Someone asked for this and here it is - another Ruixin Pro re-pew! There are some cool things to look at with the 009 but build quality is not among them. And I could be wrong, I'm not that smart, but I think their stones are still garbage. Here you see me sharpening in single long strokes to avoid comments from shill accounts.
I try to make a video every 1-2 months. You can donate to greenbeetlegear@yahoo on PayPal to support the channel.

You can roll the dice and get these cheaper on AliExpress less than the $60 I paid on Amazon. The last time I ordered a Ruixin Pro on AliExpress it took 5 months to arrive. But if you can land one for under $20, make modifications and get better stones maybe just maybe things will work out? Also, I know any difference in sharpening angles when returning to the original side should be much smaller but all I can say is that it didn't seem to matter in this case.

Also, Also when I use the term water stone in this video I’m referring to soaking stones snd not splash and go. These stones are very porous and the grits under 1600 soak up water quickly, drying instantly using the method of wetting described in the instructions. The 6k and 10k stones here probably are essentially splash and go.

Here is an old jewers hack. Make some "stone" holders out of wood or metal and use contact cement to glue abrasive paper to them. You have an almost unlimited choice of abrasives and grits up to 30k diamond or above. This will solve all your stone complaints and you can polish to your heart's content. And did I mention, paper abrasives are cheap, even diamond.

The only issue with paper (for the purist, that is) is that it has the tendency to "roll" the edge. That said, unless you are sharpening razors for shaving your face, or machine tools for cutting steel, the paper works great for all normal working blades - knives, shears, planes and chisels.

I used my Dremel tool to grind little flat spots on the vertical bar so when I tightened the doohikie to set the angle, it would stay. I also oiled the bar that attaches to the stone so it would slide smoothly through the ball. Mine works pretty well, but the angle is not the same on each side.
@freemansame8062
@freemansame8062 22 күн бұрын
You can flatten all of the vertical bar in one side (start 1-2 inches above the thread and 2-3mm wide) with angle grinder or file and it will give the hinge bearing thumb nut area to grab allong that rod and it will prevent it from turning on the axis of the bar. if you have a small differences in the angle like 0.3 degree or so, it fixable with a light bump up so the pin that prevent the knife holder from turnning will be pushed slightly inward into the gap in one side. Regardless, I was surprised by the quality of the non-magnetic stainless steel rods they use, and the diamond stones are holding well.

I bought this sharpener knowing that if I made a few mods it would work pretty good and I wouldn't have to spend the money on a TSPROF. I knew the stones were shit. I bought stones directly from Boride and made a few mods to the sharpener. I now have about $180 invested and it's a very good system. The TSPROF is around $700.

So, I bought a version with diamond stones included, for about $39. There's only four, but they work well and don't wear at all. Not sure what wrong with your clamp, but mine holds the knife rock steady. The biggest mod challenge (and it wasn't big) was your observation about the set screws - the one that holds the gimbal arm in place (the one you adjust for different stone heights) just wouldn't stay tight by hand tightening. So...I super glued that one, lol. Its an interesting feature, but I can always check the angle of different height stones with my phone app and set accordingly, so that adjustment just wasn't that big a deal for me. I also ground a flat spot in the vertical rod about two inches long which makes that thumb set screw way more effective and gives me a sharpening angle option of 13-25 degrees, which is plenty for my purpose. It works really well now! So for $39 and about 10 minutes of mods, I have a rather functional sharpener. I may buy some higher grit diamond stones (highest that came with it was 1000), bit I'm super happy with this small investment

Couldn't agree more with the overall conclusion of this review. The only Chinese sharpener I would whole heartedly recommend is the TooHR type 3 - but even that requires some adjustment to get the best from it. My only slight criticism - both in terms of the review and a couple of the comments - is people stating that the grits are marked incorrectly, and what finish you should be getting for a given grit. It's just a matter of different countries, or brands, or industries etc. using different grit scales. The Chinese industrial scale for abrasives is just different to what you may be used to. Now, these particular stones are bad, no question there, but the grit ratings? Not bad, or wrong, just different.

Well, this review scared me until I saw the ArtTema videos. Go watch his mods. I did them for the 008 and I will now for the 009. Yes this system is under engineered compared to the big ones. ArtTema takes each problem and engineers solutions that are easy to do. If you watch his sharpening sped clips up you see the unit stays rock steady. You can't fake that. I think this system asks for a light touch but how hard is that? The mod to increase the spring tension is simple and elegant. You have to watch the videos closely to pick up all he has done but it pays off. Stones are indeed garbage, but the diamond stones you can get cheap are pretty good. Forget the stones, don't laugh at them. $70 vs. $700 if you can even get them. The TSProf stuff is terrific, but do you know it's made in the same town as all the heavy military gear being used in Ukraine, which is why you can't get these units now.
@rixjennings7711
@rixjennings7711 Жыл бұрын
sorry if this was just a bit snarky. No disrespect intended. I like your informal review style. If I could afford the TSProf Kadet I'd love it. But my little search into their operation suggested that there was likely some coziness between them and all the military production in their town. I guess you need engineering in abundance and at least the knife sharpening is a better use of it.

the cheap diamond stone sets that come with these kits or cost $30 seperately on amazon wear very, very quickly and usually don't have uniform grit. More expensive sets on gritomatic or TSPROF do well. No, they don't require water.

For hassle free quality they’re a pretty penny but TSProf and Kazak are the best. I’m still looking for a sub $100 system that’s trouble free. You can get decent stones for hand sharpening up to about 1500 grit for that money. Last time I looked, but that’s 3 years ago. Personally I like Arkansas stones.

I bought one of the cheaper ones and Amazon and a set of surprising good straight and flat stones… will say I get a very consistent repeatable edge… proper care of the stones. BUT…and this is a warning for both the cheaper ones and ones like yours. That screw that holds the spring in place will move. And call out…. And the spring holder will become a bullet if your in the process of rotating… check the screw every time or use too much thread lock…

Memory card failures=a frustrating kick in the ole wrinkle beans.... I get that most of these companies saw how the tsprof caught lightning in a bottle, but in some cases imitation is not a form of flattery and it's just basic IP infringement for profit. And imo, the execution seems so poor they would have to know they are just gonna turn a quick, short profit before their reputation is so bad that it will fizzle.

It’s hard finding a good sub $100 system! There’s some decent stones one can get to hand sharpen with to about 1500 or so. I tried out a bunch of $30 combo stones a couple years ago and found a few that did pretty good. There was a good Arkansas combo for about $50. You have to buy a few more to get up over 2000 grit. At any rate I have to think better manufacturing could prove the ruixin design for an extra $30 and there’d be s market for it.

Some of what you say is wrong here. Firstly, the cost of the stones. You might pay $300 for 5 or 6 full size stones -- 8 inch by 2.5 inch by 1 inch. You won't pay that for these little 1 by 6 inch stones. Secondly, you can get whetstones that don't need soaking. Splash and go ceramic stones just need a splash of water and they're ready to go. Watch some videos on Shapton stones. Thirdly, it shouldn't take 'hundreds of passes' if you're using good stones. I can raise a burr on my Shapton stones after about twenty passes a side. Harder, powder metal steels will take longer, but nothing routinely takes hundreds of passes. Aside from those issues, I agree with the rest of your points. Sharpener looks like junk. You get what you pay for.
@GreenBeetle
@GreenBeetle Жыл бұрын
I have priced sets of stones for these systems at well over $500. Or you can get cheap sets that fit to 1000 grit for $40-$50. I own several shapton glass stones, Arkansas stones, ceramic stones, oxides stones, chosera, idahone, boride, diamond and have tried many inexpensive combo water stones. I know the difference between soaking, oil, splash and go because I own and use all of these types of stones. I sharpen knives I forge from 15 thou thickness to sharp and repair damaged blades regularly. I sharpen supersteels, I narrow angles. These things take many, many passes. It is often a hundred to 200 passes total.

I would really love a knife sharpener like this for my collection but all the options out there are well above my price range. A lot of these devices are way over engineered and too expensive so I've been keeping an eye on your sharpened reviews. Even this, a simple and cheap to manufacture is still imo overpriced and not well made to boot. Perhaps I should be so stingy on a good sharpener but paying hundreds is just too much. Awesome video as always. I'll keep to hand sharpening for now but look forward to your next sharpener video!

As thr saying goes...you get what you pay for. Everyone had known for years that the Chinese stones on these type of systems are complete garbage...no surprises there. The whole point in getting a fixed angle system, is to have a fixed angle...this isn't. Just based on reviewers comments that points were loosening multiple times in same session speaks volumes. Thr blade pivot system was poorly thought out as well and is an accident screaming to happen. If your on a strict budget and don't sharpen many knives, the lansky system is a much better option...you can buy a base system for roughly the price of this crap. But if you have or sharpen many knives, bite the bullet and buy the best system you can afford and grow with it. For someone just getting started I would recommend one of the systems from hapstone, they are modular so you will never outgrow it. Another economical option is the work sharp precision adjust. Yes it's primarily a plastic build, but will likely outlast that cheap Chinese alloy. Best of luck on your sharpening journey.

I was going both directions as the instructions indicated but water stones are usually 2 directional or at least I’m not aware of one that isn’t.

I think the softer stones - in particular that 1500 - would last longer used purely in downstrokes, but as GB stated, that shouldn't be necessary, and the instructions didn't specify, so..... That said, I bought the Lansky recurve sharpening stones, and the two higher grit stones are just as soft as that 1500.

Камни конечно говёные, но точилка в целом не так уж и плоха, для домашних ножей вполне! Значит просто заточник не смог в заточку)

By pushing the stone aginst the blade are you not cutting the stone with the knife insted of sharpening the edge with the stone? I believe thats why your loosing so much material?

It does explain to me a lot- I was sort of wondering why the very expensive versions of these made in place like Poland and Russia were made out of the things they are with what I was considering 'over engineered' components. Turns out they're not over-engineered, they're in the 'good as it needs to be' bracket of continuous use for such a tool and probably worth the money they cost... to someone, who isn't me. So it does actually answer a question I had in terms of "why it cost so much" because the alternative is that costing less means you get a bit of junk. Now take that box out of the garbage and make a knife out of the components or you'll trigger all them zoomie kids that accuse boomers like yourself of being wasteful and gretas will troll you on the internet.

I have one of these and it came with "diamond " stones and sand type stones. I was able to get very good results and bring back a terribly ruined kitchen knife, however I had to use very light pressure and keep the stone wetted. I can tell the stones arent great but the rest of it works just fine as long as you dont ham fist it and you oil the slider ( i used seed oil only because I use it around food). I can see how this product would fail with some kinds of users, personally I had no problem with it and my kitchen knives are all very very sharp and symmetrical now. I am surprised you didn't put a helicoil in it, break out a tig welder or 3d print a part for it. As for the cam mechanism stressing you out, there is nothing in the manual that says you have to push the lever all the way over. I got the feeling watching your video that you were trying to break it, and I found it entertaining, thank you for showing me what is going to break on this thing.

Wow. So, to summarise, these things look good, like they will be brilliant, but in reality are annoyingly shitty pieces of crap. Nice to know, thank you!
