I wouldn’t say I hate Ruger or Springfield but it’s important to note issues like this with companies. If we remember it and bring it up a lot, they may be less likely to do it to us again. Springfield does have some sketchy stuff in their past and I believe last year Daniel Defense stated quite a bit of support in favor of the ATF.

But I am still a fan of these Ruger wheel guns as well. I want a SP101 3" and a Match Grade version. And I want a 7 shot GP100 with a 6" barrel. Only issue is that GP100 is not legal in California. Mine was hot garbage. Rough crown, excessive end shake, undersized throats, rough barrel, rough chambers, and a mis machined notch in the cylinder. Rather than sending it back, I opted to fix it myself to gain experience. I polished the crown, shimmed the cylinder, had the throats honed to the proper size, fire lapped the barrel, and polished the chambers. Couldn't do anything about the poorly machined notch but it doesn’t cause too many problems. It will occasionally skip time if fired in a certain sequence (putting the unfired bullet weight in just the right place) and slowly in double action, but another trigger pull gets it back in action. The trigger rubs the frame on one side and I considered shimming it, but didn’t want to complicate disassembly/reassembly. Over time, the trigger and frame have polished each other and friction is minimal. Overall, it is a solid revolver that sits really well in my hand with Diamond Pro grips, I was just disappointed in Ruger’s QC. There are various reports on Ruger’s customer service had I sent it back in, but I think they are probably as good in this department as any other large manufacturer. I’m not sure about your cylinder pulling off like it does without disassembly. Mine has a small nub on the frame that prevents this from happening, but I believe the have made a few small changes over the years so that may be one of them.

Lake County Examiner, Lakeview, Oregon: Wednesday, May 23, 2021/Letters To The Editor Best general-purpose handgun For a general-purpose handgun consider Ruger’s SP-101 .357 Magnum revolver: “stainless steel”, 5 shot swing out cylinder (double-action), with 4.2” barrel and target sights for the citizen owning only one handgun. Versatile for "self-defense/house protection/concealed carry", as a kit and trail gun for the outdoorsman/ sportsman, and for urban metro vs. wilderness rural use. At 30 oz. unloaded lightweight (for the hiker, backpacker, trapper), yet heavy enough to handle the .357 Magnum. Loaded with .38 Special 148 grain lead target wad-cutter ammo (next to a .22 or .32) practical for hunting small game: rabbit, squirrel, and grouse (for the campfire skillet), for dispatching vermin such as raccoon, skunk, possum, etc. Even for butchering livestock such as cattle with a head shot. Loaded with CCI's classic .38 Special shot or snake load of No. 9 shot highly effective in killing rattlesnakes. Readily and instantly accessible in reach via a nightstand, dresser or bureau drawer, or next to a sleeping bag inside a tent is very comforting armed security to have, especially at night! This handgun would also be great for a long-haul trucker, or hay hauler, to carry. Even for the motorist traveling on a road trip. Yes, bear in mind being broken down, stranded, and having to spend the night alone in your vehicle. This .38/.357 revolver combination along with an Atomic Beam Flashlight, survival knife, fresh drinking water, food, toilet paper, shovel, matches, wool blanket, etc. could certainly take back the night. Even for a woman it's smaller frame and size would still fit her smaller hands. And firing .38 Special ammo in this .357 Magnum could still be handled by a female. Double action revolvers can be improved with aftermarket combat rubber grips. I recommend reading, "Meet Ruger's SP-101 Revolver: The Ideal Gun For Self Defense", by Kyle Mizokan via the April 2019 issue of The National Interest. James A. Farmer Merrill, Oregon (Klamath County) On the Net: Ruger Firearms at www.ruger.com. Also, "SP-101 Like Physics, Only Practical", by Law Officer for Saturday, January 3, 2009. Very informative, educational, and yes....perhaps even historical. However, for an EDC: Everyday Carry revolver I would opt for the Ruger SP-101 "stainless" in .38 Special with 2.4" or 3.1" barrel and fixed sights. It may or may not be to heavy for a concealed carry handgun, especially inside a coat or jacket pocket, maybe?---Jim Farmer
