Rugged, Dependable, And Safe: Subaru XV Review
Subaru is a car brand well known for making rugged, outdoorsy vehicles that are ready to take on the rough and tumble of the countryside. Therefore, the car in this video should be no different. Say hello to the second generation Subaru XV, but is it rugged and tough enough to deserve the famous six star badge? Well to find out, I'm starting this review by kicking things off a little differently - I'm going off-road.
The car seen in this video is the SE, which starts from £25,325, offering features such as 17″ alloys, LED headlights, 8″ touchscreen, DAB Radio, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity, reversing camera, dual zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control and plethora of safety kit.
This car is fitted with the 1.6 litre Boxer engine, which produces 114hp and 150Nm of torque, and is mated to Subaru's symmetrical all wheel drive system via a CVT gearbox.

The thing is with this car, although its not fast, im sure it will feel more powerful than my 67 bhp Suzuki Celerio, with its 70 lbs of torque, which does just fine. I accept this is heavier, but im sure it will cope well enough for normal driving. There is a misconception in the UK that if a car is low powered, it cant be used on motorways or for overtaking. My car will sit at 70 mph with no problems, and if im already doing the speed limit on the motorway, I dont need to floor it to overtake anyone do I ? Steep gradient ? I change down a gear if necessary. Country road and a slower moving truck ? I change down a gear to overtake. No problem whatsoever. People are lazy and impatient. They expect a car to do everything in the same gear, and always in too much of a rush to get somewhere, when in reality (ive worked the maths out on this for a number of scenarios), by driving as fast as possible on any given journey, you simply dont knock any noticeable time off your journey. A few seconds or a minute or two at most, yet drivers never ever understand that. As an example, a 60 mile trip at 60 mph. Takes an hour if you can maintain a constant speed. To knock just half an hour off the same journey you would need to do 120 'mph without slowing down once, and nobody is going to do that, but if they are a total bell end and have an empty road, what are they going to do with that half hour when they get there ? If they can get their big head through the door, will probably talk crap to anyone who they think is interested. I wish drivers would learn, it would make the roads a lot safer too. As for this car, im pretty sure it can get uphill or go on a motorway without much fuss. Great review as always.

Great Video Review. I particularly like the styling of the Car. You don’t see many on the road. Subaru have also revealed the new 2020 Outback at the recent New York International Auto Show

Thanks for the review fella! you are doing a great job. I think the 2.0 SE premium is the one i'd go for, or maybe hang on to see what the eboxer XV is like. Perhaps you could review that one later this year when it's available. Cheers!

A very good assessment of the XV I own the 2.0 version and found your comments very fair Fuel consumption for mine works out 43.3 MPG I bought mine because I live up a very steep hill and in winter the snow and ice can be very dangerous but XMode gives a safe passage everytime Well done brilliant video

Subaru seem to have entirely different strategies for each country. This XV is actually really good value for the base model in Australia. Almost the same amount of A$ you pay in £. But it is baser. The similar spec model costs A$30,000 not including all the government stealing (tax).

From experience, it's not unusual for a car brand to have different marketing strategies depending on the country. Thanks for watching Snakewhisperer.

Still not convinced about the powertrain combinations, poor fuel economy, high emissions and expensive list price, but the car does seem pretty strong in some areas (particularly off-road). Trouble is that if you discount the off-road capability (which most people don't use), there are so many other talented rivals which are cheaper with better engine and gearbox options and lower running costs that you have to really need that extra toughness to want one. Makes far more sense over in America than here, I imagine.

Lloyd Vehicle Consulting Subaru buyers tend to stick with the brand regardless of the fuel economy and power etc, just because they love Subarus. I want to get one at some point in my life and the reason is because I like the fact they are different to everything else.

Hi B-M Biagio, thanks for watching. I don't think the XV would be the best car for bumpy roads as the ride is quite firm and it's not the most compliant.

Hello Eleni, thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. It's a difficult one to answer as A) I've spent limited time with the Duster and B) they aren't comparable cars as such as as the XV is a more expensive car and comes with more as standard.

You don't need to buy all that. A fiat panda 4x4 has more capability at fraction of its costs!

I suppose it depends on what you are going to be using the car for, and also how important safety is for you. The Subaru is superior on both counts (the FIAT Panda has a Euro NCAP rating of 0...) Thanks for watching.
