Rukka Trek-R jacket review

The Rukka Trek-R is a proper adventure jacket, by which we mean that it’s a jacket from which the membrane can be removed. And this is, for us, the defining quality of an adventure jacket. And that’s because if you’re riding somewhere really hot, or if you’re working up a sweat off the beaten track, the last thing you want anywhere near your body is a waterproof membrane. A membrane will make it harder for the body to sweat. Sweating is the body’s natural way of cooling itself down. As our sweat turns from a liquid to a gas it draws heat out of the body. And a membrane makes it much harder for that change of status to take place. A membrane will also serve to insulate the heat that is generated by the body. Lastly, a membrane will prevent the oncoming air from cooling the body down. All of which explains why the Trek-R is a proper adventure jacket.
The jacket has a 500 denier outer shell, with additional 1500 denier layers on the shoulders and elbows. You get Level 2 ‘Air XTR’ D3O protectors in the shoulders and elbows. There’s a Level 1 protector in the back. A chest protector can also be fitted.
As you would expect, a jacket like this is well vented. You get vents on the chest, at the waist, in the shoulders, down the sleeves, up the flanks, and across the back.
Pockets are in plentiful supply too. There’s a large map pocket on the back, a time card pocket on the sleeve, two chest pockets, two lower pockets with flaps, and two water-resistant pockets in the detachable liner.
The jacket has a lot of adjustment. There are velcro flaps on the hem, and at the ends of the sleeves. Importantly, and we think it’s a must on a mid-length jacket, there’s a belt arrangement at the waist. The sleeve volume can also be adjusted.
The most important element of the Trek-R is the waterproof inner jacket. It’s made from a Gore-Tex 3-layer membrane, but the interesting thing about it is that, with its stretch component, it can be worn inside the jacket, or on the outside. And this is important because, if worn on the outside of the outer shell, you create a jacket that as waterproof than a laminated one. An outfit that will never wet out.
You also get soft neoprene in the collar, and stretch panels inside the elbows, under the arms, and on the back.

I just acquired this jacket as a warranty replacement (more later). In the US it’s called the Madagascar-R. I’ve only worn it on 2 or 3 ride outs and so far so great. It connects to my Rukka R.O.R. Pants which are a GTX laminate. However I do plan to get the matching pants as I’m done with laminated gear. I live in the SE US and it’s just too hot for most of the year to justify the cost of a laminated suit. Re:warranty replacement. This jacket replaced a Rukka R.O.R. jacket. In the US, we get a 5 year warranty. At 4.5 years old, my jacket lost a snap and that is the only justification they required in my case to replace the jacket at no cost. The R.O.R. jacket was $699 when I bought it. Do the math, 4.5 years later and for the original $699, I had the original jacket and now the Madagascar-R. Can’t complain about that.

I fully appreciate all the advantages of a suit with this type of construction but I'm a rain magnet and do a fair amount of my riding in Wales. Even in summer it soon gets old having to keep stopping every time it starts/stops raining.

"Best warranty in the industry". As a dealer, you should know that Stadler offers 10 years warranty...

As ever Chris a great review and finally a top quality ‘adventure’ suit from Rukka; I’m still getting value from my laminate proshell Rukka since 2016, though it’s rubbish in those rare British summer days when it’s hot(!) so have gone for the Raymore(?!) suit with a Scott waterproof for piece of mind. Should this new suit now replace all of that in one single package?…

Too expensive for 99% of us mere mortals. 😮

I have seen this exact comment posted before, either by you or somebody else. But it simply doesn’t stack up. If biking is your passion, then I don’t see the price of this suit being beyond the reach of 99% of mere mortals. Take out finance over three years, and you will pay less than £75 a month for those three years. After that you will own a suit that may well last another 10 years, and of course the waterproof is guaranteed for life. Now £75 a month is what somebody would spend if they smoked just three cigarettes a day. A lot of people I come across, who are certainly mere mortals, smoke many more cigarettes than this a day, so you can have a jacket like this for far less than a pack of cigarettes a week. So, I simply don’t agree that an outfit like this is out of reach for 99% of mere mortals. CP

If you can't afford the suit, you can't afford to finance it. Great moto gear reviews, poor financial advice@@Motolegends

Is the Trek R the same as the Madagascar? I’m in the U.S. and it seems to be the same? Thanks
