Tom Baker had two Dalek stories in 7 years and that was one of the most popular & iconic eras of the show. The Daleks are a foundational part of the show, but if they turn up too much they become wallpaper. Each Dalek & Cybermen story should feel big and anticipated, not "here they are again". Not to mention the series desperately needs new recurring villans.

As iconic as they are - and as much as I like seeing them - they need to be rested for a good few years now. If the Pantheon of the Gods thing is going to play out properly, the Daleks shouldn’t be anywhere near it. Unless they rock up in the very last episode of that story arc and exterminate the Toymaker…

Gasp! How dare you … invert that analogy 😅 But yes. These monsters are so effective for their inhumanity, and as a kid I loved how hard they were to negotiate with. Douglas Adams had a line in his books along the lines of “it was evil, but not evil as a maniac that kills you, more the evil as a motorway barrier that kills you”. The Borg used that brick-wall aspect to the hilt, quite effectively in their most famous / favoured episodes. And then the Borg Queen was either inevitable or unwelcome or both. 😞

I've always thought 1 of the reasons they were used so much in modern who is because they don't look like a man in a rubber costume. They are sooo not human. Also, from a production perspective, they are cheap to use. You don't have to wait hours for an actor in make-up (having rubber glued on, or their skin painted). They were already redesigned in 2005 (so no additional cost for design or props). They work well as CGI as well as live action (not all aliens do). With split screen you can easily make an army of daleks.

An episode from the perspective of a Dalek? I like it. Perhaps it could be one of the very first ever made (after 14 gave Davros tips on their creation), a test Dalek, still learning its casing and what it even means to BE a Dalek still kinda having actual moral thoughts while Davros slowly “works out the kinks” until we get the Daleks we know and love/hate. Throw in a plot about raging war on the time lords or something to fuel motivation and you’ve got a solid starting point

Tbh the best Who story idea I’ve heard from fans, probably ever. They could even drag it out over a season with little sections popping up in different episodes with progress, and then do a whole inside from their perspective episode. Kind of like BSG did when they did that episode from Ellen‘s perspective after her death.
@1FatLittleMonkey10 күн бұрын
Especially early on, if they weren't the "bad guys" in such an unambiguous way. The perpetual war on Skaro in Genesis Of The Daleks needed to end. They had moral superiority as the means to an end. They didn't need the obsessive xenophobia that we see afterwards, although it was present. Our POV proto-Dalek can be a more rounded being, with a conscience, and the story shows there was a chance to turn the Daleks into something more, but the events of the story (including the actions of the Doctor) make them freely choose to _become_ the xenophobic purists that we know & love.

There's a part of me wishes that the story "Dalek" had been the last time that we saw them, because in that story, RTD subverted so much of what we expected of the Doctor and of the Dalek that it would have been a perfect ending for them. The wish doesn't last long - but still.
@ericgjovaag795811 күн бұрын
Let's not forget, without the Daleks, "Doctor Who" would NEVER have become the phenomenon it is now. Dalekmania in the '60s kept the show going longer than it had any right to, bridged the transition from William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton, and to many in the UK are equally as important to the show as the Doctor. That said, they need to be used sparingly, and they need to be shown as clever and cunning in a really good, cracking story with higher stakes than usual. Maybe not every year, but they should always feel like they're just around the corner and ready to unleash some new plan on the universe. I will throw in one possible story seed: Whatever became of the Thals?

Ellie, I’m upset that you’ve lumped in the 13th Doctor Dalek stories in some kind of trend line! The first season of Jodie Whitaker was so removed from the existing vibe and had NO existing monsters, that the Dalek return really WAS welcome - but it’s more true because of the way they returned. They were SCARY again with the way they became unkillable and went into the zombie genre. In fact all three Chibnall stories made me love him for some really good Dalek writing - the final one, “Elf Storage”, was SOOO CREEPY and I haven’t felt that since I was 10 or 12 years old. Well done for that. These were fresh, angry incarnations compared to the ones in a “parliament” or having a crisis of goodness or the ones building a 1930s skyscraper with pigs and using their casing as a sauna to bake a frankencake with human ingredients.

I did still feature a little bit of their perspective so my idea wasn’t entirely wasted. Sadly didn’t win the competition but I’ve posted the short story on AO3 with the title Day Of The Amewrit. I think it was true. Not just how often they appeared, but also the type of stories. They were getting sillier and more desperate. There are now 4 different in-canon ways they merge with humans (Evolution of the Daleks, Oswin in Asylum of the Daleks, everyone else in Asylum of the Daleks/Tasha Lem, the archaeologist from the first special in the Whittaker era). But this is quite a different character trait than the ones in the big Dalek stories who are all about force and domination. That's before we even get to Into The Dalek, which felt a lot more like "what else can we do with a Dalek?" than "here's a story we really need to tell", especially since it's so close to and so similar to Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS. Feels like they had the latter plot first and then rehashed it. I am glad they're not still popping up every season. I agree they should come back, but not quite yet. 2025 Christmas special at the earliest, but better 2026. After (or perhaps the finale of) season 3 seems the time to me.

Now they show up and are beaten just like any other enemy. Like, why are these guys one of the most feared races in the universe if they can just get blown up with any old plasma rifle or buzz of the Doctor's sonic? I want RTD to tap back into what made them the ultimate Doctor Who villain back in 2005 and make the the terrifying murder bots they are! But what I want is like maybe Daleks questioning their values is more widespread than is believed, based upon evidence, (it seems quite easy to "turn" a Dalek), so maybe enough of them did so that they made their own fleet etc; The Good Daleks or something like that lol, and they would be warring with the Daleks ongoing, in the background

The thing that makes me believe this theory most is how the dalek appeared in The Waters of Mars, by far their most shoehorned appearance.
@tzarg12 күн бұрын
Is it really tho? also (7:07) it couldn't have just been any alien, because Daleks are the time-travelling ones, so only they could know
@dannygoyisthebest12 күн бұрын
@ well, that and if you read the Writer’s Tale by Russell T Davies where he kept a diary whilst making the specials he basically confirmed the theory, saying that as waters of mars was in 2009 and end of time part 2 was technically 2010 he’d need to add daleks to that story too. So the original draft had daleks in it until Steven Moffat told him he was planning on using daleks in series 5 so Russell T Davies wrote the daleks out of the story.
@0llieWells11 күн бұрын
@tzargThe issue there, though, is this is specifically a Dalek from ‘The Stolen Earth’/ ‘Journey’s End’, a Dalek who believed all universes were about to be blown up by the Reality Bomb. It seeing Adelaide and thinking “nah, this one’s important for the future” is somewhat self-defeating since it thinks everything is about to end. I always read it more as the Dalek getting a recall command and heading back to the ship and Adelaide reading more into the “gesture” than was there, but it did always feel shoehorned in for the “deal” (whether it’s real or not) regardless

During the Hartnell and Troughton eras you had 40-45 episodes at 25 minutes per episode. In per season of William Hartnell had 4 Dalek stories across 3 seasons when there were 40-45 25-minute episodes per season. Hartnell had 4 serials (7, 6, 6, and 12 episodes… 13 if you count the Doctorless episode) and Troughton had 2 serials (6 and 7 episodes). Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davison had seasons of about 26 episodes at 25 minutes per. Pertwee had 3 full serials (4, 6, and 4 episodes) plus the final episode of one serial, Baker had 2 serials (6 and 4 episodes), and Davison had one serial (experimentally done as 2 45-minute episodes due to the Olympics). Colin Baker had 2 45-minute episodes (1 serial) in 2 seasons, and Sylvester McCoy had 4 episodes at 25 minutes each in a single serial in 3 seasons. Each Doctor needs to face the Daleks once, IMHO. Go for a second or third serial depending on tenure. You don’t need to go more frequently than every other season.

I would tend to doubt the Terry Nation estate hypothosis (and this is the first time I've heard it). I don't think it's needed. The amount of nostalgia-based decisions in modern versions of legacy media doesn't require it. The daleks were bait for those of use who loved Dr. Who in the 70's 80's and 90's and they were over-used. I can see why they were given an extended vacation and hope they feel much refreshed.

I'd argue the Manhattan two parter was where they first started going downhill. Yeah, it was a two parter, but after two seasons of the Daleks being the big threat the show pulls out for a season's big finish, suddenly they were just plopped randomly into the middle of the season like any other monster for the Doctor to defeat and go on his way.

SPOILER'S AHEAD!!! .. i'm not one for saying bad things about a show, but since the "Disney-facation" of Doctor Who, yes, the episode quality has gone up, we've had some good episodes, some not so good episodes, but one thing that i don't like is that they seem to of "try-harded" the show .. basically, it seems like they went from the titanic film "A Night To Remember" to the film "Titanic" over-night, then you have all the Disney clothed characters in the Time Hotel (back ground in the main reception), the over-the-top storylines of Sutekh being latched onto the Tardis for God knows how long, it just seems like they tried plucking idea's from the sky and said "yep, that sounds good, let's do it", i mean, what happened to storylines like Bad-Wolf or River Song or even the Face of Boe, the good writing seems to of faded away since Disney bought DW and they seem to be making the show more for profit rather than enjoyment now, i miss the days of mystery, like trying to work out who the astronaut was at the lake or who the Silence were, you know, something that got your brain thinking, i mean, sure we have Mrs. Flood, ( i recon she's either Jenny, the clerk at the hotel the Doctor got trapped in, the real Susan, she's a Time Lady who escaped Gallifry after it re-appeared and before it got destroyed by Chibnall OR she's another incarnation of the Master), but it doesn't feel the same, it doesn't feel .. like they tried and thought it through if you see where i'm coming from (EDIT): as for the Daleks, well, they were cemented, whether it's a "once-a-season" view or a two-parter, they ARE cemented as one of the "Core Villians" of DW, in my view, there are three: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, i would love to see them back, as they are the ones the Doctor hates most, yes, it is annoying that they always use the "emergency temporal shift" as an escape, but let's be honest, if they didn't, the Doctor would destroy the Daleks and we would probs see them very rarely, if not at all, they are a fundamental part of the show and need to appear once, maybe twice a season (EDIT EDIT): 13:39 - Great idea, love the premise of that as a two-parter, i recon you could have the episode start when the text saying "A long time ago on a battle field", then show Capaldi saving Davros as a child, with a bit more dialog, then it skips forward with the words "(random number) years later" and it shows Tom Baker and Davros working on the Dalek creation together, the Doctor having a conflict of what their doing, but doing it anyway, then have the show going inside of a dalek as it's "switched on" so to speak, and in a big room with plans on walls, a control chair, desks and other things, we see a Kaled, stood in the room full of rage and anger and wanting destruction, we see it invade planets, survive war after war, then it goes to the Time-war and sees the carnage and mayhem of what they have done, after the Doctor writes "no more" in "gun-language" on the wall, the Kaled sees this and realises there is more to the universe than destruction, then it goes on a journey of self discovery, noticing the fear and trauma the Daleks have interred on the universe and has a change of heart, it decides "no more", we see it kill a few command daleks, then it meets with the Doctor and realises that the man they hate most in the universe was talking sense the whole time of knowing the daleks, of course this would only be part one, not sure on part two yet

The Daleks have passed the point of diminishing returns. Way way back with NIne, they really did feel like the massive, terrifying enemy that's supposed to make your blood run cold with fear. But then they started showing up regularly, and getting beaten regularly, to the point that they don't really seem like much of a threat anymore. I mean, they were about to erase all of reality and they got beaten. Where do you go from there? Back to "we're going to use duplicates of Bri'ish officials to take over the UK?" And they get beaten with a wink and a grin like they're nothing to even worry about. I've always criticized franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars because it seems that no matter what is happening, the writers can't help but make every single possible bad thing happen to the protags - seriously, folks can't even cross the street without getting shot at, kidnapped, and blown up (and let's not even talk about poor Chief O'Brien) - but writers do that to add tension and make it harder for the heroes to come out on top, so that it feels like they actually overcame something. With the Daleks, not so much. They just get beaten SO EASILY. The Daleks need to stay away for a long while. At least two doctors' worth of time away. Give them time for their repeated (and all too easy) defeats to fade from recent memory, so that when they DO return, they feel big and terrifying again.

As a LONG time DrWho fan, I’ve enjoyed the couple years off from the Daleks. I love them and the show NEEDS to keep them. The Doctor fighting the Daleks will always be icon DrWho. That being said, I don’t think we need to (and I’d rather not) see them in Season 2. While the point of getting a returning villain that millennials and Gen Zs will recognised is a good point, I think a better way of getting that group of people who haven’t stuck around would be to pull an iconic Villain from the first RTD era. For better of the worse, I would say the 3 most icon original villain’s from the OG RTD era are 1. The Weeping Angels 2. The Slitheen 3. The Ood Of those three, I think the best Villain to bring back would be the Slitheen. After Series 1, we never saw them again (on the main show). But the fact they returned more then once of SJA, have been referenced several times in the main show since Series 1 and ALWAYS appeared in the old DrWho mag one way or another every issue, goes to show they stuck with people. I would assume it was because the design of The Slitheen is a very basic ‘pop-culture-alien’ with big black eyes and green skin. Obviously Aliens of London and WW3 aren’t the best episodes, and Boom Town is often forgotten as it’s a dialogue ran episode. But with AoL & WW3 being as politically charged as they were, now seems like the perfect time for some RTD style on the nose, political cometary with ignorant, aliens trying to take over the world for there own self serving agenda. If not the Slitheen, then bringing back one of the most icon monsters in DrWho ever would be the right call. The Weeping Angels. Obviously, the more they showed up in the Moffat era, the less intimidating they became. But with Moffat now back as a writer and not a runner, it could be the best way to get a stripped down, horror focused Angels episode like Blink. To bring in the audience they’re wanting to regain, the marketing for it would have to follow suit. Make it obvious this is a scary, hide behind the sofa, controversial for Saturday dinner time episode. It’s what everyone wants from the Angels and would double down even more on the mistical/cosmic-horror the show seems to want to go in with themes of, for lack of a term, magic being brought into the show. So yah, went on a tangent, but I don’t think DrWho needs to bring the Daleks back to get the OG RTD viewers back (necessarily), but bringing back the biggest and best from that era

How would it be, finally having a Dalek as companion? Now we had serveral Daleks changing (Lonely Dalek, Dalek Sac, Dalek Caan, Oswins Dalek, Rusty...), we had them so many times as villian. There must be one now succeeding, seeking for forgiveness and redemption the Doctor for forgivness and trying to creat other good Daleks to give redemtion to them. And we finally need again a real alien companion! I guess, we all agree having always the kinda same type of companion is getting little boring too.
