I am not an A&P. I work on tube & fabric airplanes, mainly restoration and repair. Welding and fabric work mostly. Stuff that most A&Ps never touch. I have a friend who is an A&P/IA who checks and signs off all my work, just as per the regulation 43.3. I can't tell you how man A&Ps give me grief for this! Funny thing is, they are mostly unable to do the kind of serious rebuilding work I do and they never even touched a piece of fabric or opened a can of dope and have no idea about welding. Thanks for giving me something I can point at and tell them : watch this.

Some A&Ps are VERY ignorant about most of aviation maintenance. Even some IAs are very ignorant. One IA that I ran across could not even time a magneto to an engine, but he had the A&P and IA, amazing. Good work man!!! I had a student Pilot who recovered the Wings on his Taylorcraft. I was actually shocked and was looking at his Wings in amazement before we went flying. I had not said anything while looking and he asked: "Did I make mistakes or is it not a good job", the question surprised me. I said: "I am very surprised, this is absolutely the best job of fabric recovering that I have ever seen, much better than I can do or others here in Alaska that do so for a living. This is an absolutely amazingly good work that you have done." You do NOT have to have an A&P Certificate to be able to do good work. Congratulations on your work.

What I learned from owning an airplane. Complicated compliance to fly safely.

This was very educational and will benefit me as an A&P and pilot/aircraft owner. One thing that could have improved it is noting more differences for E-AB aircraft.

Savvy Aviation How is “commercial operations “ defined for owner maintenance privileges 47:45? Is there an exception for training?

I'm an A&P and my instructors said to keep the log book on the plane is it will burn with the plane. You don't want anyone looking too close.

What if an IA signs off an aircraft as unairworthy due to some item being out of limits. The owner then takes it to an authorized person for repair and this person finds the item to be within limits. Can the authorized person then just sign it off as within limits and return it to service? I have actually had experience with something like this and ended up replacing a part even though it was still within limits, just as a CYA.

TBO on a part 91 aircraft? Yes. Except parachutes on Cirri and the similar items. Any A&P can sign off the testing and inspection. EX: your engine is 200 hrs past TBO. The IA declares it unairworthy because of time past TBO. Go to an A&P, have him test and inspect the engine for airworthiness. Voila, discrepancy resolved.
