I would assume the over the top security around former president is not just for their own safety, but because of the vast amounts of high clearance information they know. Imagine the top secret information you could get from a former president if one was abducted

I met Pres Jimmy Carter in 1983, after he was president, on a flight. He and his detail, sat in coach, and Carter shook the hand of every passenger. He is a humble man.

7:06 I grew up not too far from the Richard Nixon Presidential Library. I rode my bike past it a lot when it was being built because it was on the way to my favorite hobby shop.

I think the protection is also extended to the widows of the POTUS as well. I would think that Carter reduced his detail eons ago. He still lives in Plains. He conducted Sunday school and I just cannot see all that disruption in such a tiny town. I also know POTUS cannot eat food ordered out for fear of illness or poisoning. Not having a minute to myself in the bathroom--gawd. I would NOT handle that much intrusion in private life. It always looked like their lives shrunk during and after leaving office. Hence, the 'bubble' concept.

I remember that. The athletes were confused about the food, given how they normally eat. Was there some kind of budget crisis at that time? Normally the WH chefs would prepare a meal for the visitors.

Kind of an aside, but my family friend's father was the top security detail for JFK in the secret service. He was with him when he was assassinated. (Bill Barry) He tried to warn John to go another route because the team couldn't protect him in a crowded area, but he was trying to be social and honestly...most likely drunk. He retired soon after and never could forgive himself because he felt responsible for his death.

Imagine having a romantic night with the wife with an agent right outside the bedroom door. Agents even go into the restroom with the president and ex presidents. I was in the same building with Obama, Bush and Clinton and the bathroom was shutdown while the president was in there. Presidents cannot eat food from restaurants unless the secret service orders the food while undercover.

The degree of protection of a US President is enormous. The UK prime minister enjoys certain protections, but is not allowed to do all he/she wants. Of course leaders of countries such as No Korea and Russia have protection no others have. Although russia's protections related to Putin are done because of the kind of person he is.

The equivalent of a President in a monarchy is the King/Queen, not the Prime Minister. Presidents/Kings/Queens are Heads of State.

The POTUS is a bit unique in that he(she) is head of state, like a monarch, but is also head of government, like a PM. The US system combines the two roles into one office.
