DOCUMENTING THE REMAINS OF THE OLD GENERAL STORE IN GEORGIA THAT LED TO PUBLIX STORES...

I have driven by this place for years, and taken pictures of it often. I drove by it the other day and saw the further decay of the stone work. It looks like someone may have hit it. Anyway, I figured it was time to do a video documentation if it before it decays any further. Those old stores were the heart of a community, news and stories told within those walls. You can almost imagine men sitting around the stove in the fall with discussions about harvest prices.

@@celleduffel1533 My Mom was near Newport. She grew up on a farm. They sharecropped , picked cotton, chopped wood to pay for one of my aunt's to be born in the hospital. ( Hospital bill). Later when I was born and about 9, my mother took us everywhere and told us what happened at each place. She had moved to California, met my father. She then started taking us kids everywhere in California where they had lived and where the towns had been. She did that for Years and years until she died. The towns that had been there ( even in California). Many of them were gone as well. My mother routinely drove us by each place, sometimes we'd stop and get out. Plus she told me the stories of things that had happened there.

Don’t fret. There might be hope yet. We have a huge red brick general store that was right outside the paper mill & train tracks in Riegelsville NJ. Both long gone the poor store sat empty for years. But now there has been a revival of the area. New RR station, tavern/inn & tourist train along the river extended to town. Now someone is finally fixing up the General store. There’s always hope 🙏🏻

Interesting! Time passes and so do all the workings of man. History tells us about those who passed before. Thank you for sharing these times in Georgia that otherwise we wouldn't know. It's our experiences that make us richer in character. There will be a heavenly reunion one day and what a great rejoicing there will be! We lost a friend of many years, the youngest of 10 children...he was married to the same lady for 59 years, raised 3 children, and worked at the Ford Motor Company in Ohio, then Toyota till retiring, suffered with crippling arthritis like a boss...he grew up under poor circumstances but worked hard and overcame much! We made friends through yard sales,he loved to talk and shared many stories! He will be missed. Love each other and pat each other on the back, and thank Jesus for your life. Each day is precious for we don't know how many we have. 🙂💞💞💞Love from KY!

I was born in 1954, grew up in rural central Missouri. There were little stores in so many little junctions and remember going in, the clutter of everything on shelves and bins. The smells of the little stores, like wood, oil, food, grain, stuffy smells. And many times has pumps. Recall one place about 1960 or so, on old highway 66 near waynesville, Missouri An old lady ran the place, my grandparents would stop there for gas, about $ .25 cents a gallon Still many memories.

I was raised in an old country store in NC. My pop sold a little bit of everything from groceries to gasoline. He had a feed she's out back for feed for any kind of farm animal the farmers had. In the back if the store was an old commercial wood stove that my mom and another lady cooked on. They served 1 plate lunch a day and any kind of sandwich you wanted. And my 2 uncle in hickory had just a small neighborhood store and all the young guys hung out there . Great memories at both places.
