This Rumah Gadang Minangkabau is located in BukitTinggi, Indonesia. It was constructed on 8 Aug 1988 and it is now converted into a Library. Gadang in Minangkabau meant (Besar), Big.
The host in attendance, Ibu Itah gives an extensive briefing to visitors on culture, history, functions and different types of Rumah Gadang as well as the values hold by the occupants of Rumah Gadang.
Rumah Gadang was constructed in traditional ways without the use of a single nail or screw. It used more of wooden joints that were intricately crafted that allow the Rumah Gadang to sway when there is an earthquake. There were two actual earthquake incidents in the years 2007 and 2009 where other surrounding buildings that used normal construction method collapsed but not Rumah Gadang. The most it had slanted slightly with the wooden joints tightened and strengthen.
It is such a miracle that this traditional construction method could indeed last till to-date! However, with the advent of modern living coupled with the influence of external values, Rumah Gadang has become historical traditions. But the architectural design of the roofs have been adopted in many buildings in Padang and BukitTinggi or other areas where Minangkabau's traditions are prevalence.
Visitors of Rumah Gadang are given the opportunity to dress up in traditional Minangkabau wedding attire for a fee. If the visting couple wish, they could use the service of photographers for them to re-enact their wedding ceremony for photo shoots in the Rumah Gadang's wedding dais and in its beautiful surrounding compounds.
