RULE 'EM ALL! Create OneLake shortcuts to ANY data source!

OneLake shortcuts! They are super cool, right? But, shortcuts are supported only for other #MicrosoftFabric items, such as lakehouses, plus ADLS Gen2, Amazon S3, and Dataverse...We can't create shortcuts to on-prem data sources, such as SQL Server, right? RIGHT?!
Well, yes and no! In this video, I explain how to create "shadow shortcuts" to any data source that is part of the #powerbi semantic model. And, when I say any, I mean literally any - not only SQL Server tables or Excel files, but also something as wild as DAX calculated tables!

Hi! Do we always need to publish the semantic model whenever there a (data) change? Is it possible to automatically reflect any (data) changes on the semantic model in the shortcut?

Hi, it depends if you use Import/Direct Query/Direct Lake storage mode for semantic model. For Import mode, you must refresh semantic model to have the latest data from the data source. For Direct Query, it's not necessary, because queries will be generated at the query time and will always retrieve the latest data from the data source. For Direct Lake, you can enable "refresh" (data reframing) under settings "Keep your Direct Lake data up to date". great video! One question: how can we use powerBI desktop to work with Direct Lake? Currently it is not allowed, but are there any workarounds to it? Lets say I have an existing report based on ADLS Gen2. If I do the shortcut to One Lake and use SQL endpoint to replicate it and publish it with Import mode, can it be switched to use direct lake instead? Or do I have to re-create measures, data model, visuals etc in powerBI service from scratch in order to use Direct lake connection? Thanks

Hi. As far as I know, Direct Lake is not working (yet) with Power BI Desktop. Hm, I'm not sure that the workaround you mentioned could work, because I believe you can't switch from import to Direct Lake. Cheers!
