I have a question, if there's anyone still knocking around here -- in the case of the bearing change despite a collision course, wouldn't it be enough to keep recording bearings to the bow and stern of the long vessel (or the bow of the towing and the stern of the towed vessel)? Then one ought to be fine if both bearings go up or both bearings go down significantly, but in danger if they change in different directions or if one bearing stays constant.

Well assume the risk of collision exist.... even if there is slightest of doubt in prevailing conditions... in any case you are a give way vessel considering you have sufficient sea room, advisable to take early action.. if not enough sea room advisable to slow down...
