So, I'm Samoan. My dad did NOT want to go see Moana (he felt like it might just be pandering to Pacific Islanders), but I dragged him there anyway. The first song that plays as the Disney castle appears on screen is sung in Samoan. Tell me why this man started crying because he never thought he'd hear our language being sung in a Disney movie? 😂 Glad you enjoyed the movie! I'm subscribing for sure.

I love how this movie teaches us that "HURT PEOPLE ,HURT PEOPLE". I love how this movie tackles different traumas. From the overbearing dad because he suffered the lost of his bestfriend which was due to his recklessness, Maui who was rejected by his people and overcompensates and becomes a people's pleaser because he wants to be accepted by the wrong people, moana who wants to chase her dream but ultimately when faces the dream, it didn't work in the time. Mother nature was mad because her heart was stolen. Her dad was hurt, so in the process of trying to be protective of Moana, he hurt moana. Maui who lost his gift which he thinks is the only thing that is special about him, the only thing that makes the people somewhat love him, he hurt moana. When moana failed to fulfill the prophecy the first time, in the process, she pushed Maui too much which eventually led to losing his gift. PEOPLE WHO IS HURT TENDS TO HURT PEOPLE in trying to protect themselves and most times, them hurting others is a cry for help. I know it doesn't justify the bad things but it takes patience and time and effort to heal trauma. It's not a one step process and definitely doesn't take a day to heal it. Also, YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. Just found your channel by chance and omg your reactions and insights are so enjoyable. Happy Holidays! much love!

Not *all* of them. A good number were primarily written by the other songwriter, Opetaia Foa'i, and a few aren't original songs. The song at the start where baby Moana finds the stone is an older song. It was written by Foa'i in the early 2000s in memory of 19 young girls who lost their life in a fire at a secondary school in Tuvalu. The lyrics were rewritten for Moana, but I feel like the sad undertone remains and I always cry a little. I think it's a little sad that Miranda seems to get all the credit for the Moana soundtrack when he was one of two songwriters and one of three composers. Because Miranda is more famous, the Samoan songwriter who did such an amazing job gets no credit.

Rukiya there are some behind the scenes facts about the film; first off it was originally going to be hand drawn animation but changed it to cgi instead due how to animate ocean waves in pencil is difficult. Moana was going to have older brothers but changed it to only child, and Tomatoa was going to be a headless giant however it’s difficult to communicate with a headless giant so they changed to coconut crab instead because in Pacific island cultures coconut crabs viewed as signs of superstition. Well anyway if are interested in folk tales that Disney films are based on look no further than Jon Solo’s Messed Up series and prepare yourself for a shock of your life for the folk tales disturbing original depictions made by storytellers of old.

I love, love, love Polynesian singers. Archaeologists discovered that there was a period of centuries during which the Polynesians basically stopped sailing as much. No one knows why. That was the inspiration for this movie, which is a fable for why that happened. Moana is voiced and sung by an inexperienced young actress. Why does the mentor usually die? Read about the Monomyth or "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell.

I think I just noticed something else about the movie. All of the past chiefs placed a stone on the mountain, to represent the safety of the people by staying on the island(like in the song lyrics "you can find happiness right where you are). When it's Moana's turn, instead she puts a sea shell on top, to represent her now guiding her people across the sea like they used to.

I was upset as well that Pua wasn’t the sidekick because in all the trailers it was always the pig! But then it was Hei Hei in the movie and I’m like sigh..alright. But Hei Hei did their thing lol
@My-mind_me. Жыл бұрын
So the thing with the pig and the rooster was that the directors knew that Pua was a source of comfort. And since Moana is on a large journey, having Hei Hei in a way taught Moana endurance on her journey. Or something like that. I don't quite remember

Moana is a beautiful movie and you have a great singing voice!! 🌊🐚💗 Loved that you called out the Rock’s character and the giant crab as Leo’s too funny. I would say my faves are definitely Moana, Brave, Frozen and Luca so far. Hope Disney keeps doing animation! Phenomenal songs they’re all bops.

20:34 that is not what actually happened Firstly, when they say "demigod" in context to Polynesian/pasifika beliefs, it's not so much as "child of a god" but more "supernaturally-gifted person, godly or otherwise" (being a mistranslation/misinterpretation of the term "kūpua" in Hawaiʻi) In the Maori version of Māuiʻs origin, he was born to a mortal woman, Taranga, who already had 3-4 sons. But Māui was born prematurely so, fearing he wouldnʻt live long, Taranga cut off her topknot (her "tikitiki") and wrapped the infant Māui in it and sorrowfully cast him to the sea. The gods found him and nursed him, raised him, and trained and taught him the secrets of the gods. When he was still a young man, he was sent back to his family where his adventures really began and was given his proper name of Māui-tikitiki-a-taranga (Māui in the topknot of Taranga) In Hawaiʻi though, Maui wasnʻt even abandoned. He was believed to have been born to another woman, Hina, who got pregnant when she found and wore a red malo (loincloth) on the beach that belonged to the chief Kalana (derivative of "Taranga", there's a bunch of cultural similarities/overlap in a lot of places) and much like Taranga, Hina already had a few sons of her own (all named Maui as well) and named this last child Maui-a-kalana (Maui of Kalana) in some versions, he was born from an egg since he was associated with roosters. In either version, he was raised alongside his brothers and had many adventures involving his family a lot: - his snaring and slowing of the Sun was so his mother had more daylight to finish working on and drying her kapa (barkcloth) - he involved his brothers in paddling their canoe while he was fishing out the islands from the sea - when discovering the secret of making fire from the stingy mudhens, he had his brothers prop up a body decoy in their canoe to make the birds think Maui and his brothers were out at sea and wouldnʻt interfere when he was actually waiting to ambush them and learn their secret - a Hawaiʻi legend says his mother was trapped in her cave home by the moʻo (giant lizard) Kunaloa, to which he had to rescue her from - another version of the Sun-snaring story says he had a sister who sacrificed her long hair to make a rope/net strong enough for him to trap the Sun in So yeah, Disney kinda messed up his origins/family a bit

10:42 @Rukiya Reacts if you want a real explanation, then it's because when Walt Disney was starting to be successful, he bought his parents a house in California. His parents died in the house, he put the death of parents or a parent/caretaker as a tribute to them. After Walt's death, the creative team continued that trend as a tribute
