That was one of the great things about Rory - he wasn't so impressed by the Doctor that he couldn't see the real (and often flawed) person underneath. He was also more than willing to call him on it, especially if his choices put Amy at risk. I think this gave him a greater chance of keeping the Doctor stable than some of his other companions.

I can remember Nyssa crying out for Adric (the first time I saw that episode, long ago), like it was yesterday, and it still hits me like a punch in the gut. There have been 42 companions on television alone. Of those, only five have died, a few arrived by accident, and with a few he objected at first to them coming. In The Wheel In Space when Zoe Herriot wanted to travel with him, the Doctor told her about the Daleks. The Doctor Lies did NOT mean that everything he says is a lie. It means he doesn't always tell you everything. TO KEEP YOU SAFE. Has he ever told his companions they'll always be safe? If he says he'll protect you it's a promise.

Kind of that unfortunate consequence of him being who he is and living the life he does- there's inherent danger the more involved you get. At the same time, he suffers alone, he needs that companionship, partially for his psychological stability/emotional health and as a safeguard against becoming the villain. Puts him in an awful damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-dont situation.

What I find interesting is the 11th Doctor is described as a character who constantly lies partly out of necessity to not corrupt Amy Rory and River's timelines but more out of habit since he says he lies so much he no longer remembers if he's lying or not. Compare that to Fox's Lucifer Morningstar a character inspite of being named the prince of lies is always completely honest even though very few genuinely believe him. I wonder if we'll one day get a similar version of the Doctor who always tells it straight and refuses to tell even a tiny little white lie.

It really captures the intensity, despair, loneliness, and depression that the Doctor and some companions feel. Especially when he says "they were always brave." This really hit home for me, watching all the companions and then the Doctor suffer. And the quote, "the doctor lies"- it's perfect. He lies to protect, but also deceive. All in all, this is the best video I've ever seen for DW.

Great video, very moving and dynamic and shows how manipulative the Doctor can be. But I'm personally starting to get sick of that quote. "The Doctor Lies" Everyone's taken it to mean the Doctor lies frequently and nothing he says can be trusted, when it was just one line that was supposed to indicate how manipulative the Doctor can be, not a statement that he can't be truthful. But you give fans an inch they take it a mile.

this is very beautifully done! I like the fact that you included footage that isn't often used in other fan edit videos, and you made sure not to show favouritism to any specific companion or Doctor. I find too many videos/people who tend to avoid certain companions/ Doctors and always include certain ones even though the video is meant to be about all of them. It's always a real shame, especially when it's done very well. The exclusion automatically looses respect (especially when I see more videos by the same person, and they still clearly exclude the same people)

I totally agree that he's a hero. Most of the time when someone like Davros is saying he's a terrible person, it's because they're trying to convince the DOCTOR of that. Because they know that he is his own biggest weakness, and that if he doubts himself, he can be defeated.

I tried to get my mom into doctor who. Because she isn't into sci-fi, I told her some of the lore, you know, with the time war and all and that he's the last of his kind, traveling with companions because he's so lonely. I wanted to show her that it's not just a silly science fiction show but very deep and tragic. I achieved the opposete, instead wanting to watch it, she said: "I don't know why you keep doing this to yourself. There's so much sadness in the world already and all you do is watch even more depressing tv shows!" I tried to reason that Doctor Who can be very funny too and inspirational, but couldn't get her to change her opinion. My sister and me forced her to watch an episode with us (The Girl in the Fireplace) and she asked the question of earlier. This is the only episode she's seen till now. But I'm glad she at least had an emotion. I will get her there. Someday.
