Preston Castle in Ione, CA is made in the same time period 1894 out of the same red stone and it still stands today, so if you wanted to see a almost as grand of a building like the lost courthouse go to Ione, CA and see Preston Castle, now I wonder if it was built by the same Architect.

That red sandstone reminds me of the mansion that used to be on the land that is now Arlington Garden in Pasadena. The mansion burned down years ago, but some of the old red sandstone blocks were incorporated into the garden. Drew & Bethany - Arlington Garden would be a good place for you to explore! It was an empty lot slated for construction of the connector freeway between the 210 & 710 that never happened. A lovely couple, Betty & Charles McKenney, got tired of looking at a vacant lot full of weeds next door and got permission to build a garden to demonstrate water-wise plants and highlight the history of the site (the garden sells marmalade made from the last [?] orange grove near Orange Grove Blvd). There are tons of hidden gems, like crepe myrtle "wish trees" donated from an art project by Yoko Ono, and a widespread use of "urbanite", aka recycled concrete, as a landscaping material. Hope you will check it out! Unfortunately, I think they require a permit for filming, so you'll have to contact the garden first.

It's close to the Criminal Court's Building on Hill and Temple Street DTLA. (Clara Foltz.) Love this, thank you.

Great stuff! There are other places with fragments of the great red sandstone LA County Courthouse which was taken down due to the 1933 LB earthquake. There are retaining walls at City Terrace Park and Ladera Park made of remnants of the Courthouse. And the Mosk Courthouse has an inset of red sandstone near the Hill St entrance. Keep this up! Thx.

That is awesome. It's a great way to reuse the old stones from the courthouse.

So interesting that such a large structure has so little remaining. Thanks for sharing this nugget.

I wonder if a lot of those sandstone blocks were taken someplace and cut up into pavestones for rich people's patios and walkways.

City Terrace Park was new to me, about 4 miles easy of DTLA (where 10 crosses 710). Not too far south of Cal State LA in East LA.

Stimson House on Figueroa in the North University Park area is another example of the same or similar style architecture. You can examine the "gate" or barrier outside right on Figueroa to get a closer look of the material as well. You can also go inside Mt. St. Mary's College and check out Doheny Mansion for another look at a beautiful historical building.

As noted, the courthouse looks quite similar to Preston Castle in Ione--well worth a visit! (I went there to check it out after seeing it on an episode of The Lowe Files 🙂)

Interesting. In Toronto there is a public park in Scarborough called "Guild Park and Garden". During the 50s and 60s it was a private estate. The owners went around rescuing stone work from sites where older buildings were being demolished (To be replaced by Bauhaus glass Boxes). There are some quite extensive plinths and Greco-style pillars scattered around the park along with some rescued sculptures. It is a popular place for wedding photography.

Good find! But please don't go to City Terrace at night. The LACSD still considers a seven square mile area across the 10 Fwy from Cal State L.A. to be very dangerous... Latino gangs. And crime is up. 😮
