Thanks for posting this very informative video. One interesting thing that I found out about my Mini-14, which was the exact same setup as yours, replete with stainless steel and the composite Black stock, was that mine did not have a bushing with a pin holding it in. I had to watch the video three or four times to realize this. I thought I was missing something because when I took mine apart I had nine parts laying on the table instead of the eleven that you had. I then remembered that mine is an older model that was manufactured in 1989, which is when I bought it. That was the only difference between my older model and your newer version, other than that everything was exactly the same and I was able to disassemble it and then put it back together with ease after I finished cleaning it.

If you have an older Mini-14 don't panic when you take it completely apart and realize that you have no bushing and pin to hold it in. I have one that was manufactured in 1989 and when I took it apart I was stumped because I couldn't figure out where the bushing and the pin were. I thought I was missing something so It took me watching the video three more times before realizing that his was a newer version that contained the bushing with pin. Older models like mine do not have this feature. Other than that everything else was exactly the same and I was able to disassemble and reassemble it in no time at all after I finished cleaning it.

I would like to emphasize the point about the hammer being cocked and the safety on. I was reassembling mine with the safety off and accidentally hit the trigger and dropped the hammer. This locked up the whole gun. I called Ruger and they told me to reach through the slot and push the hammer back till it stayed cocked. Thankfully this worked.

I just broke down and cleaned my older 181 series Ruger Mini 14. I hadn't done it in years as it has been a safe queen, and had forgotten some of the steps. Your video really helped. I noticed that there are several differences between yours and mine. Relatively minor, but interesting. Getting the bolt back in was the most frustrating step. Getting it loose was easy, but putting it back sucked. Finally got it in however. Not sure how.
@Gsmooth104554 жыл бұрын
Did you remove the side plate and spring like he recommended? He said that you can put it back in with removing those parts but its much easier if you do. I had no problem whatsoever putting the bolt back in after I removed the side plate with the inner part and the spring.

The Hand Guard (HG) is held by a sheet metal clamp against the Barrel-Receiver (BR) unit. To snap off HG (2:39), i've found it's EZr to turn BR unit upside down, tilt the unit w the front sight on the table top, grab one edge of HG w a thumb, its another edge w the other thumb. Note that their thumb nails r pointing against ea. other. Now, push the HG down w both thumbs and POP! Goes the Weasel!

The trigger unit (6:44) was very hard to press down though i turned it upside down on a table as u prescribed. But, the back of the trigger guard curl couldn't latch onto the tab on the stock's metal bracket rear. Sledge Hammer may do the snap? Yes, i had the trigger unit's tab into the guide slot on the steel re-enforcement bracket (mine is of wood stock mat'l). The trigger unit seems to have some leeway to pull a bit backward but looking at the levering pin at the front of the trigger unit, any rearward shift motion must b an illusion... So, cutting the depression slot on the wood won't work either as the tab and slot determines the trigger unit position. Any one out in the audience had difficulty on this trigger unit snap on?
@schutendohkji5482 жыл бұрын
Got it. Just round off the mating edges w a jewler's file a bit did the job. Don't file off too much or it won't snap in tightly.

I get to the part where I need to “click” the trigger assembly locks and it doesn’t work. Cannot make it lock. Have the trigger cocked and the safety on as recommended. No luck. I want to push down on the trigger guard hard, but don’t want to break something. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot for the video tutorial!
@alanhigh81253 жыл бұрын
I strike the trigger guard (hard) with the heel of my hand to snap it into place. Yes, it hurts my hand at times. Others use a leather or rubber mallet . As the weapon wears in, latching the trigger guard requires less effort. Old footage from the Winchester factory, during M1 Garand manufacturing (which used the same type locking mechanism) shows the assembly workers using leather mallets.
@thomasmarengi29513 жыл бұрын
@@alanhigh8125 Hi Alan. I appreciate your reply. Man, I am afraid to hammer on the trigger guard! While it is only about 1/16” off the rear clip, it feels like something is blocking its natural motion. I am not able to see what that is, but it feels like the tongues are not lining up inside the stock. I have taken it apart previously and do not recall having this issue. Again, I have the safety on, the trigger guard all the way up when I reinsert the trigger assembly. This is making me feel like a dumb ass especially since I have taken the gun down and reassembled it successfully previously.
