Great guns with a great company backing up the name. Before Ruger did these massive 5 shot single actions you had to pay 1.5 to 3 times the price for a Freedom Arms or others. When these Super Blackhawk Bisleys came out I ordered a 480 Ruger version so I could load 400gr SWC loads. It’s a fantastic piece for sure.

I have a Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. I bought it on a whim a few years back. It is brutal to shoot with full bore .454 loads. I compromise by shooting hot 45 colt loads. You still get the "hand cannon" effect, but more in the range of a 44 mag. I think in general, 45 colt is an underrated caliber. With modern revolvers and cartridge loadings, it can exceed the power of .44 mag.
@bruceleroy8063
@bruceleroy8063 Жыл бұрын
Didn't know that about the 45 colts potential. I guarantee it's one of the top 5 most underrated cartridges as it has the most antiquated sounding name imo. Are there commercial loads that can rival 44 mag? Thanks for the knowledge.
@chaecoco2
@chaecoco2 Жыл бұрын
@@bruceleroy8063 There are loads for revolvers and rifles that can take the additional pressure. Check out Buffalo Bore. Most of their 45 colt P+ loads are in the 1100 to 1350 fps of muzzle energy, so I think that gets you close to 44 mag territory.

@rez4958
@rez4958 26 күн бұрын
@@chaecoco2 45 Colt at it's highest pressures and out of Ruger revolvers are above the 44 mag in power level. There exists a 405 grain load going about 1300fps, which is supermag territory. Most people highly underate the 45 colt because they only sell weak loads in store so someone doesnt blow up a colt single action.

The standard plough handle of their standard model can be a bit of a palm ripper after several hundred rounds of medium 45 Colt. It's a tad shorter than it should be, in my opinion. Also if I was setting up a custom built with the excellent Blackhawk platform, I'd have a smith round/blend the butt somewhat for comfort, without going too far. Stuff like the Bisley gripped BFR, or the Freedom Arms 83 have longer handles with their own take on a slightly more vertical and curved grip. It's a good design to allow some rotation and slip to manage recoil. The gun should rise and ride up, and on the return from recoil you simply snap the hammer back with the supporting thumb while locking in the target for the next round.

Thanks, Buffalo! I hunted with a guy for many years that used only a .454 Casull SA revolver for deer, elk, mule deer, black bear and hogs. When hunting on horseback in Montana he carried it in a "chest holster". He had the Freedom Arms Model 83 revolver, which was very expensive. I had always thought Ruger should include it in their line up. When they added it in the Super Blackhawk I thought they would have a winner for handgun hunters.

Ruger would never produce a SBH at the same build level as the FA83. And that's totally fine and to be expected. Something for everyone. But the FA is an amazing piece. Like handheld bank vault with the precision of a Rolex. Also, stupidly accurate. The test target they include with their revolvers has a 5-shot group, and it's usually a single cloverleaf hole at 25 yards. Probably ransom rest.
@garyK.45ACP
@garyK.45ACP Жыл бұрын
@@exothermal.sprocket Right, the Ruger is perfectly fine for any and all practical (hunting) purposes at a much lower price point. My lifelong hunting friend was (and is) not a person that was concerned about cost. That said, had the SBH been available at the time, he probably would have bought one, rather than the FA. Despite his ability to buy any firearm he wanted, before he bought the FA 83, his favorite hunting rifle for many years had been a Ruger .44 carbine. And all this even though the vast majority of our hunting was either on my family's ranch in central Texas (Runnels Co.) or in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana. Places where long shots are easily possible. 🤷‍♂

@@joeyindahl2593 My good friend killed many elk with his. All were just as dead as those I killed with a .35 Whelen. Certainly a capable cartridge. I'm not a "handgun hunter" per se, but I wouldn't blink at the thought of hunting moose or elk with a .454 if I was.

@@garyK.45ACP I've asked myself the question, would a new GP100 sent off to an experienced and competent custom gunsmith to be worked over thoroughly shoot that much less good than a new Korth Mongoose right out of the box, even if the GP100 total cost (original price plus custom work) was less than half the cost of a Mongoose? The same thing could be said about a custom Super Blackhawk worked over, or a fill in the blank common competent piece improved, compared to a factory custom/semi-custom.

Thank you for this presentation. The most powerful handgun I have shot is the .44 magnum. The first time I shot one it was a 10 inch Ruger single action. I could not hit anything with it. I don't know what bullet or load I was firing in it.That was many years ago. The next .44 magnum I fired was a S&W Model 629 with the 8 3/8 inch barrel. I could hit really well with it, no matter what loads it was fed. And it was a handful. There is no way I'll ever buy a .454 Casull in any revolver configuration that I have seen. It is way more cartridge than I am able to handle. I don't have to pull the trigger on one to know that. I have seen plenty of videos with shooters who have way more experience than I have shooting one and they ALL have shown me that the .454 Casull is way more cartridge than I care to shoot from a revolver. I am glad you reminded me of this in such an educational and entertaining manner. Great shooting, Bubba! And thanks to your friend Greg for loaning this revolver for the video.

I rock hound in some creek bottoms where I find grizzly tracks from time to time and its a comfort to have one of these along! I use handloaded 335 grain hard cast in mine. They shoot quite well out past 100 yards, but I use mine primarily for close in bear protection and black bear hunting in thick woods. Its easier than packing a 12 gauge, but that 12 gauge is often along to! :)

The beauty of the 454 Casull is that you can shoot super hot 45 Colt rounds that match or beat 44 Mag rounds but, that are really pretty comfortable to shoot compared to full bore 454 rounds.

Simply great shooting my friend. When you know your going to have to hang on tight it would be sooo easy to flinch. Great breath control too. It was cold enough you could see you exhale after each shot. Great video.

A good sign if this is new production. I was beginning to think Ruger wasn't making revolvers anymore. Most of their production revolvers have been out of stock for over two years.
